Well for us Americans, this is the day!! Tell here how you got your copy of the Mix-Up and your initial (now legal) thoughts.
I am going to get mine at Best Buy today after work. I wanted to go before but they open at 10 and that's when I have to be at work. Damn the man!
Even if there is poor reviews, I don't care. There is just something so exciting about going and buying a new album by my favorite band ever. Eeee!!
Even though I know people will have mixed reviews, let's try and keep this a positive thread (y). Post your stuff about disliking it, sure, just don't be a jerkface.

this album is very good.
I love it because it's laid back, not trying to be anything fancy, no fronts or bullshit, just smooth and honest.
for real, I want to go buy a can of tomato paste and make my own red sauce from scratch now after listening to this for the first time.
I bought it on iTunes, as I'm hoping and praying that I get tickets for the Boston show (hopefully the rumored Gala event show they spoke of)

They're saving one copy of The Mix-Up for me at my local indie record store and then some friends & I are gonna drive along the lake for the first listen. my ride has a sick system and it's a gorgeous day & we don't have work today!
(no, not hard core enough to take the day off for this, it's just one of those things that worked out oh so nicely)

I checked with Best Buy a few days ago, they assured me it would be $9.99. I picked my copy up this morning (this store only got 22 copies) and it ended up being $11.99 (n)
I love the disc art. The orange peel "S" in the Beastie Boys Logo is perhaps the coolest of all the letters, so to see the disc look similar is neat.
No CD booklet either...the whole package is quite spartan.
Still, my favorite band just released a new album today, I'm pleased. Plus not listening to the leak or seeing any shots of the packaging prior kept the whole thing fresh.

I love it. I also like the studio chatter between tracks. Makes it seem very live/raw. Great album in my opinion. I notice they say "Off the Grid" twice in B For My Name... what does that mean?

I noticed if you hold the back of the cd case up to a mirror it says Beastie Boys....just like the front.
The Mix Up and some Gala Events will hold me over until the next Beastie Hip Hop entree is served.

It's without a doubt the Beasties most chill album. It has all diifferent types of influences from ragaee, funk, jazz, to digital distortion. I bought it after work today at FYE and plan on inviting the crew over tonight for beers, bonfire, quoits, and the Mix Up!

Normally "off the grid" means that you live with no running water, electricity, internet etc. I figure it's Adam Y. unplugging or using his acoustic upright.

Eeee! Well I just got back from driving up the canyon while listening to it. Sounds awesome! I really like the second half of the album more than the first for some reason. Off the Grid is still my favorite song probably followed by The Melee. Good shit all around!

It's a good album, and its nice to have a new album by our favourite band, but, yeah, im still kinda disappointed.
Why? Because most of this album sounds the same. I know its an instrumental album, but that doesn't mean they couldn't have thrown in more sounds to the mix, like samples, scratching, horns? Alot of this just sounds the same to me. Good, but the same throughout and kinda forgettable.
Still, it'll get more than a few playings this summer, probably whilst bbqing (if this apocalyptic rain stops >:( ) And some songs will definitely find their way into many a mix tape for years to come. But will I constantly listen to this record in years and years to come like I do their others? Maybe, but as of right now, I doubt it. It might grow on me more, as I listen to it over the next few weeks though.
I'm not down or anything though, as long as they return to the studio within the next decade. And as I said, its always nice to have new beastie's product of anykind.
Ultimately, I think i just wish their were rhymes on it.
Left work and picked it up at Best Buy. Now back at work enjoying some great relaxing sounds coming from my computer speakers.

I got my cd this Saturday. I wasn’t sure about when it would drop out, so I was just checking my local crappy record store to see if they had it. They didn't at first, but then I asked for it, and then hurray, I got it.
I really like this record. Its chill out if I want to read, and it's funky to dance to if I'm in a dancing mood :)
I thought the songs would remind at lot each other, but I was nicely surprised, when they weren't.
And they inside cover art is cracking me up.
One thing that's disappointing is that there's nooo info about this record, anywhere. They are coming over here in a week, and still I haven't seen anything about this album.

