with your own money? I was too lazy to do a thorough search for a thread like this.

I had a decent amount of stuff my parents bought me from the Jackson 5 to Wierd Al to Duran Duran, but the first album I ever got with my own money was Suicidal Tendencies' first album. I think the album came out in 1983 but I got it in 1984 when I was in 4th grade.
I got it at the mall at a store called "The Square Circle". I felt soooo cool when I put it on the counter and pulled out my velcro Jimmy Z wallet to pull out my crisp $10 bill.

Still love the album.

What about you?

Star Wars soundtrack at Mr. Wigg's in Marion, Indiana. $8.98, I think, for the two-record set.

well, that was the first one I bought with my own money. The first tape I remember asking for (even though I know there were more before this (see original post)) was Wham!'s Make it Big. So as cool as you all may think I am, I'm not that cool.

Oh Jesus, that brings back memories of Butlins at Skegness when i was about 15! The shame! :D

The first single i bought was 'Fame' by Irene Cara. I would watch the show religiously every week and sing along wearing my favourite pink legwarmers.

The first album i bought was Now that's what i call music 3...yes 3! My favourite track was Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
Arn't we on Now 537 by now?

I honestly don't remember what my first CD was. But it was probably something as embarrasing as the above.

My first 8 track that I swore my life to love and listen to faithfully: Sesame Street, the one with "C is for Cookie". I remember "earning" the money to get have my parents purchase "the Chipmunks First Christmas" LP. And my aunt and uncle bought me a Rod Stewart LP for my 8th birthday (I really loved Rod Stewart and John Denver then). However, the first time I threw down money on the counter to purchase my very own music was "Men at Work"

Joeski Love. Good song.

First album purchased specifically for me was Thriller. On tape.
First album I ever stole was Licensed To Ill. Tape.
First album I acquired by means of allowing my dad to cut my hair, thereby saving him any barber expenses, affording him the surplus cash to go ahead and buy me something: Public Enemy's Yo! Bumrush The Show. On tape.
First album I purchased with money that I saved: Ice Cube's Death Certificate. On tape. Wow. That means that other people had been paying for my records and tapes for at least 7 or 8 years.

The newest one is #66.
I did think at one time that they restarted the series because of the low numbers, but nope. Guess the 80s weren't that long ago after all.

I remember the first 3 records I ever purchased with my own money.

Here are the 3 in order:

1. Prince - Purple Rain
2. Quiet Riot - Metal Health
and
3. License to Ill - Beastie Boys

Equal to the magic of hearing ILL for the first time, I bought my friend Mike the vinyl the very next week for his birthday.

Now, at said birthday party, he opened LOTS of gifts. As soon as he opened all of them, he immediately went to the record player and put in LICENSE TO ILL. We listened to that fucker 3 times in a row.

Everyone was in AWE of this new sound from some guys called "The Beastie Boys." The other gifts were already gathering dust while ILL became the ONLY talk of the evening. I remember Mike didn't even want to have cake. He just wanted to pick up that needle again to spin that new gem of his....again and again and again.

Bought by parents after just a little nagging (I was 13): David Bowie - Aladdin Sane

and I remember buying a tape of David Bowie's Diamond Dogs, went to the radio shop, said I wanted a tape and pointed it. The salesman said: "you're sure of your taste?" "YES!" I said. (I was 14).

I think that was my first compact disk as well. I still throw it on every once in awhile. The Bomb Squad made some great tracks. (y)

I think my first record was Sesame Street Fever. I disco danced my little three year old ass off.

My first tape... I'm not sure. It might have been the Jackson's Victory album. I remember listening to "State Of Shock" over and over again with those enormous headphones on my parents new stereo.

I had that. I loved that song. Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods? Sentimental as hell, but I dug it.
