I'm considering fixing my eyes permanently. Have you, or has anyone you know, gone through LASIK or some other form of permanent, eye correction surgery? If so, what do you (or they) think of it?

Thanks :).

I have had Lasik. It is awesome. I really recommend having it done, it was on the pricey side but sooooo worth it. I could see immediately and the recovery was relatively quick and painless. I have had bad vision since i was a kid. And I mean BAD, like 20/400 or something. I could barely make out the large E at the top of the chart. I had astygmatism too.

They'll try to sell you a procedure that will correct "high order aberrations". I did this part but I don't know how necessary it was. It about doubles the price so be wary of that.

The procedure was very wierd. I am not a squeamish person usually so I expected to be okay and by the end I really wasn't. Its not painful at all, its just mentally taxing to know that someone is cutting open your eyeball and shooting it with a laser. You are awake and looking the whole time.

A friend of mine in Sacramento went to Canada many years ago and had it done, and he was fucking NUTS about it. I moved away about 18 months later, so I don't really know the long-term effects, but the surgery was probably right behind the list of Jesus, his wife, and kids of best things in his life.

I have a consultation in a couple of weeks. I signed up for a free LASIK promotion, so they want to put me in their system and the free consultation is mandatory, so if I dont win (which I wont) they will continue to hound me...

but we will see how it goes

Yeah, that's the only part about it I didn't like, the whole industry seems to be a little used car salesman-y. Which is wierd when you're talking about surgery. Surgery on your eyes of all things.

If it comes with a cheap or free magazine subscription, make sure you uncheck the "renew my subscription automatically" box. (y)

My wife and my sister in law had it done. They love it. But.....I'm not too sure how well it really works and how permanent it is. I can still see things that she can't see. And a local 'radio personality' had it done and he admitted that his sight isn't as good as it used to be when he first got it.

But they all can go and get it done again anytime they need it for free....for life. Its been about 4 years now and her sight is still tons better than it was before she got it done.

I'm too paranoid about someone messing with my eyes, so if I ever needed it, I don't think I would do it.

Thank you. That's great feedback :).

Approximately how much did it run you monetarily? How did you find a doctor? When did you get it done?

...that might be the mushrooms, though.

I appreciate why you'd be concerned. What about any other surgery one might have to get? It's all risky if you ask me, but you aren't. I'm asking you :).

...tree surgeon work?

Even that. I knew someone who died doing that. He was a good friend to my buddy and an even better guitar player. R.I.P.

It cost me about $2800 but can run as much as $4200 from what I've seen. I found my doctor by asking around at work. Some people around here had it done. I ended up going to the Lasik Plus vision centers which I believe are nationwide here in the States (not sure where you are). I had it done about three months ago and my vision is still 20/15. That's not to say that with more time it won't regress, but hey, pretty much anything is better than what I had before.

If you have a flexible spending account plan with your job try to use that.

Any time. I like to talk about Lasik. I learned a lot about the process when I was going through it and if I can share my pearls of wisdom it makes it that much more worth it.

It is all risky....but I was saying I'd rather wear glasses. Just like I'd rather go to physical therapy for rotator cuff tendonitis instead of surgery. If there is a non surgical route...I'd take that first.

I have a floater/multiple floaters in both eyes. They're annoying. Would lasik get rid of them?

I used to work for a major LASIK company. I had the procedure done but I'm wearing glasses now. The is a chance of regression. Thank God is was done for free.

LASIK is a treatment on the cornea so it wouldn't do anything for your floaters which are most likely related to your retina.

I'm glad you brought this up because my birthday is coming up and my dad asked if I would consider Lasik for it (jesus now that I know how expensive it is hahhhh, I'd rather take a damn trip for that much dough). But yeah I like my glasses and I'm used to them...I'll probably get it in 10 years or so when it's been more perfected and is probably cheaper.

I had it done about 6 years ago. My vision was pretty bad from the age of 7 -- I was like you, 20/400 and 20/600 with astigmatisms.

My vision was AMAZING the first few months after the procedure. I could hear better and my basketball game improved! Over time, my vision is still better than before but not as sharp as those first few months. I probably could use glasses at night, now.

I researched LASIK doctors in my area and found one who was rated as the top -- he was one of the first to perform the procedure when it was first introduced in the US. I paid more than the cheapest amount, but it was so worth it! For the first time, I can wake up and tell the time on my clock.

And they've been performing LASIK for years in Europe and Canada, so there is plenty of evidence of the long term effects.

I've thought about it too, but haven't really researched it. Mr.peachy doesn't want me to do it, for the same reason he doesn't like it when I wear contact lenses - he likes me looking like "the sexy librarian".
