The Insider - saw this years ago and forgot how good it was. Crowe is excellent in this. Pacino shouts a lot.

The Public Enemy (1931) - Interesting to say the least. I did enjoy it, but I can't really get into authentically old movies for some reason... it's not the black and white thing, it's not the lack of special effects, I think I'm too hung up on how crappy the sets were back then or something.
That and how people talked... I just get too distracted with stupid shit. Uncultured swine am I.

I found myself bored stiff with the whole movie. I kept walking away and finding something else to do while it was on. and It's not that I don't adore westerns.
I found it played out like a bad tv western show. Or a tv show where the dialogue is far too polished. Im talking lonesome dove crossed with gilmore girls or something. blargh.
Ed Harris really bugged me in this movie too. I can't put my finger on why.
I did enjoy Viggo though.
and renee looked like she had been punched in the face 50 times and they were trying to poorly cover the bruises with excessive stage makeup.

Allison: I'm sorry. I was so alone, and Bragg... Well, Ring protected me and so did his brother.
Virgil: You fuck Mackie, too?
Allison: No. It was Ring. He was in charge. I just did what I had to do.
Virgil: Everett...Ring kills me, do you think she'll go off with him?
Everett: I think Allie needs to be with a man.
Allison: You're a bastard! Don't listen to him. He tried to put his hands on me when I showed him our house.
Everett: No, Virgil. I did not.
Virgil: No, Allie. Everett didn't do that.
Allison: You believe him over me?

brother outsider: the life of bayard rustin.
it's a documentary about, er, bayard rustin - for those who don't know, he was one of martin luther king jnr's key advisors and the organiser of the 1963 march on washington. he was a gay black man and a total unsung hero. what a legend. i knew nothing about him before. it's a great documentary and has some really interesting footage of him debating with malcolm x etc.. rarely seen in the UK (doesn't have a distributor) so pleased i got the chance to see it.
Somers Town.
Another classic by Shane Meadows.
I spent the entire film sat in (worried) anticipation for his almost trademarked turn of mood. The film was pretty lighthearted and I really wanted it to carry on in the same manner. I actually found myself spending the entire film wishing well for the two main roles, especially in a tense scene containing a father and a wrecked house. I'll say no more.
Brilliant.
Go and watch it now.

I watched “RockNRolla” this weekend…it just didn’t really work, now did it?...the sub plot with Ludacris and Jeremy Piven was pointless…the plots failed to weave effectively as with “Lock.S.T.S.B” or “Snatch”…the hit on the Russian’s and the resulting melee/foot chase was good fun though…I do wonder what the painting was as well and how it ended up “costing a Russian an arm and a leg”…is Guy just fooling about a sequel at the end there?...

best few hours i've spent in one place in a while. especially after a really shitty day.
i've seen badlands before, great as usual, but it was the first time i've seen killer of sheep. it's always mentioned as being an american classic, albeit a largely forgotten one (wasn't widely distributed as burnett had a problem with the music rights.. the film was restored by ucla in 2007) (curiously enough a lot of the money came from steven soderbergh, fact fans) and rightly so. amazing amazing amazing amazing. definitely gonna check out the burnett box set.

It was awful. I hate Kevin Smith, and didn't know it was his project until I rented it. Judd Apatow has got to be annoyed that Kevin Smith stole all his people. I'm sure at least some people rented this movie becuase of what Apatow did for the cast in prior projects, not because of anything Kevin Smith ever did. God, I can't stand Kevin Smith. Working with Seth Rogan must be annoying, having to listen to that laugh all the time.
I only liked Craig Robinson, and Justin Long wasn't bad for his approximate minute and a half of screentime.

I liked a History of Violence, too! I thought it was so shocking and yet believable how suddenly the movie changed and he became this other person - or I guess roused this other person who had been sleeping inside him. I thought it was a good story, too. I pretty much expected it to be good, and was expecting to like Viggo in it, but I was more surprisingly impressed with William Hurt's character. His accent was crazy! The only part of that movie I didn't like was the odd sex scene on the stairs. I think it added something to the movie, it was just uncomfortable to watch, and probably literally uncomfortable too.