I have to agree. I was disappointed when ttfb didn't have any instrumentals. When I heard the next album was ALL instrumentals, I was excited...thinking back to Futtermans Rule, POW, Song for Junior, Namasté (an instrumental with commentary which gives me goose bumps every time I listen to it), among others. But after listening to the album 3 times today, there's 2-3 tunes I can say I do like, but the others don't jump out at me as having a great beat or being different and impressive, or hitting on your emotions.
I hope they do at least one more album before retirement.

I picked this up before work today. Very psyched to have my copy as I walked into Best Buy to get it wearing my TT5B t-shirt I bought at the show that Awesome I FUC$King shot that was filmed. I have the luck of having two tix to the central park show and look foward to rocking out with my fav group.

Yeah, tell me about it. I went to Circuit City for the $9.99 price, and found it nowhere in the new releases. I didn't see the Bad Brains in with the new releases either. Also, weird that it was separated from all the other B-boys albums. This one was in the rock section, the others were still in the rap section.

i imagine when they say "off the grid" they're referring to the protools grid. most bands record to what is called a click track, and in protools there's a grid function that serves as a visual reference to the tempo, time signature, click track. falling off the grid can mean losing the click/original tempo from the beginning of the song eventually which is also very common. it can even mean that they didn't even use the grid to begin with.
especially with a song like "off the grid" that has a dramatic change of pace in the middle, it would be frighteningly easy to fall of the grid on a change like that.
also, considering that the "off the grid" reference on the album cover is presented in a boggle cube/grid, that could have something to do with it also.

Just the CD and basic cardboard case.
Really?! Mine came with a free bonus 7-inch vinyl!! It's Electric Worm as the A side and Suco de Tangerina as the B side! Did no one else get this? Don't mean to rub it in, but march on back to your big chain stores saying you got robbed...
For those who feel like reading & sharing, here's my notes on CD release day:
- We rocked out to this album for several hours in the car today riding around Chicago & the highways in on & off thunderstorms. Whenever the sky cleared we treated the town to The Mix-Up blaring out of my ride with the windows rolled down. It was funky, we were feeling it (literally, we could feel the bass lines up our butts). If this isn't the Beastie Boys doing their thing I don't know what is. I can't imagine hating on this album.
- Money Mark is doing some amazing things with the melodies, and I think he's responsible for the hooks & catchiness of a lot of the tunes. I love the way the songs build and how everything is layered. It's a great jazz record in my humble opinion -- orchestrations, themes, variations.
- Off the Grid remains a favorite with 14th St Break a close second, even though the FX made me worry I was getting pulled over. Y'know?
- Love the art. Love two views of the machine, with the rat in the back controlling things via joystick. Love the monkey taking a break on the back cover!!
- Yes, towards the end of the ride, having listened like five times, we segued really gracefully into Funky Boss and onwards. Nothing wrong with that.
What else did you all do with this album today? Cheesey sharing time?

Yeah I got the CD. I went to an indie record store and they don't carry any major label CD's (just vinyl and indie CD's... maybe a couple major CD's by classic bands), then I went to A & B Sound (an electronics store I guess) and they didn't have it "yet", then I went to Futureshop (think Best Buy) and they had it. It was in with the new releases. Nobody had the new Bad Brains at all. The first store was sold out of the vinyl and said they wouldn't have the CD until next week.

