what is it?

seems like lately I haven't been investing in quality shoes because things start falling apart on them within approximately 3.5 months.

I didn't think I was particularly hard on them...espcially my 4 inch wedges..it's not like I walk miles in them. but they are falling apart. am I being punished because i bought them on sale?

^ ^yes. see I'm thinking it can't be the cost of the shoe because I've had shoes from payless that I wore constantly that have held up for 5+ years.

I guess they don't make em like they use to?

Me too. I also have a pair of heels that I bought last year for $12 from Payless and wear them pretty much everyday to work and they're still in good condition. They're black and strappy and a really good purchase.

Of the 20 or 30 pair currently in my closet I'd say the oldest are about 6-7 yrs and still in very good condition.

It's hard to say because it really depends on how you use them. I'm on my feet a lot and being flat footed I have a weird gait I guess I wear out the shoe under the balls of my feet pretty bad. I have a pair of sneakers I got, I think last November, than the rubber is so thin under the balls of my feet, when I don't have the shoes on the toes curl up because theres not enough material to hold it straight. It's hard to describe, I hope that makes sense. But yeah, it depends a lot on the person and what you do in your shoes and how you walk. Or maybe you just keept buying shoes that are manufactures poorly.

I really need a new pair of super comfy shoes for work cause being on me feet all day kills me... I've been off, sitting, and shoeless for at least 30 mins now and my feet still hurt like crazy, but shoes aren't at the top of my list of financial obligations right now.

Oh yeah, environment could matter too, like if it's some kind of material that doesn't hold up well to moisture and you're wearing them in wet/humid places, or something like that you know. Yeah.

I still can't believe this isn't bob's thread. Doesn't he have domain on all things that have to do with shoe questions?

I have the correct answer, but until bob steps up (pun intended) to ask, I'm deaf, dumb and blind.

A pair of shell toe Adidas will outlive the grandkids who will disappoint you more than your actual kids.

I've had some of my kicks for well over a decade and still get asked if they're new. Hard bottoms/Dress shoes/Wallabees/Timbs etc will generally last a fraction of that time, depending on frequency of wear, what kind of weather they're worn in, their durability and whether they just go out of style.

A lot of sneakers are timeless. So I tend to try and keep them fresh.

i'm actually shocked that all of you who have purchased shoes from Payless actually let them, let alone have gotten years out of them...

I am a shoe whore and Payless (although I haven't purchased them in over 10 years) were the worst, most uncomfortable shoes I ever have put on my dogs...

i really can't understand buying shoes from payless under any circumstances.

if your shoes are wearing out, you have to look at how you're wearing them and what their purpose is. some shoes aren't meant to be worn daily. that's why you need several pairs -- so that you don't end up accidentally abusing a pair you adore.

i have some that i've spent $250 on, and some that i bought off of overstock for $40. they're all good shoes though, and all of them will be worn for several years because i have a lot of shoes that i can rotate through, so that no one pair bears the burden of daily use. the only pair of shoes i have that ever suffer are the one pair of navy work shoes i have, and i blame shoe companies for not making more shoes in navy.

It always sounds like you do noble work, but this shoe post makes you sound crazy shallow. Am I misinterpreting a typical female shoe fixation?

everybody's talkin about heels and i only wear sneakers. and the absolute most i think i could spend on shoes would be about $70, and that's the high end. more like $40 would be the ideal, but most really good shoes are more than that. but yeah, my being a poor college student gets in the way of me replacing my shoes regularly enough.

a friend of mine, her brother is into... im not exactly sure what he's into actually, but i think it's related to sports therapy type stuff, and she said he recomended some kind of shoe inserts that you boil and they form to your feet. sounds really weird, bit a possible option.

i dont suppose anyone has any boil-able shoe inserts or has had experience with them?

edit:oopsies i posted this in the wrong thread

i'd say so. beth isn't shallow in the least.

i have a pair of chucks i've been wearing since i was 16. that's 7 years. they've got some wear on them, but i still wear them every day to work. but i use some gel insoles in them that i change ever few months, so they're still comfy. i wouldn't buy a new pair of converse because nike owns them now, but back in the day the low-tops would last forever. oddly enough for me it was the high-tops that fell apart quickly. guaranteed within a couple of months the sole would be flapping off and the heel would be crumbling to pieces, irritating the fuck out of your foot.

i've only bought shoes at payless once or twice, and they're such painful pieces of shit i can't imagine ever going back there unless it was for a costume. i'd rather not wear cardboard, thanks.

yes, you are.

payless shoes are murder on your feet because the materials are horrible, poor arch support, etc. think about everything you need your feet to do in a typical day, and how long your life expectancy is, etc. you should take care of your feet. my dad had issues as he aged, and i'm starting to develop some, so i won't EVER walk into a payless shoe store. i also will no longer wear a pair of skechers, dress or athletic style. they're just made weird or something, or maybe the leather just isn't soft enough for what my shoe needs are, but they hurt my feet no matter what i do.

i hate skechers with a passion. they're all either ripoffs of other brands (exhibit a) (http://www.skechers.com/catalog/browse.do?function=displayProductList&gender=W&catId=-1&index=0&viewAll=false&sort=newest&prodId=21044#) or hideous monstrosities that came straight outta 1997 (exhibit b) (http://www.skechers.com/catalog/browse.do?function=displayProductList&gender=W&catId=-1&index=21&viewAll=false&sort=newest&prodId=589&styleCode=30000#). not only are the shoes ass-ugly, but they're really shittily made. i bought some on a whim a while back that looked like converse ripoffs with some cool embroidery, and ended up returning them the next day because the way they were cutting into my feet. it was awful. so stiff and so badly cut. hate them.

my feet haven't grown since i was 12 years old, so over time i've had many pairs of shoes and never had to buy new ones when i outgrew them. threw heaps out cos they got old and dusty or ugly over time.

i haven't bought a pair of shoes since june last year. the only shoes of mine that fall apart are the shoes i wear to work everyday, since i can't drive, my work shoes get quite a workout.

they actually started falling apart (the sole wore out) after about 3 months but i just put inserts inside the shoes and continue to wear them to work every day. i only have a problem if i need to walk in the rain, cos the water comes in through the sole :o

but my sneakers never ever wear out or break, they just start to lose their shape after 5 or so years, if i wear them a lot.

i keep my "good" shoes in their shoe boxes.
