I am a cashier, which requires much standing. It seems standing for 4 or more hours leads to me being in some really bad pain. My feet hurt, my ankles hurt, my hips hurt... and not just while I'm standing. Sometimes my feet actually get worse if I sit down, its when the pressure gets released it makes them hurt worse for awhile. Even if I get off and sit down and don't get up for the rest of the night, I can expect to hurt for several hours.

I've always been like this, I mean I've noticed it since I first started working and therefore standing for extended periods. I thought it was kind of normal, but I mentioned it to someone to night and they reassured me that it is not (which makes sense when I think about that I don't hear other people bitching about it all the time and people seem to not understand when I ask if I can sit down cause my feet hurt that I REALLY need to sit down). Probably the worst of the pain comes from my ankles, followed by feet and hips. Ankles and feet are pretty damn close though.

So to the question, is there anyone else who has experienced this? Do you have any tips? Apparently I need to find a better shoe, but I've had several shoes that felt fine for normal everyday walking, but that I still get this pain when wearing at work. I have really flat feet, is this just something that I am going to have to live with?

I'd answer that, but I'm not a doctor. Maybe go see a chiropractor or physio?

I recently changed careers to where I stand hours and hours and hours instead of sitting behind a desk...

I have purchased some Easy Spirit, Merrill and Simple shoes and flip-flops and it has helped a lot...

I'm a nurse and spend most of my shift on my feet. I wear Dansko clogs. They may be pricey, but they are so comfortable.

bobby pretty much runs 24/7 on hot asphalt. he wears nike air monarchs, because he needs the extra arch support.

i make my shoe choice for work depending on what i'm going to be doing. i'll wear my super high heels only when i know i'm going to be sitting at my desk for the bulk of the day.