I heard Mike Diamond mentioning this during a Quasar/Sac-town bootleg circa '96. I thought it was just a funny phrase that he made up.

almost completely without subtlety or nuance. mass produced nonsense for those who need their history in fairytale form. on the plus side, it does have one of the most ridiculous cinematic moments of the last decade as Cruise turns and gives a rather impassioned Hitler salute with his right stump.

my main problem with it is that the actual story is something very complex, with enough underlying themes and ambiguities to fuel three films let alone one. Valkyrie however, manages to butcher all of this potential into a standard Hollywood action/thriller.
for instance, motivation for the conspiracy was and is an extremely contentious issue, but the film has Cruise literally spell it out in the first fifteen lines. from then on all the slow mo's, Wagner, and Hitler salutes just exacerbated things.
i think bryan singer had to dish it out in cruise's first fifteen lines for the general movie going audience. he's a good director with a solid body of work who isn't your standard director of generic films, and when i saw it i realized he was just merely scratching the surface of the entire plot. but still, i think he did a good job of conveying that not every german was a nazi and believed in the greater good of humanity.

Awful, horrible, wow, just really bad movie. And I didn't expect much, I will willing to give it a little latitude.
How did they manage to make the gorgeous Kat Dennings look so hideous? She looks worse when she's supposed to look "sexy". I feel bad for her, you could tell she didn't know what she had gotten herself into and was just trying to get through unscathed.
But Anna Faris and Emma Stone really have some comic abilities. Seriously.
Colin Hanks as Anna Faris's love interest has to be the worst casting ever. He just looks goofy and not in a cute-goofy way. Just in a goofy-goofy way. No chemistry, they look completely mismatched on camera. Was anyone watching the dailies?

it's on! we can cook too. it'd be awesome.
i saw let the right one in again last night. and little children. again. still great.
i saw a trailer for in the loop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQrqMkCuHqA&feature=related) beforehand and it was lololol.. i missed the press show but i'll see it when it comes out (this friday). lots of swearing in a scottish accent. brilliant.
Let the right one in - Not half as good as I expected. Don't believe the hype.
Burn After Reading - Fell asleep during it. It had its moments but few and far between for me.

