Whilst I don't disagree that what is shown in that video is highly suspect, I don't think it is logical to conclude somehow that all American cops therefore "suck". The nature of the job of law enforcement unfortunately attracts a percentage of real dickheads, but that is the same the world over.

Yeah. Plus, I'm sure it's only American cops who suck, all other law enforcement officers in the world are honest individuals who never have situations like this.

This cop is back on the street after this incident 3 months ago,he'll be civily sued but the "reprimand" is a joke....power,a gun and a badge can corrupt anywhere,anytime.....note the "suspect" IS handcuffed....(n)

Looks like everybody's out of hand. The kids were riding where they weren't supposed to be, which kicked everything off.
Unless you're protesting something in some intelligent way, when a police officer gives you an order that's not illegal, you obey it and deal with things afterward. Otherwise you're just giving them fodder for shit that might actually be legitimate.

SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME!

There are properties where it is a crime, whatever people may wish otherwise.
In one city I travel through every business day, biking on the sidewalk is a crime. I don't think it's an inherently dangerous thing, but that's the law, so I know that if I choose to run my bike up a sidewalk, I can get busted, regardless of my personal feelings about it.

I should probably say "misdemeanor" or whatever. I'm not sure of the terminology. But it looks like what happened was that a ticketable offense escalated into something else because of whatever else was going on.

^ thankyou....in this city cyclists are held accountable to the same traffic laws that motorists are,so,if you jump a red light to get ahead of traffic(in order to be seen better, etc) you can be walloped with massive fines and the points go against your drivers liscense if you have one,so you can actually lose your motor vehicle permit from riding your bike....this is hell on couriers....(n)

Yeah; I wouldn't even bother. That'd be like running pizza delivery on three wheels.

That could be fun.
Do those thermal bags keep pizza that warm on a snowmobile, though? Guess so, but... huh.

I can understand why Martijn thinks all american cops suck. You see, here in Holland you can murder a child and go to jail for 6 months, while in america you go to jail for 3 years when you serve beer at a 16 year olds party.
Both are ridiculous and I also think dutch cops suck. They pick on young kids or innocent people and are afraid of the real criminals.

....in America, anyway, punishment is handled by a legal system, not the cops. Cops enforce laws (hopefully) and can cite or detain or whatever, but any sentence that actually comes down has something to do with their testimony, perhaps, but it's more about judge and jury and interpretation of laws already in effect.
So, basically -- it's not a cop's fault that sentencing is sometimes disproportionate.

There's no way of knowing what they did prior to the video camera starting to record so those kids aint so innocent. Meanwhile it's pretty much common knowledge that when cop tells you to do something you should probably comply.....These kids nee some training

My dad used to be a cop, and yeah, I think he beat the shit out of people pretty regularly. But they were all crackheads and drunks. They beat the shit out of him too, so it was pretty fair. He's got lots of crazy cop stories.
He occasionally runs into people he knows from his cop job... drug dealers, prostitutes, etc. and they all say hey and act nice to each other and talk for a bit and go about their ways. Once when it happened I asked him who the guy was, and he said a guy that sells crack down on (some corner I don't remember) that he arrested several times. I asked how they could talk to each other all friendly like that, and my dad said "well he was just doing his job and I was just doing mine." Oh, that dad. He's a wacky one.

No problem....serving the public is one of my many hobbies
the cop is definitely overreacting ("that's resisting arrest, that's disorderly conduct, that's violating a city ordinance, and here's a bunch of other minor things i can probably accuse you of doing wrong, now lie down before i mace you") but on the other hand the kids seem to be kind of annoying too. i mean, there's the ordinance against skating (and biking) on the sidewalks (presumably it's ok on the street? i'm not sure) because it's a heavy pedestrian zone, and the kids do it, probably knowingly. then they get caught and it's all "what?! come on, what did i do, i was just riding a skateboard! i was riding a piece of wood, what's wrong with that?! fucking pigs!"
i can't sympathize with the cop at all, that guy's a dick, but i can't sympathize with the kids either, fuck them. there are times for defiance, to be sure (for example "excuse me nigger, step away from the lunch counter, that there's for white people only"), but there are also laws that make sense. i hate it when people (generally aged 14-18) act like it's a huge injustice to get busted for breaking those ones.

My favorite cop story while in the Land of Smiles is I was blind drunk in a taxi looking for opium~That's apparently hard to find and he tried to sell me crank. Coffee makes me jittery` crank would have me climbing the walls. I said No Go: He then said he'd buy me a $25 sack and afterward it was about two joints. I was rabid pissed. And jumped out of the cab. He stopped and made a ruckus lo and behold there's the police: I was about 25 yards from the taxi driver and he told the cop his version of the story. The cop then approached me and asked for my take: I told him frankly that I asked the cop to buy me some pot and he brought back too little. That's why I jumped ship. Cop walked back then walked to me and said I had to pay the fair. I told the cop if I was going to pay $25 then I should at least get the pot. He goes back to the taxi. The back to me~He didn't mention the pot. I then asked him for a ride home. The cop drove me home on the back of his motorcycle

i LOVE it when clients start talking smack about asshole cops arresting them for having a tiny piece of crack. after all, there are MURDERERS out there. yes, yes there are. killing each other over their territory for crack sales. but the best part is that they tell the judge they don't think they should have to go to jail because they have 5 kids and it isn't like they killed anyone.
so, to me, it seems that lawbreakers feel you should only go to jail if you're a rapist, child molester, or murderer, and all other crimes are just ticketable offenses.
i used to think cops were assholes, until i saw what kind of shit they have to put up with from clients. out of the hundreds i've met, 5 have been true assholes. the rest are actually really decent, and they're just trying to do their shitty, low paying job as best they can.

That doesn't look real, especially when they look at the camera and the guy at the end says "happy skateboarding day." I guess it's hard for me to believe that kids are that stupid.
Don't run away from a cop when he's talking to you. And don't taunt him by saying he's making too big a deal out of a city ordinance. For some kinds of officers, that's the only law they get to enforce. It's not like this guy would be working a homicide but for seeing these kids skateboarding. Enforcing little city ordinances is likely his whole job. It's like telling the meter reader that his job is a joke.
