First time I saw this. My boss came in and handed it to me and told me that he got it as change from the post office. Apparently America's trying to steer away from paper money, since it costs more. 18 month life span for paper, 30 year life span for coins.

Craziness.

The US Postal Service has given $1 coins as change from vending machines for at least a decade.

Those are kinda neat, though.

Yeah, it's the first coin of a series, just like the quarters. The new quarters started back in 2000 and they're lasting until 2008, and those are the only types of quarters being made. So for the next however many years, they're just going to make presidential $1 coins. Adams, because he was our 2nd president, then they'll go on down the line.

Yeah, he said the teller gave it to him, which was kinda weird.

Our notes are made from polymer, (plastic) so they last a lot longer. Paper notes to me sound rediculous now. Something that gets passed thru so many hands and needs to last and they make it from PAPER??

Upside to our notes is if you accidently leave cash in ya pockets and put your clothes thru the wash, no biggie. The notes are waterproof.

We phased out $1 notes in 1984 and replaced with coins, $2 coins followed in 1988.

We should've been done with paper dollars and pennies a long time ago. Waaaaaaaaayyyy too expensive.

How would stuff work without pennies? Would we just round to nickels? I mean we'd have to change prices of everything, because stuff that ends in .99 is bound to need pennies once tax is included.

My only problem with coins instead of paper money is the fact that I absolutely love my wallet but my zippered change section is too small. I can fit all my cards and pictures and odds and ends in my wallet, but I can fit only a limited amount of coins. I can't tell you how many times I've had a bunch of dollar bills on me, and if they were coins they may not all fit. :(

I would assume that cash transactions would be rounded up or down, and plastic or check transactions would carry on as usual.

Ours is becoming an overwhelmingly cashless society anyway, and doing away with largely symbolic currency would be a step in the right direction.

I've been using the dollar coins since the Susan B.'s. You have to ask for them at most banks and a lot of them won't have them, but I just like them better.

Basically, I have them for tips and stuff. Hopefully servers don't hate me, but it just seems like seeing three or four dollar coins on a table is cooler than dollar bills. Maybe that's just me.

I was glad when they switched to the gold Sakagewea (sp) coins, though. They're easier to spot than the Susan B's. I wondered how often somebody thought "Cheap fucker only left seventy-five cents!" before they realized it was three bucks, or whatever.

Yeah they have been phasing small denomination paper money out here now for decades.

Even the humble "fiver" seems to be on it's last legs. It's not used in cash machines, so they havent printed any for years. Now it's rare so you get anything from between 3 to 5 large coins instead. :(

I dont miss the £1 note at all now though, so maybe I'll get used to it.

Yeah, and try spending coins at the strip club. Girls will be breaking their clear plastic heels on those things. (n)

Anyone see the show where people salvage damaged paper currency from fires, floods and the like?

It's crazy...even if you have a fire and have a corner of a dollar....it is still considered worthy

we round 96 and 97 cents down and 98 and 99 up. so something advertised for $9.99 is actually $10.

there are people out there who actually make sure their grocery purchases add up to a .x6 or .x7 so it gets rounded down and not up! :D

I'm sure that on military basses overseas they'd still be using the paper money. Coins cost way more than paper money in shipping prices.

Also, you could hardly find coins as change. Most the time, give us these damn paper pogs as change. Good luck tryin to get a soda from a machine from those pogs. They only take coins.

Perhaps they could have fake paper bills you could buy at the door. Like Itchy & Scratchy money, only the strippers would actually accept it.

I hate carrying around coins. I could see going to the plastic money, but I want bills damn it! I also think that it's vital to keep the penny and $1 bill. They're practical. I use both frequently.

This makes me very sad. I don't want my dollar bills taken away.

that's what they do at strip clubs here. you go and buy "stripping dollars" which aren't necessarily worth $1 and are just photocopied bits of paper.

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO MAKE IT RAIN ON DEM HATERZ?

I guess coins will hurt once they are thrown. So perhaps it will make it more fun for the ballers to do.

Yeah, I was thinking how it'd be easier for soda machines and stuff. Uncrinkling ones are futile and they always just get spit back out. :(

I always found 1$ bills ridiculous. But since you don't have cigarette machines anyway...
