Hearing this made my day.

I predict another sprawling hop hop/instrumental epic a la CYH, IC, or HN.

Haha.

This interview is a little more interesting.

Crazy how he takes an a-political stance in 92 and by 94 they're becoming more and more conscious.

Nice to hear they are getting back to recording soon, only downside is we will have the guessing party waffle on about what it will be...lol

Some vitals in this one:
Interviewer: And what was the first thing you brought yourself?
Adrock: The first record I ever bought with my own money, the first album was the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Soundtrack"

thats the info I've been screaming for. Speculation on Mike D and MCA's first purchase? This is the shit I need to know! :D

Could he be talking about the much discussed second version of TMU? Someone had a theory on here a few days ago that the beasties were putting out as a stand alone album the jamming that usually precedes cutting down grooves into samples and songs for a new album. I pupued it at first, but now I'm thinking that may have been spot on. The timing just seems to work for that.

It seemed to me like he was just speculating on the new record. He even said "IF we make a new record". Looks pretty hopeful though. But yeah, they finish the tour and make another record. That's what they always do. He didn't say it was right around the corner.

i dont think he talks about a second version of the mix up, cause the only thing they have to do is paste vocals over the existing record, they don't need to record new material for it.

sweet interview. it's smarter to trap the bboys in solo interviews if you're looking for some straight answers.

New Record!!!!!!!!! Fuck yeah.

"What do you do when you're not beastie-boying?"

"That's all i do".

Thats a great quote, totally forget he said that shit! Being a b-boy for Ad-Rock at this point in his life is evidently an involuntary action for him, much like breathing. Dope!:D

We need another Hello Nasty......I hope they use loops from TMU, that would be fantastic.

They could feel like they owe it to the fans. I'm sure they're aware of how many people they disappointed by releasing an entirely instrumental album.

that interview gave me a reason to live. hahahaha.

i always find comfort in the fact that even when the beasties call it quits, you know at least adrock will keep plugging away for years. homeboy just can't quit it!

I don't know if they own, or are renting the space Oscilliscope is at, but office space in Manhatten has got to be extremely expensive. This ain't Atwater Village here, this is the most sought after real estate on the face of the earth, (office space in Manhatten).
Not to mention the extensive collection of equiptment, computers, and instruments they have in there, it only makes sense to utilize all of those resources as much as possible and keep producing music.

Oscilliscope Labs has got to be like being a kid in a candy store for any hardcore musician. I can't see them (or anyone) being able to afford to let that kind of an investment just sit there while they take another 5 year hiatus. I'd expect them to be quite busy recording for the next few years.

Consider the $50 concert tickets to the insane venues they're selling as an apology from them.

I'm sure they'll try harder next time.

I think the time between the end of the Hello Nasty tour and the beginning of work on TT5B (and even into recording, I think they reaaaaaally took their time on that one, just dicking around and meeting up once in a while with new beats) was time to focus on non-Beastie Boy stuff (except for the anthology and the DVD of course). They seem to be back in a big way.

thats logical and optimistic.(y) Nice call.

though im sure they have no problem affording such a space. these guys are fucking loaded.

I wonder what Mike D's bank balance is......

in think the hiatus was a crucial span of growing up for the beasties. with the increasing age, families, and maturity, they just needed to get a grasp on it, put shit in perspective and find a new approach and working habit that accomodating their changing lives and values.

Not to mention barbecue cook offs

I agree heartily with the theory that with their new "office space" they have been given the motivation to work harder and more often. That's something they didn't have back in the late 90's.

As an aside, does anyone actually know how rich the Michael and Adams are? I'm just intrigued to know what your earnings are when you don't sell out, selling out being Ice Cube, Puff P Diddy Daddy etc.

probably not very rich at all, they didnt get any money from Licensed to Ill and that was their most successful album and they do a lot of charity work. Plus whatever they do earn has to split equally between 3....sometimes 4,5,6 six people if your including Mix master, money mark and Alfredo.

So I think they've only got a few million each.

Suavee-Bolo
06-30-2007, 09:43 AM
They took the money they recieved from Capitol to record CYH, and instead of using it on studio time, they buily G-Son so they could have all the time in the world to expirement in the studio.

I'm guessing they did something similar with the money they recieved for TT5B, and used it to start Oscilliscope.

Whether they used other people's money, their own money, or a combo of the two, the bottom line is they've invested a lot (time & money) into creating the place.
You don't go to all that trouble to record one or two albums, and then invest even more money to just have it as a place to play cards and video games in.

Maybe they will use it to record more Beastie Boys joints, or maybe they will use it to produce for other artists, like they did for Bad Brains, but financially speaking they have to use it somehow, or it won't make sense to keep the space.

Brother McDuff
06-30-2007, 12:28 PM
im sure they get at least a little revenue from letting other bands like Le Tigre and the Bad Brains record there.

if you think about royalties, touring, merchandise, record sales, etc., im sure these guys've got more than a few million piece. remember that they are an ever popular group, 20+years and going, that means their back catalogue still sells exceptionally annually, not to mention whenever they realease a new record it stimulates a bit of a resurgence in their ither album sales. plus the radio plays them alot still, garnering those such royalties as well.

the touriong is where its at though. thats where the bank is made. im sure the label contributes significantly to these costs, not tom ention they sell out these shows and the tix aren't particularly cheap. i wonder if fredo, mark, and mmm get payed a percentage or a flat rate per show.

06-30-2007, 12:35 PM
Mark, Alfredo, and Mike probably get paid pretty well, but I'm sure Adam, Adam, and Mike make a lot more.

Oscilloscope so far seems to be where they record and let their friends (or wives) record. If they were to ever bring Grand Royal back they would probably have a lot more artists coming through.

Speaking of Grand Royal, I think that in some respects it's back. The new Bad Brains CD has an "Oscilloscope Records" logo on the back -- that's a record label.

Huge Thanks - sweet interview and great news - interviews like this are proof that if you can corner one Beastie on their own you can get a really fascinating, sincere interview (spoken almost entirely in quotables!?) - as opposed to the Monty Python-on-Acid that occurs when you try interviewing them all together.

Who gives a shit how rich they are? - they've got class like pink Champale!
