It's called "television programming."

But, yeah.

I'm pretty sure there is a variety called "American cheese," kind of in the sandwich-cheese sort of vein.

I think in other countries, it's known as inedible.

Because just saying "cheese" implies that you'll be getting some kind of actual cheese. Like, I would assume cheddar. American cheese needs a separate designation, and "processed cheese product" is too many words.

I work at a sandwich store where we have a vast variety of choices for breads and cheeses and toppings and such. Sometimes people come in and say " I want a turkey and cheese sandwich" and I stand there kind of like  while I wait for them to give me more specifics, and when they don't I have to walk them through the selection process of picking a bread, roasted or smoked turkey, and picking a cheese. Then comes the fun part of "what else do you want on it?" i.e. mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and various other things. Then I usually get a response like "well what usually comes on it" I think it's important to note that when not getting one of our "signature sandwiches" with a fancy nape and specific build, like, when people just come in and say they want turkey and cheese, it's called a "create your own"

My favorite is every Wed. this lady comes in and gets ham and American cheese on sourdough. And if we had plain white, she would get that, but the closes we have is sourdough. It's practically white. But that's all. Bread, ham, American cheese. The price for a create your own is the same regardless of what you get put on it. About $7. Also, we are right beside a grocery store.

To be fair, there are some really fine cheeses made all across our country.

It's the stuff that's distributed all across our country (particularly in school meals and hospitals and vending machine sandwiches and fast food places and) that kinda sucks.

For regular, find-it-anywhere cheese, I have to go with Swiss.

For regular, not-too-hard-to-find, I have to go with Asiago.

For local cheeses, it's really hit and miss. We had some stuff at this winery that a couple people were oohing and ahhhing over that I very desperately wanted to spit out.

Brett calls it "Processed Cheese."

Processed cheese is really disgusting. Plasticy and salty.

It's been on this board before, but anyway...

Getting stoned one time with a buddy who was in heaven being high and eating Cheez Whiz spritzed from the can or onto a cracker or just his finger. So I talked about how unnatural spraying-cheese-from-a-can is, and we started lobbing around least likely Whiz products. Funniest one (at the time) we could come up with was Turkey Whiz. That joke has lasted a while.

Squeeze-cheese is a godsend! If it's not so runny, you can make exact portions on each Dorito. By the time the bottle is 1/3rd empty it makes a sucking noise reminiscent of a good in-and-out, you know! :D

I used to love American cheese, because it was the only thing we bought. Due to my dad's migraines, he's on a strict diet where he can't have certain items, one being aged cheese. So, American was all we had for a long, long time. Not like I wasn't introduced to other cheeses, it's just that they were never around.

Now that I've been on my own, I haven't once bought American cheese. It really sucks. Swiss FTW!

are you refering to the thin slice of protein that sits on top of hamburgers to make them 10p extra?

....mostly fat. Calling it "protein" is like calling Rosie O'Donnell "journalist."

When we say "American cheese" we're referring to this crap. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_cheese) I'm sure there's other types of cheeses produced in America, but there's only one type of American cheese.

American cheese has a society.....

http://www.cheesesociety.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1

Mission Statement

The purpose of the American Cheese Society shall be:
1. To uphold the highest standards of quality in the making of cheese and related fermented milk products.
2. To uphold the traditions and preserve the history of American cheesemaking.
3. To distinguish between the thin slice of cheese and the clear wrapper.

Swiss Cheese is a rip-off! It's the only cheese I can bite into and miss.
