IF IT HAD VOCALS!!!!!!.....i will never understand why there is no vocals..vocals would have made this album a masterpiece like check your head or ill communication......instead it is just a jam record....would songs liek gratitude or live at pjs or sure shot be as great without vocals..of course not....this record needed vocals!

get over it, man. the whining about no vocals has been going on for months. you should've been on the bandwagon then. right now, it's fucking old.

For me lyrics would elevate it from low background music while I'm doing other things, to something I could bump in the car....

Earlier, I had it jamming in 5 channel stereo on my surround sound and it was fucking off the chain. You really need to listen to this on a finely tuned system or headphones to get the full dose of Beastieodix out of it, and when I say finely tuned, I don't mean a system that has so much bass that you don't hear any mids or highs. It all needs to be balanced to get what I'm talking about out of this album.

I hate this line of thought. People said the same thing about TT5B when it came out. "You have to listen to it on blah blah blah surround sound." Man, I want an album to be dope when I play it on ANY speaker, whether it be my car, my stereo, or some shitty discman from 1992.
Really, that argument makes it sound like people are making excuses for a shitty record.

The Mix is f'n awesome!!
If they want to add something to the songs live then so be it, but they gave us a great album and I'm happy for it!

I enjoy this record on any system. I was just stating one of my own experiences. But we all know that good music sounds so much better on a good system, but I'm sure I don't need to tell you that, or do I?
You must be listening to a record from another band if you think it is shitty or just have horrible taste in music. I admit it isn't their best work, but it is for from shitty.

I bumped it in the car. Actually, I was thinking it's pretty good driving music - I mean mostly on the highway. It's good for that. Going 65 and stuff.

The Mix Up is grown folks music. A lot of kids think Miles Davis is shitty (not that Mix Up is on par with Miles Davis, but you get the point.) I'm also not saying that youngin's can't get into instrumental music, its just that kids are less likely to have the patience to appreciate it.

Seconded! I actually need to hear music in my car very loud to "really" hear it- its my way of listening with headphones. So far TMU totally passes my car test- its a rock solid listen on the streets.(y)(y)(y)(y)(y)

I agree it's getting old, but he's right!
Since all of this loving or hating of TMU is a matter of opinion, I figure that all of you who aren't into it or don't get it, should just stick it up on your shelf of forgotten cd's, chalk it up to a lost $15 and stick your LTI back in the player...
whining, complaining and even basic discussion of WHY there should be vocals isn't going to change it... there are NO vocals on this album!

Vocals or no vocals.. This album is on Booker T's jockstrap. No, not that, but you got that? (Check out the Hip Hug-Her album....)
This album is perfect on my mono duck radio hanging in my shower. I'm doing lathered up loop-de-loops at approximately 65 miles per hour... Just totally jamming without goggles...
If you're not enjoying the album it might not be your system.. check your head.

This is hilarious, since I'm not a fan of The Mix Up I should "stick Licensed To Ill in the player." What's that supposed to mean, that either a) Licensed To Ill is a stupid record that only appeals to the lowest common denominator? Or b) that I'm young and naive and could never "understand" the complexities of an album such as The Mix Up.
Fuck off with that shit, man. I've been a huge Beastie Boys fan since I was 7 years old, (I'm 22 now) I own every single album and EP, and for you to throw that stupid LTI comment out there makes me realize how much of an elitist snob you are. What your basically saying is that I cant grasp the genious of a record like Pauls Boutique or Check Your Head because I'm not a fan of an instrumental album that really isn't all that great. I should just stick to "beer and party" tracks, right?

I'll never understand why some of you can't accept the fact that the new album doesn't have vocals.

Umm, no.
I chose LTI out of my ass. Who is being the dickhead now by labeling "beer and party" tracks to LTI instead of a classic rap album. Who is being the "snob" by saying LTI is less of an album than CYH or PB.
Go on with your 22-year-old self and stick CYH into your cd player then, MAN.

Trust me, I think LTI is just as good as Pauls Boutique and CYH. If you cant see why I would take what you said the way I did, then I dont know, we're not on the same level.
But either way, I'm not about getting into message board arguments, so if I came off as a dick I apologize. I was asking for it, and I know it.
Just to clarify for people, I dont dislike The Mix Up because it's an instrumental album. I dig instrumental music. Kool and the Gangs 'Summer Madness' is probably my favorite song of all time. I just dont think it's a good instrumental record.

As we all know! Beastie's are organic....as for this album totally organic! you watch other artisits follow in pursuit.....maybe not now...but a year or two down the line, just like coldplay, they tryed to do what the Beasties did for there dvd, with 50 camares, 50 angles.....but only the Beastie's can ever make that happen! I suppose like Montey Pythan.....way ahead of there times...ahead of there game! I love the mix-up
:D

I didn't want you to think of me as an album snob because I'm not. We all have our tastes and preferences. If I'm going to be mean, then I'll tell you to put on "Girls" and do a keg-stand. Now go put on LTI, man.
So you admit that TMU is a stupid record that only appeals to the lowest common denominator then?
I guess you're calling me the lowest common denominator. I'll accept that. I just changed this as my greeting on my voicemail.
"Hello, you've reached the lowest common denominator. I'm not in right now..."

I'm glad they made this album the way they did. My collection already had 3 Beastie Boys multi-genre experimental albums and 3 Beastie Boys hip-hop albums. It didn't have a Beastie Boys album of original instrumental tracks. I think they could have really gone crazy and added some subtle vocals (oos and ahs and simple refrains), samples, and electronic stuff. But the whole point of the album was that it's just the five of them playing.

get over it!
also, you can't just add vocals to any instrumental.
a lot of songs on tmu would have to be stripped down for that since they are quite dense, and that's because they were intended to be INSTRUMENTAL!
