I want to quit smoking. Bad. I smoke approx. two packs a day. I feel like ass constantly, and my head's all heavy/fuzzy-ish.

My only concern, which is totally shallow- I don't want to gain a load of weight. It's taken me two years to lose a good 20lbs. and I can finally say that I feel comfortable in my own skin with the weight gone. So, how can I quit without (if possible) gaining it back?

What have been some of your methods, ways to quit? I heard from a friend that she would suck on cinnamon sticks, breathe through them, hold them like a cigarette...

Thats like smoking bananas in "My name is Earl". Start rolling your own, you'll smoke a bit less for sure, and it's less expensive, then make up your mind about it.

Why do people gain weight when they quit smoking? Is it because they eat a load of crappy food when craving a smoke?

It has something to do with an oral fixation, I think

I could suck cocks (!)

oral fixation. people are use to having something in their mouth all the time...a cigarette. so when they quit they often substitute food for ciggy.

I recommend you exchange the cigarette habit to a cocaine habit. No weight gain there.

Damn it Bob, keep your head in the game son. I don't think Boston is too far from Scranton, and you are tall. It's like a win-win.

I don't understand how relatively safe supplements such as ephedra and pro-hormones are banned because they may, if greatly misused and abused, cause harm. While cigarettes remain perfectly legal when they obviously cause harm. When used for their intended purpose, you will die earlier then normal and suffer health problems, yet it's perfectly legal.

this may sound silly, but just stay aware of food cravings and ask yourself if you're really hungry or if you just want food to make you feel better or to have something in your mouth. think about if you'd be eating that same thing if you were still smoking, stuff like that. since the weight gain is due to psychological things, if you make an effort to stay on top of it, it shoudlnt be as much of a problem. just avoid mindless comfort eating when you're having a nic fit.

and drinking lots of water is always a good idea. i mean, i dont do it, cause i love soda, but im fat and you dont want to be like me do you? no. so drink lots of water. you'll have something in your mouth, it will be good for you, and drinking lots of water in itself can help you lose/keep off weight because it keeps you feeling fuller. also, sometimes your body misinterprets dehydration as hunger. so drink that water. also, chewing gum would probably be a good idea.

I think nicotine is an appetite suppressant too. Let's see...

acc. wikipedia: "By reducing the appetite and raising the metabolism, some smokers may lose weight as a consequence."

I gotta say this

Two packs a day? Jesus fucking christ!!! That's horrifying

Anyway, here's some tips I found for quitting/oral fixation shit

Keep a Smoking Jar.

How much do you spend on smoking? I’ve seen prices of 8 bucks or more in some parts of the US. If you smoke a pack a day, that’s 50 bucks a week, 200 bucks a month. Take the money you would have spent on cigarettes and put in a jar. At the end of the month, go out and buy yourself something nice.

Note: If you slip up and smoke, detract that from your smoking jar!

Go Kojak.

Some people really and truly have an oral fixation. I am one of them. Part of the nightmare of quitting was constantly feeling like I needed something in my mouth. (And yeah, I hear you’re dirty little snickering, buddy!) Once I discovered lollipops, my stress was lessened by 75%. Worried about sugar? So go sugar free! There are some great lollipops out there, I still love them. Just stay away from the blue ones.. not sexy!

Make a deal with someone you respect/love.

I didn’t want to quit. The reason I did, was someone offered me a deal. They promised to quit something else if I quit smoking. I happened to really want them to keep their end of the bargain, so I viewed quitting smoking as a small price to pay.

So if you have someone you love constantly nagging at you to quit – offer them a trade. We all know someone who should be taking better care of themselves, or changing something in their life. For example, tell Dad you’ll quit smoking if he promises to follow that diabetic diet he keeps slacking off on. It works.

Take up a hobby that keeps your hands busy.

Knitting, painting, writing, guitar –You can’t smoke and play guitar at the same time. The idea is to keep them distracted and happy so they won’t feel like they should be lighting a smoke for you.

Chew/suck on ice chips

A good way to deal with that oral fixation – without gaining weight. Sucking on them helps ease the smoking reflex and chewing them helps get past the food cravings. Personally I don’t think you really crave food – you just want something in your mouth, and your brain figures that means food.

The 'suck dick to success!' plan sounds like the best option.

I can't explain the two packs a day thing, except for the lamest excuse in the book that I'm anxious, blablabla! Thankfully, my teeth aren't destroyed. If I keep it up they will be. But I have noticed that my face is all oily and breaks out at random (which never happened before smoking- I was blessed with perfect skin). I'd rather gain some weight than having a "smoker's face" by the time I reach my mid-life. Though quitting won't save it much as is. BOOHOO!

I can't even explain why I started in the first place. I've always been a nervous wreck, so.. Shit. Actually, I DO know why I started in the first place. When my ex, like, disappeared off the face of the earth (because of drugs) I would smell a shirt he had left behind... (It was my way of coping and having a good cry for myself- creepy I know, but whatever.) Eventually, his scent kinda wore off, and I needed a new means ('cause I thought he was gonna end up dead or something- stupid me for giving a rat's ass). And that's when I remembered his hands always smelled like Marlboros. Wow.

(^That sounds totally psycho.)

Ha. Thanks, Dandy. No, really.

the great thing about cigarettes is that there's absolutely nothing good about them.

cancer keeps you thin. my neighbour died just after xmas with throat cancer. she hadn't been able to eat much for a year. really attractive.

yeah, suck on the water bottle!

Blimey, 2 packs! At my 'peak', I couldn't have smoked that much if I tried.

What worked for me - and it worked brilliantly - was finding out I was pregnant. Haven't had one since the day I bought that Clearblue Easy from the chemist.

Of course, this method can be a bit expensive.
