Yeah, a Fed Ex driver was trapped. I think it was out west. Maybe Arizona. The photos of the Minneapolis bridge collapse are crazy.

Lara was on said bridge like five minutes prior to collapse...which is really fucking with my head right now :(

I cant even fathom what impact this will have on this city. Interstate 35 is such a huge path in and out of the city...and it will impact traffic in so many ways.

Did they say why it happened? Was it poor construction?

they were actually doing construction on the bridge over the weekend. Nothing structural, according to the news. They had the bridge down to one lane when it happened...I guess 50-100 cars fell in. Had it been two lanes at 5 pm rather than 6 it would have been 10 times worse.

according to the Minn Dept of Transportation, over 100,000 cars travel the bridge daily...and its really the only north to south route out of the city without major detours.

its really fucking surreal. Theres a dusty atmosphere outside...and we're about 2 miles away at least.

JESUS! that's scary...

When I saw it on the news I was hoping our Minneapolis BBMB peeps were ok.

I guess Documad needs to post here so we can stop worrying.

You're very sweet to be concerned.

I was at the airport in Seattle preparing to fly home, so I was huddled 'round the CNN with other Minnesotans at the gate. That was a very odd way to experience hometown news.

Despite calls from a few friends warning me about the bridge, as well as seeing CNN and listening to the radio coverage on the way home, I was on autopilot and headed for the bridge an hour ago when I was driving home. I can't imagine life without that bridge.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, I don't know anyone in MN except the board peeps so you guys were the first people I thought of.

I am glad you are all safe. Such a horrible tragedy, it must have been so scary for those who were on it when it happened. And so horrible for the families of those who are still missing.

Minnesota hasn't had a democratic governor in 17 years.

its really quite odd how surreal the whole thing is. Like watching all this stuff on the news it never really sunk in that its all happening 2 miles away until we drove down Washington Ave, which is about 1/4 mile south of where the bridge is. You see flood lights and crowds of people...but you cant really tell that the bridge is gone.

Interstate 94 and Interstate 35 separate, and when 35W heads due north the turn is completely blocked off by orange signs, flashing lights, and police cars. Its so weird looking down the ordinarily packed stretch of road and seeing it completely vacant.

I used to live about 1 mile north of that bridge...and I would not even be able to give you an estimated count of the number of times Ive crossed it. Like its been reported on the news...its a major section of freeway that has constant traffic, and the official detour is pretty far off the beaten path.

Like documad mentioned...I am sure there will probably be many times I intend to head north on 35 and just blank out that I cant.

Laura Bush came today and W is coming tomorrow. I think it's absolutely rotten. We have cops and rescue workers working overtime on the recovery effort, and on trying to reroute traffic, and they have to be pulled away from that to protect the president so that he can have a photo op. This isn't Katrina. The full impact of this one bridge collapsing can be experienced by aerial photos. A map could explain that when the city loses one of two interstates that serve the city we need to replace the fucking bridge ASAP and reroute the interstate in the meantime. I doubt that W is going to help with any of that. We need federal $$$. End of story.

In other news, I was a gawker and walked down as close as I could to see it for myself tonight. :o
