It has lyrics that sound like "sardines, and pork and beans" or something. I have no idea if they are the correct words, but that's what the chorus/hook sounds like.
It has a really cool two-note synth bassline.
Any ideas? I must get this track!

I don't know what the original is but the Beastie Boys start singing that chorus in the live version of The Maestro on the Root Down EP.

if the kid is right, then tis GO GO and not hip hop. If you can't find it let me know i have it. If you can find it try to get the version that has "the word" as the opener
(washington hip-hop/funk hybrid scene from the mid-early 80's, still going strong i believe. If you enjoy that you should also track down anything you can find by Trouble Funk)

I expected The Mix Up to resemble it (don't ask me why), I guess cause I thought Alfredo Ortiz would be clangin and bangin away in the background a bit more.

I would say no, but it's a grower. It really has a place, even if it doesn't grab you. I can only really be ambivalent about it, because I hated it at first, and listen to it pretty much daily.
Yeah, cop it.
