-- somebody throws on something unexpected and very cool.
Yesterday, somebody threw on Lou Reed's The Blue Mask for a little bit. I heard this fretless bass rumble, and I was like, " -- is that...?" And sure enough, it was "Waves of Fear." Holy shit! Someone has taste! (Maybe the same person who had thrown Can's Ege Bamyasi last month?)
I mean, good stuff gets played all the time, but it's just cool to not hear the latest good stuff, or the good stuff from some radio playlist from somewhere, but a genuine surprise blast of goodness out of nowhere that no one would've ever programmed unless they had taste, not marching orders.
Contrast this with the chain book store I was in earlier where they were belatedly pushing Jerry Lee Lewis' new two-month-old album of covers with all the guest artists blah blah blah. Their promo for this was to play roughly thirty second snippets of a song, fade out, interminable pause, fade in another thirty second sample, fade out, etc. It didn't sound like the covers were very good (Zeppelin, Creedence, Springsteen, etc.), but this made it sound even worse. Ugh. Who in the world thinks this is the best way for the general public to hear music for their shopping pleasure, and -- God help me -- how many consumers actually agree?
So God bless the independent record store, while a few still remain. (y)