from saturday-monday i was watching films at a screening day held for independent cinemas/film societies etc. i went for work. we attend to watch the films and decide if we're going to book them into our cinemas.. normally we see them at festivals before the screening days but sometimes not. so. here are the films i saw. sitting in a cinema watching three/four films a day is more exhausting than you might think. but i'm not complaining! i get paid!
gigantic 3.5/5
isn't paul dano just adorable? zooey deschanel, too, but everyone knows that. i enjoyed this, but i had just arrived in london on the 0630 train and was a bit dazed and confused. i didn't understand why he had a hitman on his ass. i didn't really understand why the hell he wanted to adopt a chinese baby. i also didn't understand why happy was so distraught - her mistakes weren't anything she couldn't make up for. hrm. but whatevs. john goodman was good value, too.
sugar 2/5
this is the new film from the writing-directing team behind half nelson. an amateur baseball player from the dominican republic goes to that states to play pro baseball, AMERICAN DREAM, rediscovering his love of baseball only after he left the system yadda yadda yadda. bah. i've seen this movie a hundred times, and even if british people gave two hoots about baseball (i watched it with a colleague who is from indiana and she enjoyed it much more) the movie without the sport is poor. the distributors were trying to sell it as "as far apart from a mainstream American sport film as it is possible to get" but.. haha. they are bullshitting.
is anybody there? 3/5
that new film with michael caine and the kid from son of rambow. he lives in an old peoples' home run by his parents and is obsessed with ghosts. michael caine is going senile. a friendship forms. blah blah. it was actually quite cute. harmless fluff, set in the 80s, with a couple of laughs. not going to change the world but worth a look in.
public enemy number one (parts 1 and 2) 3/5
this is a new french film starring vincent cassel as FRANCE'S MOST NOTORIOUS GANGSTER jacques mesrine. i think when they release it it'll have a different title because isn't the new michael mann gangster film with johnny depp similarly titled? anyhiz.
part 1 is significantly better. it's slick as fuck. quite violent. chic and glossy. vincent cassel is superb but the head of programme here really didn't like it. his main criticism was that it was like 4 hours of basically the french going "hey, we can do americanized Hollywood-style films, too!" he walked out during a car chase in the Arizona desert where he thought it was getting a bit over the top. eh, i get his criticism, but i don't think there's anything WRONG with the french being "americanized". i think his criticism was that they were doing american.. badly. not american per se.
anyway anyway anyway, i thought it was nicely done and worth a look in. but holy crapola - he escaped from prison HOW MANY TIMES? the 60s/70s were the best time to be a criminal in france/quebec, i'm guessing. christ. after the third time i was like  oh, and i think i may love mathieu almeric, even though he does look a bit like satan.
soul power 5/5
this is a documentary made about zaire '74, the 3-day music fest in kinshasa they held to coincide with rumble in the jungle. it's all original footage, no talking heads going "aahh remember when ali put friggin 6 spoonfuls of sugar in his tea?" (really).. james brown, b.b. king, bill withers, the spinners and lots of african acts of the time too. the music is amazing and it's worth it for the jam session on the plane over alone. now THAT was when commercial flying was sexy. they were high as hell, haha. anyway, i thought it was an amazing documentary and i was pleased it didn't have any contemporary interruptions.. well worth a look. check out the trailer here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJ-r_kuYMlE). it should be out in july.
last chance harvey 1/5
this was a last minute addition and i was sat there thinking, why on earth are they showing us this film when it's exactly the opposite sort of film we'd show in our cinemas? bah. i walked out because it was a waste of my time, so i feel bad writing it off already, but eh. dustin hoffman/emma thompson are two losers in love, find each other, yadda yadda.. blah blah. zzz.
fugitive pieces 2/5
i feel like i have watched this movie a hundred times before. it tells the story of a kid who is HAUNTED by his experiences during WWII. he is orphaned as a child in poland and then saved by a compassionate greek archaeologist (oh, isn't that always the case?!) he grows up in canada and writes a book about struggling to come to terms with his experiences. and stuff. and women. some understand him, some don't. he writes, he teaches, he's finding beauty in the present and closing this TRAUMATIC CHAPTER in his life. truly unexceptional.
katyn 3/5
this is the new film from some seminal polish director in his 80s. about the massacre of 15000 polish officers in the forest of katyn in 1940 by the soviets. i only saw half (went to see ms peachy for lunch!) but we showed a preview of it at my workplace last night and it was very popular. and stuff. god, after the third film you sort of lose your spark describing things.
rudo y cursi 4/5
gael garcia bernal and diego luna, my two future husbands, are two brothers who have to compete on rival mexican football teams.. cue lots of cahoots with fame, riches, fast cars, loose women, and it all coming crashing down again. completely adorable, and gael garcia bernal is hilarious - his character really wants to be a singer and he makes a butt-clenchingly embarrassing music video where he plays an accordion while wearing a cowboy hat and dodgy diamante studded jacket. i think diego luna may be the only man with a moustache i have found attractive.
anything for her/pour elle 2.5/5
this is a french film with diane kruger and vincent lindon. what is it with french vincents? anywhogivesafuckhoo, poor diane gets sent to the slammer for a murder she hasn't committed, and her husband plots to get her pretty ass out. cue the usual japes when you try to bust someone out of prison. i guess it's alright for a generic thriller. it's tense at times, and diane kruger is rarely on the screen so you don't have to look at her hamming it up too much. not the sort of film i would, er, pay money to see but harmless fluff nonetheless.

Observe and Report
It's very strange, and at times very dark. But it's pretty funny. It really didn't know what kind of film it was as it went from Apatow style comedy, to much stranger stuff.
Still, entertaining enough.

Zombie Strippers
It was surprising. I was really surprised at how good the creature effects were. I was surprised that it was funnier than I expected it to be, even though I expected it to be a good-because-it's-bad movie. And oddly, I was surprised that it actually was about zombie strippers. I thought the title was just something to be catchy but the strippers became zombies and then they kept being strippers; zombie strippers.
TAL knows what I'm talking about.

ha, I loved Zombie Strippers. Saw it twice in the theater :o it's so ridiculous.
I just rented Miracle at St. Anna. It had good intentions, but the pacing was a bit slow and it border lined on cheese/overacting and had moments of unnecessary dialogue to explain things.
Eh. 2.5/5 I suppose.

this was (shamefully, seeing as i've seen the rest of powell and pressburger's films) the first time i've seen this film and oh man, it's fantastic.
it was on at work being discussed from a neurological perspective for some curious festival that's on atm. so ahead of its time it's ridiculous.
yay for technicolor. and jack cardiff.