I dipped out on a work conference early to go buy it. Headed to Best Buy to get it and it was at that point I realized how excited I was. Listened to the first two songs on the way home and I honestly almost cried from happiness when I heard the first few familiar-yet-new riffs coming out of the speakers. I guess I still have those 14-year-old tendencies that come out from time to time. :o
Anyways, I'm listening to it for the third time tonight. I LOVE it! :)(y)

I rode my bike and got it because I thought it would be more enjoyable if I worked for it or somethin. I don't know. :p I listened to it and all I gotta say is I'm in love with this album! How could anyone not like it?! My dad who makes fun of me for liking them so much and didn't believe they could put out a good album raised his eyebrow and gave this "hmph" smirk, nodded and said "this is pretty fuckin good". Hell yeah dude! Even my mom (who doesn't get my obsession) and 4 year old brother whose only favorite song is Intergalactic liked it! My dog hasn't heard it yet though. BUT all that matters is that I like it anyway and I'm gonna listen to it over and over because lalalalala eargasms! Ok bye now.

Instantly started dancing arm gestures thought the album; sure I have a favorite but it seems every song is very memorable, even if they feature the same basic core sounds.
Actually bought it at Best Buy at the last second before closing; with the 10% off coupon, I pretty much got it for 2 bucks. ^_^

this is the first time I have really debated buying a hard copy of a beastie boys Cd... I have always bought them on the drop date, but with the Itunes sale you get the extra song as well as the code for pre-sales when they announce more shows,,, this is a real dilemma, as I am trying to but tickets this thursday for the Greek in LA...

It was cheap enough $10 US, that I just had to share. Listening now with the headphones on just like everyone here I'm sure, so I don't miss anything. :)

I think it speaks volumes that this came out in UK on Monday and not much really been said thus far.
Also - I'm amazed at how cheap you guys buy cd's for in the states - people bemonaning paying $12?!?!
In HMV, Virgin, Tower similar here in UK £12 ie about $25 is reasonable for a new cd.
As for the album itself - it's OK. But hey, who had high expectations after such a low key release? It's a space filler until next album proper.

Horror Story:
I go to Super Target. I look for The Mix-Up. I look in the "recently released" section. A bunch of bands I've never heard of, and no Beasties. I go to the Beastie Boys section. No Mix-Up album. Oh wait, there it is!
1 copy stocked, hidden behind 3 copies of "Licensed to Ill".

Best Buys does Price Matching -- If it's not out of the way, find a circular for Targer or Circuit City and bring it in with your receipt.
Store Price Guarantee
Two more great reasons to buy with confidence at Best Buy.
If you are about to make a purchase and discover a lower advertised price offered by a local retail competitor on the same available brand and model, let us know and we'll match that price on the spot.
Already bought? We'll refund you the price difference, plus an additional 10% of that difference up to 30 days after your purchase (14 days on select categories*, 60 days on HDTVs purchased from 6/3/07 through 6/30/07).
Either way, simply bring in proof of price while that lower price is in effect.

I picked this one up at a Best Buy after work yesterday too... funny eh?
Anywho's, I love it personally.
I think the best way to discribe it is like this:
Think if the Shaw Brothers (makers of every cool kung-fu movie) had made a Buddy Cop movie in San Francisco around Haight - Asbury in '73. Now imagine the movie has a shit ton of montages.
Now imagine what music would go with this movie, and you have now imagined listening to The Mix Up.

I had to have sex with the record store owner to get my copy cuz I only had like 8 bucks on me and wanted to hit Taco Bell.. Anyway, I got my copy! Yay! I went jogging and listened to it .. The sunshine and the trees and me and the girl parking at the 7-11 I always run by... We were all in perfect harmony!
The monkey is out to lunch! Do know what I mean? See the little bastard on the front of the cover? He's out to lunch on the reverse side. That's a total jab at DJ Hurricane? What? Shut up... Oh! I love this record! It's mellow and rockin at the same time.
We had a little listening party as soon as we got it back to the house my MIL has rented for the week and which has speakers in every room/area hooked up to the sound system. I ran around and turned up the speakers by the pool, on the balcony, etc. I asked the youngest musician in the family (age 10) what he thought of the new Beastie Boys and he said "I like it! I didn't realize it was the Beastie Boys." We have another copy waiting at home so we'll probably give him the one we bought on Tues.
I love the album art too. When I saw the books in the logo I actually teared up :o
