The good people over at AstraZeneca will test a new drug for alzheimers. I'll be drinking it and there's a one in three chance I'll get the placebo drug.
It's been tested on animals in much higher doses than I'll be exposed to. The worst effect on those poor creatures was spasms, and some minor passing psychological disturbances.
I'm at the hospital for two full days, plus three short visits for testing and such. They pay me about 800 usd for the trouble.
Ill probably end up like Bruce Banner or something.

I've got like 10 friends who work for AstraZeneca. I should tell them to hook me up as a test bunny.

It's easy money, that's what it is. Nothing else.

When I had breaks between classes at Maryland, I'd participate in these language experiments. Stuff that tested how long it took me to read, how well my comprehension was when I'm not allowed to go back and re-read, how I interpret words that are similar but not quite the same, etc.
$10 a pop, and it lasted 10 minutes! It was sweet.

Weren't you clubbing seals two years back? Anything to avoid getting a "real job"...
I wouldn't trust those mad scientists for shit. You could end up sterile or some such shit...

That seal business never happened.
It's not like they're trying to fool me. Sure noone can tell the effects of some new substance, and of course there is a risk of bad stuff happening. However I believe the chance of that is very very minimal.
You might be right about avoiding a "real job" though. It kinda scares me. I've had too many bad experiences working.

Yeah well, so this is the last day of the trials here at AstraZenaca and I'm awaiting going home in a couple of hours right now. None of us lab-monkeys have had any bad effects of the drug that we drank yesterday morning, although this one other dude doing another trial (scizophrenia) seems pretty drowsy and responds real slow to everything. I think he's crashed in front of a TV now.
Yesterday was pretty intense whan it comes to the testing and everyone lay in bed from early morn til after lunch with multiple EKG:s and bloodsamples and blood pressure being collected. Had to lay ABSOLUTELY still for first 60 minutes and a little later for 75 minutes for EKG:s. That was a little uncomfortable after a while, as you might understand.
When I finally got up I had to wear this electrical gadget that was attached to my chest with five cables so that we could be constantly monitored. Thank god that was removed this morning. Also a little plastic tap in the arm for easy-blood access, to avoid multiple stinging basically. That's also gone and it's all about killing time right now.
Well what can I say. I would probably consider doing it again. We've been treated really good and the facility is top knotch. No expenses spared I suppose and there is right now probably a widescreen TV to patient ratio of about one to one. I guess 45 hours is allright, but longer trials, like 10+ days would probably bore the crap out of me. Forget about going outside, thats a no-no.
It's easy money that's why I do this. And that's why Astra Zeneca do it too. These evil pharmaceutical giants make billions you know. It ain't charity I can tell you that much.
ps. Nurses are not totally hot here. We'll, actually one is kinda.

Being paid to be a guinea pig for medical research, or any research in Australia is illegal however researchers are allowed to "compensate" participants for their loss of time, travel expenses etc...so yeah, we couldn't do that here even if we wanted to. I have participated in some non medical research projects, but I'd be dubious about any medicinal based study. I read about these people in Britan that were paid to test out a new drug by some pharmacutical company, there were 8 of them, half with placebo and half without. A while after taking the new drug that was meant to be some sort of anti-inflammatory some of the people started convulse and all their muscles were contorting they were screaming and writhing in pain apparently and the others were watching hoping that they'd gotton the placebo. All the people that had the new drug suffered the same symptoms although some were more severe than others. At the time of reading the article a couple of them were still on life support. The worst part was that because it was a new drug they had no idea of the antidote or even what was causing the severe adverse reactions.
Good luck though I hope that doesn't happen to you.

i agree
considering the nature of this trial and the very rigorous procautions that has to be made, and greenlighted by different authoroties i believe the cances of harm are basically nonexistant in this case, i don't feel like I'm risking my health really
mishaps are extremely rare in clinical trials

after hell broke loose in that london hospital last year the terms of medtrials have been revised around the globe basically

Hahaha, are you sure?
there is plenty of mistakes and bad shit that happen but you don't hear much about them because then nobody would want to be a guinea pig anymore.
