Yauch really stepped it up. I said it before, but his bass is the key to most of the songs on TMU. Very well done! It keeps everything moving along. He became quite the bass player over the years.

It invites you (that being me) to shut the fuck up and comfortably enjoy silence from the voices inside your (my) head while they take you to 2007: A Beasties Odyssey.
I wasn't high at the time, but the first listen from A to Z had me imagining that I was on a Beastie Boys Space Shuttle, flying high to the moon.
They set up the stage on the moon and played a long, solid set called THE MIX-UP while the imaginary monkey and I got down with the grooves.
That, good people, is an example as to why:
A: I dig it the most
and
B: I look very forward to visiting said moon on August 17th in Denver.

It's a good summer-y album you can just chill out to. I listen to it when I'm on the computer late at night and it's relaxing. However, it's also funky fresh so I like pumping up the volume and listening to it in the car.
It's versatile.

here's a few things..
1. I like the whole concept/theme of the title...like they're mixing it up by giving us an all instrumental record, they're mixing it up by having a really crazy looking cover (all the others being simple, or subtle), they're mixing it up by putting on a hip hop show and an instrumental show, and "mix up" ties nicely into the whole mixed drink/cocktail type music vibe, too - which leads me to..
2. It is the prefect companion to In Sound From Way Out
(and hell they both have Martini glasses on their covers!!).
3. It's a punk statement - putting out a record that THEY want to put out, despite knowing it wouldn't sell a ton of records..it's very punk thing to do..and let's not forget they started as a punk group!
4. The Gala Event (the song)
5. The Gala Event (the show)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was more or less how I was going to reply. They could shit in a cd case and put it on the shelves and I'd adore it at this point. Say what you will about that.

the music is sexy. the sounds are polished, but still funky. i think it's cool because it was totally unique thing to put out at this time. nobody was really expecting it, and i don't think that any other group could have pulled it off.
it's very genuine/raw - it's 100% beastie's!!
my 6 year old daughter loves it!
take care,

interesting, my 5 year old son also loves some tracks of this album, his favorite is "off the grid". he got really hooked to that song, maybe cause of the drums/percussion and fuzzy bass parts.

1. cow bells
2. jingle bells
3. marching band whistles

I can't say nothing ...
it has a 'roots in tact - bases covered - nicely grown so chillllin' modality about it, with a hint of hmmm look out.
And could mean any number of other things from who is who to what is what.
In any case they've beaten and said all there is... so to me The Mix Up is an easily digestable soundtrack/ medium to show the mass confusion clearly - to pass the time, done with skill and elegance.
Chanoble?

Oh and to keep a/ The Revolution alive and just within grasp, of course - musically speaking.
And if I may be so.. it also has a man-made, genuine 'perpetual mix' texture - like just when one thinks it's discernable to some degree, it keeps open, versatile, and formidable in forming everything yet remaining formless... Like, it's s-t-i-l-l up to you... to figure it out and let it settle correctly.
