1. How much old Beasties stuff got played? How much was TMU songs?

2. What was the proportional breakdown of people:
a)dressed really nicehttp://beastieboys.com/bbs/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=19
Beastie Boys Message Board - Post New Thread
b)dressed like wackos
c)dressed in normal street clothes (jeans and the like)

3. What was the overall atmosphere?

I'm confused as to what the whole gala event vs. regular concert thing is

this has become the most ridiculous argument of semantics, basically..

the only difference will be the instrumental setup and lack of participation by Mix Master Mike... he might contribute a bit during some jams, but overall it will be instrumental songs powered by drums, guitars, bass, and vocals...

they have played two or three songs from The Mix Up, two or three old instrumentals like Pow and Futterman's Rule, etc...

and the rest is going to be some classics as well as some hardcore tracks...

the concert crowd will more than likely be dressed in normal street clothes, I am guessing the Atlantic City and Boston Opera House might be a bit more dressed up, but overall, you are going to a Beastie Boys show and it will be a smaller capacity as far the audience is oncerned...

Hammerstein? Thoughts? Dressy, not dressy. It is a ballroom. In any case I don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. Prom dress?

if the idea of dressing up makes you uncomfortable, dont dress up...

if the idea excites you, go all out and have a ball, wear a prom dress...

sticking out like a sore thumb makes you unique (y)

in other words, do what you want

eh, i'm indecisive as hell. sometimes skip meals because i cant decide what to eat. i might get something special and semi weird for the event but not all out weird, like, something i can wear on other occasions. like a wacky shirt. i don't know. the idea of gallivanting around new york in a prom dress puts me off a bit. actually the idea of gallivanting around new york at all is frightening. i dont understand things like public transportation or unsweetened iced tea.

ultimately i guess it will come down to what my friend wants to do. i think she's pretty set on wearing a big poofy prom dress.

im glad to hear it's not all new Mix Up tracks.

if you are worried about getting around new york meet up with us at the central park concert, we are going to split cabs and ride the subway to the rest of the shows

I, unfortunately, will only be in town for the Hammerstein show. I'm driving up with a friend. I'm not sure exactly what will become of the car once we get to the city. I guess parking garages? I'm not sure of our exact plans yet, we don't actually have any. I think we're going to aim for getting there a few hours early to account for the inevitable getting lost. One of my primary main objectives is to eat at a White Castle while above the Mason-Dixon line.

I'm pretty excited. I've never really gone on a roadtrip, or to a concert, so I really have no idea how any of this stuff works. I'm not sure what our tickets mean or if it will be customary to sit in seats or stand up or anything. I figure I'll show up and things will sort themselves out.

i skip the dress to impress questions cause i donŽt like to impress.

a typical setlist for an gala event looks like this (cologne, june 23rd):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/beastie_boys/629149884/in/set-72157600488784531/

all songs performed with instruments. expect to see nearly 2 hours of PURE beastie boys.

brooklyndust, i tell you what .... at hammerstein youŽll might see the concert of your life. i have seen many different bands in the past 20 years and until recently i thought having already seen the best gigs in my lifetime. i was wrong. i now consider the gala event back in june (cologne/germany) as the greatest performance ever, incredible good sound quality, fabolous setlist, nice crowd and amazing herbs plus german beer.

second best gig was HELMET june 2005 in utrecht (netherlands), very small venue.

I decided to dress up for AC. Nothing too fancy, but I did wear a dress. I saw a lot of people in dresses and suits, most of them were the ones sitting. People standing on the floor were generally not dressed to impress, save for a few. I was definitely in the minority, dressing up fancy-like, but there were enough people who did dress up that we didn't stand out too bad. I really liked that some people went all out in tuxedos and prom dresses.

It was a pretty laid-back atmosphere. People were dancing, but nobody went too crazy until they played Sabotage, and a couple of the hardcore songs. The crowd was really awesome, except for a few assholes shouting comments.

Probably the best possible mix of songs they could've done. A couple songs from TMU, a lot of Ill Communication and CYH thrown in.

