Bergman (http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/30/bergman.obit.ap/index.html)

Snyder (http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/TV/07/30/obit.snyder.ap/index.html)

Bergman is Bergman. The Seventh Seal and Scenes from a Marriage (preferably the TV version) are a pretty big deal to me. Other folks really dig Wild Strawberries, Fanny & Alexander, etc.

Tom Snyder... I wasn't quite awake enough to see much of what he was doing. I just remember him from late late late TV having on these bands I was either interested in (Elvis Costello) or vaguely curious about, and not sure if he quite knew what the hell he was doing having them on his show. He didn't seem to "get" rock or "speak" it or something, and yet... if he was booking them, he had awfully good/interesting taste.

Anyway. Bye, guys. Thanks for your work. (y)

i'm glad you started a thread about this... but i'm not sure about putting ingmar bergman in the same space as some tv show host.

i've only seen fanny & alexander (about 100 times tho). i was about to venture out to see the 7th seal as it's showing in cinemas here at the mo. strange!

Nice (?) coincidence, venus. I only got to see Seventh Seal on a screen once, and the print was pretty iffy. I'm sure yours will be in better shape -- Criterion cleaned up the original negative, if I remember right, so they've probably struck new prints.

Yeah -- Tom + Ingmar is pretty weird in a way, but there's a certain kinship. Snyder wasn't just some TV show host -- he was a smart, smart guy -- much much closer to Dick Cavett than Barbara Walters. Wouldn't surprise me to find them at dinner together, actually.

But they died within hours of each other, too, and I figured this thread would get zero replies anyway, so it seemed like an interesting pairing. No disrespect intended. (y)

It's a major thing over here, obviously. I've never seen a bergman film, not even fanny and alexander that runs every christmas. I probably will soon though.

...does the public there really love him? Just curious. I think we sometimes romanticize the actual public reception "foreign" film directors get in their home country.

Fanny & Alexander is really good.

Did you guys have the full version, and then that was cut down for U.S. release? Criterion has both available right now on a really nice DVD set.

I don't think "the public" love him. His private life has been covered pretty extensively being married five times and living on a small famous island in the sea.

I believe we got the long version, it's screened the day after christmas eve I think.

I kinda figured Ingmar Bergman died 35 years ago.
