I wonder if that is where the saying "great scott!" comes from. you now how people make up words that sounds like blasphemies when they actually care about not using the lords name in vain and all that.

I don't think so. as I've never heard anyone say gross Gott, I'm going to assume the utterance you're referring to is the German greeting, gruss Gott. used mainly in conservative and very Christian Bavaria, the meaning is literally greet god. Gross Gott would only really be used when talking about a large god.

Grüß Gott, then, I thought was not a greeting, but rather a sort of explicative, like "Jesus H. Fucking Christ!" or "great Scott!"
