It was given away for free with a Sunday newspaper in the UK...that's all I know about it....

Yeah, I heard about that.
I nearly tried to hunt down a newsstand that might have it, but then I forgot about it.
A nice boardmember is sending me the newspaper with the cd.

I haven't listened to it but most people are saying it's like his last few albums in that it's a mixed bag.

You can listen to whole album here http://www.music.msn.com/music/ListeningBooth. I like it, his "my guitar" song is cool, but for me nothing could capture the energy and funk of his 80's work.

For damn near 50 he still got plenty funk. He needs to re-group the Revolution.

I feel the same way and I'm sure others do too. Whenever I listen to his newer stuff I'm like "Yeah, it's good, but not as good as some of the older albums."

I haven't heard everything he's ever released, but it seems to me like his last nearly-great album was the love symbol album. It was really, really close. Like, an A- record, I think.
Has anything else been as good? I've heard probably half the stuff since then.

Some would say the Gold LP is a great one since the o-> Lp...its got one my fav tracks of his (NPG era) in "Eye hate U"
3121 man, thats a great LP too...really the first signs that Prince was returning to the style of music which made him great..."Black Sweat" could have easily been an 1980's track

I think that Musicologly more than hangs with his best 90s work, and is probably his best LP since the love symbol album. Some of it can even hang with his 80s catalog.

the opener to 3121 really had me thinking Prince was back, but as much as i like that album it didn't live up to the opening track imho. That said it is a good album

I heard the Gold Experience, like, once? I'll look for another copy.
3121 seemed fine (like Musicology), but he seems wrapped up in his comeback thing, so it seems workmanlike instead of really inspired. To me, anyway. I'm probably reading too much into the timing.
3121 is dirt cheap in the used bins these days, so I might snag it this weekend. Hardly ever see The Gold Experience, though.

I should listen to that more. I thought it was... fine, but didn't really set me off. But I have a copy, so I'll pop it in again this weekend and pay more attention.
Thanks, folks. (y)

On a completely unrelated note, the other day I managed to find the "Batman" soundtrack that Prince did. (y)

You know what? Try to look for it under the "Soundtracks" section. I never found the Batman album with all the rest of Prince's discography.
Out of a whim I decided to try the Soundtracks to see if it'd be stuffed there. Sure enough, IT WAS THERE! Hope that helps.

Let me know, guys. I usually see the Batman soundtrack (Prince's, not Elfman's)(well, heck, Elfman's, too)(hi) in the clearance bins for $2-3.
It's pretty weak, I think, but arguably worth $2-3.

it has it's moments
batdance (the vicki vale section of the song is FONKY!)
Electric chair
the future
lemon crush
trust
party man (i didn't like this song originally but it's really grown on me over the years, if it breaks when it bends you better not put it in, wise words!)
vicki waiting
scandalous
infact the only song i'd pass on is arms of orion, it's no SOTT, but it's still a good album

I've always heard good things bout it, especilly when compared to his Love/Sexxxy LP...mainly cause the soudntrack is funky and moody...but Droppin I check the soundtrack section, I always just find Elfman's Score to the movie

abcdefz....Mickill's wrong. Just bought a copy of Planet Earth and that CD, more then anything, hangs with Prince's 80's work. Now I will admit it is a more laid back CD, given the propotion of ballad/slow songs, but it is nothing that a CD such as Parade or Sign O' the Times didnt have. That being said the slow songs match alot of Prince's previous love songs and the funk "Chelsa Rogers" and "Lions of Judah" are personal favs. with "Future Baby Mam" and "Somewhere Here on Earth".
I don't have time to try and play critic but trust it is a really good album. Musicology just sounds too New Power Genration with "Cinnamon Girl" sounding like Love/Sexxxy to me compared to 3121 and this CD (more Revolution/Prince at his best). Still love "Call my Name" and "What Do U Want Me to Do?" though.

It does...really. And no need to correct my spelling on the title, I was just typing it like that since the title reminds me of Speakerboxxx/Love Below.

I like it, just I'm a fan of his more moody material. Also had some funky jams on the Batman soundtrack...which I happened to find (finally) just yesterday (the last copy).

no it doesn't, in way, shape or form. If you think this album can hang with dirty mind, controversy, 1999, purple rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT, the black album, even batman or graffiti bridge then you are.....man it doesn't matter what i think if that's your opinion good for you, each to their own. I personally think that album is good but for me it in no way compares with P's output in the 80's, the very idea makes my brain hurt.
and i wasn't correcting your spelling i just wondered what you meant by spelling it that way, i thought i was missing something and now i know i wasn't

Why doesn't it hang then? And when I say hang I don't mean it is greater then any of those CD's that you said (except maybe Graffiti Bridge), it is just his closet sounding album to that time. I would resepct your opinion and leave it to "to each it own" but the "makes my brain hurt" kind of makes me think that you think my opinion is way off, which it isn't. The fact that this album also features similar guitar riffs found on Purple Rain, horn arrangements as Sign O' the Times, and also the contributions of Wendy, Lisa, and Sheila E. make me wonder if your just saying that because you feel that his 80's stuff can't even be mentioned with his newer work, which it can. In comparison to his 80's work, this is the closest you will get, and it does hang with it.

it doesn't hang with it because it's nowhere near as good, and if you think planet earth is as good as any of the 80's albums then i indeed think your opinion is way off. It doesn't sound anything like his 80's output and it certainly doesn't compare in quality. The fact that in your opinion he's rehashing old ideas, guitar riffs and horn arrangements from albums over 20 years old suggests he himself is hankering to reproduce the magic he did in that decade, planet earth falls way short of that, WAY short. Is it a good album ? yes, does it compare to the 80's or two 70's albums, HELL NO! Do i think prince is still the best doing it, HELL YES! But i can accept the fact that he is past his best as a recording artist, as a live performer he is still amazing. All great artists peak and P managed to maintain his a lot longer than most. So i guess we'll have to agree to disagree

Well I said it hangs, it isnt better, but it is similar and given the typical "I like his older stuff better" statement associated with artist who have been in the game long, he is attempting to appease his audience, in doing this, he has made a good LP. It is thanks to his 8os work as the fondation that created this; thus, it hangs to me. HELL YES! It is a worthy installment to his catalog. So yea, thats your opinion even if it seems pretty hollow to me.

but it isn't similiar, i've listened to it three times straight today to try and see if i'm just being unreasonable (i certainly have no personal beefs with you outside of this discussion) but honestly i don't get your point. The only similiar thing i hear to his 80's work is the guitar effect used at the beginning of lion of juddah is the same one he used on purple rain.
the problem i have is you saying it can hang with the albums we've already discussed which to me means it's as good as. Those albums, from for you to lovesexy (his last "classic" imho) have earned their classic status amongst fans because between 29 and 18 years on they are still getting major play, are still being bought/ downloaded, still being discussed, they still have influence, still sound as good or even better than they did first time around. So when you say an album that you've owned for maybe a couple of weeks is as good as those classic albums, thats the point i disagree with you on, dig ? I've said all along it is a good album, Chelsea Rodgers is a BEAST of a song, but a classic album ? Ask me in 10/20 years if i'm still listening to it
so how is that hollow ?

I bought the album this week. Must say...it is a real disappointment. I'm surprised Prince actually put out this piece of shit! Do I need to listen to it a few more times before it sounds remotely good? I don't know.
