I straight up killed the motherfucker!
This is controversial, I know. But, here's how it went down:
I PULLED THE PLUG! This was three weeks ago today. A little late with the announcement, but I had to make sure I was in the clear.
To ensure there were no witnesses, I had to take out the dish as well. A Woman, we'll call her a "Customer Service Agent," had to be notified because (according to her) she had to use her digits to type in some ill shit to ensure the deal was sealed.

I did that for a year once, but the Tour De France was almost here, so I had the cable turned back on...
I used the year to catch up on old movies, (rented and owned), and spent more time outside on my bike..

I've got this big ass 40" lcd t.v. that I rarely watch. I'll watch my dvds through it and play my games on but it's done very seldom. It just takes too much time over the other things I want to do.

I hardly watch TV anymore, what's on mostly bores me nowadays. I tried to watch less TV during winter and eventually got used to doing other stuff. It's not that I'm super-productive now or anything, but its feels kinda good not paying to much attention on the box.
On the other hand I watch films and dvd:s and play some videogames. I spend serious time on the net too.
Internet killed the TV-star, I guess.
Substituting a TV fix with a computer/internet fix is hilarious.
Come back when you haven't used a computer for entertainment for a while and I'll give you kudos. Then again Ill tell you that you are weak because you got on the internet to say you haven't been on it for X amount of weeks.

I've only watched software (VHS, DVDs, Laserdiscs) for about 20 years now. I'm sure I've seen the occasional programming at someone's house or something, but I couldn't tell you what.
I know I watched Letterman host the Oscars.
I know I watched news coverage of 9/11.
Ummm.

So MANY negative motherfuckers online.
Simply stated, it's a step in the right direction for me.
And, unfortunately, I have to be online A LOT for work. Fucking off online is a means to an end for now.

I don't watch TV because of the commercials, but I do watch shows online. It has helped though with not sitting and watching hours of shit just because it happened to be on so I'm definitely wasting less time which is nice.
I do miss comedy central a lot though.

I <3 TV
but I don't have cable and I don't watch it nearly as often as I used to. I was at my mom's house a month back and they have like a million channels...I kept flipping through and watching shows, but I got overwhelmed by all the choices. I felt unsatisfied and bored, even though a bunch of interesting stuff appeared to be on. I just kept eating taquitos and leaving the room to poke around in my mom's bathroom drawers.

I always want to, but then sometimes I get sick and I'm laying there and I realize what it's good for. But I throw on DVDs usually vs cable. The few TV shows I like I've been just recording or downloading.
The one part of cable I do like is the movie channels on demand. I <3 movies.

no way. watching television is for many a totally nondiscriminatory event. people just sit down and don't move for hours, regardless of whats on. whereas with files on the compy there isn't this endless stream off images to be trapped by.
totally cutting yourself off from tv shows is pretty unnecessary. it's the most powerful medium out there and some still produce amazing things for it. going cold turkey from everything is pretty nearsighted and you militantly deprive yourself of some excellent productions.
It has helped though with not sitting and watching hours of shit just because it happened to be on so I'm definitely wasting less time which is nice.

funny you mention this being as I just watched Taxi Driver for the 140,000th time last night and when I read the title I thought of that scene.
Not having a TV, however, isnt anything impressive...not to mention everyone without a TV points out how they dont have a TV like its some amazing feat like you grew gills and piss lasers.

stage6.divx.com has catered for a fair old while, but i still enjoy it when someone has the box on and you flick channels only to stumble upon a gem such as the sky at night or richard starkey's history of britain.

yeah, i was gonna say something similar to that, but uh...springer was on
but no, i think you're right, downloading TV episodes is completely different form sitting down and watching TV. for all the things you said, i can't say it any better. and also because it doesn't make your schedule revolve around tv. instead of all like "oh i can't go out today, lost is on" it's more like "i can watch it whenever"
tivo's kind of a gray area
but yeah i mean there's some very valuable stuff to be found on television. the simpsons was an example, arrested development, the office, they're comedies that are on par with any sort of "high brow" type of art, and i don't think that you earn the "i watch tv" stigma just by watching the episodes.
this is a really incoherent post because i'm exhausted but basically what i'm saying is that drederick is right

since i am unable to download the shows i want to watch, i read the tv guide and plan what shows i am going to watch. i sit down for these shows, once they are over, i get up and do something else.
so, by your definition, i am not "watching tv" either.

ughhh. well, I refer you to Bob's post.
through downloading shows, you can bypass all the demands and restrictions, e.g scheduling, commercials, availability, that the actual television has. instead you just enjoy the products that the medium as a cultural institution offers. in case you hadn't realized, there's a difference between a literal television and what comes out of it. your earlier point about watching movies on a tv would seem to indicate you struggle with this concept.
anyway, that PM you got was pretty stupid.

i don't struggle, i disagree and i think its a load of crap :)
my earlier point about movies followed my point about downloaded tv shows. my point being, i honestly think all this stuff about being a slave to the tv is nonsense. you're watching tv show and movies on a screen? and you honestly think its that different from someone watching scheduled programming? well i think you're fooling yourself!
you pay for internet yes? so now you're paying for television. i watch tv for free. so i could argue that tv has you by the balls more than it has me.
and yeah what about tivo? not that i have tivo, but i am often out, so i record shows, allowing me to FF through the ads.

i don't really think that works. downloading tv shows is only one of the many uses of a paid internet connection. if you bought it for the sole purpose of downloading TV, then yeah, that would be lamer than just watching TV, but even then it isn't about the money (and i dunno how it is all over the world. but in the US you have to pay for it anyway), it's about how it impacts your daily life. it's the difference between "it's 9:00pm on a wednesday, it's time for me to watch lost now" and "i have an hour of free time, i'm going to watch lost now". if that hour of free time happens to fall on 9:00 pm on a wednesday, great, but if you've purposely scheduled your day just so that you can have that specific time free to watch TV, then that's the kind of impact that i'm talking about.
and yeah what about tivo? not that i have tivo, but i am often out, so i record shows, allowing me to FF through the ads.
i figure tivo/recording shows are basically the same thing as downloading them

Nice one. I rarely watch, it maybe gets turned on once every two or three weeks on average, and that's for late night shows (Conan) if I think of it.
I like knowing it's there, but I forget about it mostly and end up reading or DIYing around the house if I'm bored. Being a workaholic helps too :(

just in regards to the cost issue, internet here is extremely expensive and slow compared to other parts of the world, even if they are only using a small amount of their internet to dl shows, its still quite a high cost per mb. tv here is free, not cable obviously, but we don't quite have the same rate of cable use here (again, very expensive).
how is me saying i'm going to be at free at 9pm on a wednesdy all that different to someone deciding that they are going to watch s1 of heroes over the weekend? i understand its different, but different enough to get on your high horse and declare that you no longer require "tv"?