I was pretty disturbed by the number of people I heard saying "what the hell was that?" and "what a disappointment" when I left. Probably the same people who were standing next to me shouting "Brass Monkey!" the whole time. I don't think they were aware that the Beastie Boys made anything past LtI, so I only felt sorry for them that they didn't get to appreciate what an amazing show it was.

I felt for the $100 ticket price, they could have played a little longer than an hour and a half. I also left wondering...what was so special about this gala event compared to all the other ones? The news section on the website mentioned that this would be different than all the other gala's but didn't mention why. Did I miss something?

Overall it was a cool show but I enjoyed Philly more I think.

Thanks everyone for the info. I'm even more excited about this whole thing now that I'm not concerned about dressing the right way (I still havn't decided what to do about it, but I'm not worried), and to hear everyone say that it's been great and that theres a lot of CYH and ill communication in there.

*squeal* excitement!

I found this in an old trunk in my basement:

What To Wear to a Gala Event: A Breakdown.

Option 1: Dress like you are going out somewhere that is NOT a baseball game AND is NOT your mom's basement. (Estimated total: 70-85%)

Option 2: Show up decked out all vintage and shit:

Sub-Group A: Fabulous people who know what they're doing, who effortlessly roll out of bed and into sunday brunch in 1963 Givenchy. (Estimated total: 5-7%)

Sub-Group B: People essentially "in costume." These are not-so-distant cousins of the people who dress up like wizards in line for Borders or run the Marathon dressed as a cow, not that there's anything wrong with that. These are the people who keep in interesting, especially in line for beer and/or when psychotropic drugs kick in. We need you. (Estimated total: 1-2%)

Option 3: Dress like you are going out somewhere that IS a baseball game OR IS your mom's basement. This group encompasses smug bike messengers, innocent fucks who were handed last-minute tickets, guys who wear khaki pants to funerals, and the occasional Hells Angel. (This being America, easily 20-35% of the crowd)

The Breakdown: Does either category of "Option 2" fit who you "are"?
- Yes? Go forth.
- No? Return to Option 1.*
- Not reading this? Easy. Option 3.

*This is me. I am boring.

I'm also going for Option 1. Option 2 subgroup A would be fun if I were more hip.

Given my Red Sox and ticket buying addictions...I am frequently going dressed for a baseball game to a baseball game so dressing for he Opera House will be a nice change of pace.

Ok but how was that controversial as the web site said? Tons of artists play the Borgata.

so i want to wear a suit, because truthfully i kind of like them. i feel cool in a suit. but it's not exactly a showy suit, there's nothing really flashy or interesting about it, it's just a suit, the kind you'd wear to work. it looks nice and all, but it is kind of a lawyer suit. just black, really. would that be inappropriate at all?

what if i got a shiny tie?

and i know the answer's gonna be "do whatever you want" but what i want is to not have people laughing at me when i've got my back turned because i'm self conscious

I'm just going to wear a dress...nothing too fancy. I wore it to a wedding dress rehearsal. I'm going to look like a fool anyhow with a big splint on my arm!!

thats hilarious

show was advertised as a sartorially splendiferous evening, with the words "Dress to Impress" causing considerable "what-to-wear?" anxiety on the band's Internet message boards.

yeah, i laughed. when you think about it though, it makes us sound kinda dorky. i know whenever i read news stories that have anything to do with people who are fake internet friends or post on bbs's, I'm like "wow what losers"

i guess i'm just in denial

Tuxes to jeans was the dress code at the Boston Opera House show tonight. As usually, the Beasties rocked the house. They played a few songs off the new album, old punk stuff, Egg Raid, Jimmy James, most of their instrumental stuff and Sure Shot, Sabotage. It was fun to celebrate Adam's 43rd, they had a cake and everyone sang.. a good time.

I just got back from the nyc press conference in the Meatpacking district and am now looking froward to the Hammerstein show even more than I already was. That was definitely the most enjoyable pc I've ever been to. Mike D dispelled rumors once and for all that he was related to Neil "The Jewish Elvis" Diamond or Dustin "Screech" Diamond. Although he admitted to being intrigued by the existence of the Screech sex tape.
