went to my first one last night. had a mad time, we only came third tho so we missed out on $650
some of the questions were fucked tho. ok chemists, what element has the highest melting point?
here's one for abcdefz - what was elvis's last movie?
and the question to win the jackpot, Mary Campbell of Columbus, Ohio is the only woman to do what twice?
bonus round was naming the birth stones of certain months which we totally fucked up, but still managed to get 2 right thanks to naming random stones from diablo 2 :D
is there anything like this in america? oh, also, see if you can get this. what is the only US state that shares a border with one other state? we couldn't get it :(

If my school chemistry serves me correctly, i think this is Carbon.
I love pub quizzes. I used to be a regular at my local pub quiz night (our team was called 'brains in a jar' (y)) but we never won. In fact, one particular team one every single week and were always so bloody smug about it...
That prize is pretty bang on though! The usual British pub quiz prize is a gallon of beer!

CORRECT! techincally it's correct but we put tungsten which is morally correct  well you win $50 or you can go for the jackpot question and win yourself lots of money.
oh, and our token english/scottish pomgolian couldn't get What do Scottish people refer to as a Ben?

Tuesday night has pub quizs all over town here. I've been to a few and we've won twice. the bar tab that you win is always no where near what you end up drinking throughout the night, but still, it's a bit of fun. however, Tuesday night is also cheap cinema night so I usually go see a film.

Typical pub question: What's the highest growing grass in the world? Answer =bamboo. Insert quizmasters line: "The stuff in my closet". And the crowd goes wild.

I have been pushing for one at work for a bit. were you guys just ordering drinks at the bar? did they have to close anything off to do the quiz? was it busy? what was the prize? most importantly, did everybody have a good time?
icy manipulator
07-18-2007, 01:29 AM
nah, it wasn't really busy. the place we go to has 5 sections and it's more of a restaurant in the week. there was 12 teams and the prize was $50 or $650 if you went for the jackpot question. we all had a mad time. between the groups we would've easily spent more than $650 on drinks and food. just make the jackpot question incredibly hard and you're sweet. we also had bonus rounds where you had to shoot hoops, play darts etc. we got our asses kicked in those rounds tho :(:(

hellllll yes i have, and yes, on a tuesday.
kid p does my ex still work there? he loves a quiz. or he used to at least, we'd go to the tuesday night quiz at carnegies.
the best we ever did was coming third. we got novelty top hats and those tshirts that look like you are wearing a tux. and maybe a becks voucher.
first prize i think is a carton of becks or something. nothing amazing. but its free to play so *shrug*
edit: ok also at carnegies they use the whole of carnegies for the quiz and have a dude on a mic and it comes through all the speakers, people usually go and get drinks at the bar in between rounds (5 rounds of 10 questions - although one is done on paper - identify the celebs from the badly photocopied photos) or meals or whatever. um other rounds are usually general knowledge, one time they had a simpsons round, and always a music round where you hear a short clip of music and have to name the artist and the song (2 points)
everyone has fun. there is a prize for best team name, winner is usually the group with a funny/topical team name, or a team name that sucks up to the quizmaster.
clancy's in freo also has a successful tuesday quiz night you could check out.

I haven't been to a pub quiz, but Gearclub (http://www.gearfest.com/) always has a rock'n'roll quiz before the bands go on. Questions are really underground rock'n'roll (well some are, there's always some easier ones like which makeup style belongs to which Kiss) and the last one is a rockn'roll song backwards (I'm still kicking myself not getting Born to loose.....)

I think I could get most of the birthstones as I've done some chackra healing. Elvis' last one would be a guess and isn't the only state with one neighbourgh Florida?

Haha, you translated Newswanstone into Newpigstone! (y) That's worth some bonus points. I actually quite liked it 'cause it looked like some D&D nut had his crib painted allover with fantasy frescoes, Ludwig was very much into Wagner operas like Lohengrin and all that Holy Grail myth. Unfortunately it only deserves mention as one of the 7 most efficient tourist traps of the world. Wasn't much business when I was there, but it's expensive and designed for maximum tourist processing.

which toy first shown at a Nuremburg convention has sold 100 million units by 1982?

1) chemistry -- I dunno. Is diamond an element?
2) Elvis -- tricky. I've never been an Elvis-in-movies fan. I'm assuming this is the last performance he did for a movie, not last movie with any footage of him, like This is Elvis or something.
So I'm going to guess... I dunno. Aloha from Hawaii? I dunno.
3) Mary Campbell -- again, I don't know. I'm guessing win the state lottery.
4) Birth stones I might know three or four.
This is hard.
