Moot brought this up some time back:

Another "so I finally watched" thread.....

“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada”….I have a whole new appreciation for Tommy Lee Jones as a filmmaker and as a redeemed actor for this effort…..(y)

Holy crap. Up until the last few minutes which were fine but a little rushed, this was one terrific movie. Beautiful looking, well acted (you haven't seen Tommy Lee this good before. You haven't), well directed, and Levon Helm even has a good, small role.

Barry Pepper's underrated.

Good call, Moot. This shouldn't have taken me so long, and I wish I would've caught it in the theater now.

8.5/10.

Underrated isn't even the word...this was a fantastic movie that got far too little attention.

Go watch it people! (y)

I bought the DVD a couple months ago. I enjoyed it, despite the morbid theme.

It's a really good movie. It doesn't suffer from a lot of actorly stuff that a lot of actors' first movies do. (To be fair, it looks like Jones directed something for TV once.) It's not an actors' showpiece sort of thing (while still leaving room for plenty of good acting), it's not literary in a way that sacrifices film, and -- though it's deliberately paced -- it moves along and maintains interest without straining. I do wish there had been a few minutes in there toward the end, because a certain decision gets made and accepted just a little fast, pacing-wise. Otherwise, it's a beauty.

Yeah, I remember watching it and liking it alot when it first came out. It had all the qualities a great movie should have, including the steamy sex scene where Barry comes home and crushes his wife from the back over the sink for a good 2.5 seconds. She was all about it, too.

"I need to lose a few pounds."

"No you don't... you're one hot mama!"

*enters her from behind as she does the dishes; grunts, rolls eyes, makes faces, has orgasm; fairly affectionate pat on the ass*

You know a problem with a scene like that? I felt so sorry for Barry Pepper, because I have some idea of what kind of direction and negotiation it takes to get an actor on film looking like that.

"...but you really think my character is that... I dunno... that stupid?"

"He's not 'stupid,' Barry, so much as unaware. He's just bein' a good husband -- she doesn't feel pretty, he's, you know, he wants to show her she's pretty, still makes him horny -- "

"But you want me to roll my eyes into my head."

"At first, it's just for her. Then he's, he's gettin' his thing on, and he's been bored in the truck lookin' at Hustler all day, so -- yeah, he gets into it. She's got a nice ass, he's just been in dust all day -- this is marriage."

"I got it, I got. I just think I'll look stupid."

"I won't let you look stupid. Okay -- January? Ready, babe? Lean over that sink again. Look at the dishes when he's doing it. You want to finsih the dishes."
