'The Kingdom' I like the look of it (v.much like 3 Kings which I also enjoyed). Thought it was a bit simple in terms of the political/religious slant but quite entertaining. Chris Cooper rocked as normal.

star trek was awesome. hats off to j.j. abrams for doing a great job rebooting the franchise. bones and nero were definitely the stand-outs for me, excellent performances from urban and bana.

i also thought wolverine was really good as well. i don't know what the critics are talking about, as it really made you forget all about x-men 3.

and i don't get the hate over wanted. i liked it, it was entertaining and funny, an above average popcorn flick.

Star Trek was incredible. As a fan since birth, I was skeptical going in. However Leonard Nimoy still has it, it remained very faithful to the ST canon, and threw in plenty of awesome references to other Trek series for us hardcore fans.

Had a killer opening weekend commercially also.

Oh for sure, I've been repping it on here for a while now. One of my fave scenes in any film is this bit:

Sonny: Hey man, how you doin'? Rich...
[offers handshake]
Sonny: [Richard refuses handshake]
Sonny: You ok?
Richard: Mmh
[nods head]
Sonny: You know the lads had this ridiculous idea th...
Richard: [Richard interrupts him before he can finish off the sentence] Yeah, it was me.
Sonny: Oh it was? Thought so. What are you up to?
Richard: Moochin' about.
Sonny: Moochin' about? In my house?
Richard: Mmh
Sonny: Do you always paint men? Like women?... What are you doin' lad?
Richard: That's my concern.
Sonny: Not with being in my house. Where are you staying?
Richard: Motson's farm. Gonna come see me are ya?
Sonny: Maybe I will. You're not afraid of me are ya?
[Richard smiles & shakes head implying he isn't afraid]
Tuff: Why doesn't he just chin him?
Big Al: He's weighing him up, he's weighing him up, shut up.
Sonny: You're making me very nervous, Richard.
Richard: Well you should be. If I were you, i'd get in that fuckin' car and i'd get out of here man. I'd gather them goonies and get whatever you've got comin' mate... 'cause i'm gonna fucking hit you all.
Sonny: I don't like being threatened, Rich'.
Richard: I'm not threatening you mate. It's beyond fucking words. I watched over you when you were asleep and I looked at your fucking neck and I was that far away from slicing it.
Richard: [Richard opens up his hand right hand and points towards his palm] You're fucking there mate!
[Richard clenches his hand]
Richard: So get in that car... and FUCK OFF!
Richard: You get to me first!
Sonny: I just might.

Wathced Revenge of the Fallen at the IMAX.

I have no idea what the plot was, it really made no sense.

I think the only reason they had the airplane jump is so the vice president? could say, "I don't know why we have to jump out of a pefectly good airplane" which is an old and tired term.

The special effects were great but same as the first one, there was too much going on. When they are fighting each other you can't tell who is doing what.

Things I didn't understand is how as a robot when they weren't involved in combat, they're scratched up and dirty and when they transform into a car, they're perfectly clean and spotless.

The movie sucked. They tried too hard to be funny but it blew. I don't think I'll watch the third one if they make it.

antichrist 2/5

mmhm. it's a hard film to explain. i mean, you couldn't say, 'come and watch this film and be entertained/amused/moved/inspired'. it's not like that. i've heard it described as more an event. some people are saying it is 'important for the history of cinema' but i don't think so. when i came out of the screening i didn't really know what to think, but now it's been a few days i like it more than i first did.

it's not genius but neither is it the MOST DISGUSTING FILM EVER as the daily mail keeps on asserting. i knew all the gory/sexual bits were coming (spoiler-but-not-really: for those not in the know it features a woman cutting off her clitoris with a pair of rusty scissors, testicle bashing, passed-out man being manually stimulated to ejaculate blood after said testicle basing, slow motion close up penetration) so perhaps their impact was a bit diluted.. well, as diluted as things that harsh can be.

lars von trier tries so achingly hard to be a provocateur. he acts like a gobby, arrogant teen. antichrist might as well be his middle finger. i don't know. it's gorgeous, it looks beautiful, and the actors do admirably well and give brave performances despite a clunky script (translated into english, and he wrote it when he was depressed - no surprise there) but at the end of the day it's just a bit, well.. dull in between those scenes that look, frankly, as if they could belong in saw or any other standard horror flick.

the most upsetting part of the film is not so much the violence and sex, but the grief. it's more an 'extended grief nightmare' than anything else. variety called it a big fart art film fart. ouch. anyway, it's big and bold but ultimately just a little bit ridiculous. i haven't watched a film that has divided so many people in the audience as this film did in years.

oh and the misogyny.. man, don't get me started. eh.

last movie i saw was "harry potter and the half-blood prince" the day it came out, and it was wayyy better than i thought it would be!! the actor who plays dumbledore was really good in this one...and i thought the whole thing with the boys and girls hooking up and whatever would bother me, but it didn't, although it was pretty silly sometimes. those moments made me laugh, along with other silly moments in the film. but the ending definitely stuck with me, too. overall, very well done. afterwards, my friend told me she cried when...you know!!! i was in kind of a weird place - i've read the comic book 1.5 times, and that was a while ago, so i was kind of in a place where a lot of the scenes were very familiar (the director was very faithful, at times), and some of them weren't, and i kind of spent a lot of time wondering if things were different because they were new, or if it was just that i wasn't remembering them, and i kind of spent most of the movie doing that rather than properly enjoying it and i feel like i didn't get as much out of it as i should have

that said, a few comments

the casting was mostly dead on - i really liked night owl, and i think rorschach's appearance was perfect. laurie jupiter and modern-day grizzled comedian looked just right, too, but i didn't care for rorschach's voice. it sounded too much like batman in the dark knight, i pictured him as more of a monotone sociopath - maybe something like dexter, but with less inflection. i got used to it, though. i also didn't really care for ozymandias at all. what was that accent? was ozymandias supposed to even have an accent? he didn't really work for me, i'm afraid. dr. manhattan's voice wasn't quite what i was expecting either, i feel like it should have been a little bassier. i mean...look at him. that guy has a deep voice, surely. he sounded like peter parker.

and at first i thought the ending was SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER I'M ABOUT TO RUIN THE ENDING very silly, but then i sat down and thought about it - if you switched the ending of the comic book with the ending of the movie, and the comic book ended with dr. manhattan being set up as the scapegoat for destroying the world, and the movie ended with crazy vagina alien out of nowhere destroying the world, i'd have thought it was about 100x sillier so i dunno. changing the ending was kind of a wierd thing to do, considering how strictly they'd generally stuck to the book, but then again, the movie was already approaching 3 hours long and setting up the vagina alien would have taken at least another 15 minutes so ehh i'll give them a pass.

I'M DONE SPOILING THE ENDING.

my ultimate review is "good, not great". it's no sin city

Bob

great! a really clever premise, and the film itself is a joy to watch. the first act is very tense in the sense that you have this foreboding feeling that something is about to go wrong, but you don't know what it is or when or how it's going to happen. i'm glad i avoided spoilers (such as the one below) because the fact that i didn't know what was going to happen made it all the better when it did happen. then the rest is just a joy to watch. and the thing at the ending where SPOILER SPOILER I'M ABOUT TO RUIN THE ENDING TO ANOTHER MOVIE PLEASE DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ITyou see alien wikus making the flower out of tinfoil, and then crushing the edge of it, in the same way that his wife accidentally sat on the paper mache bowl that he made for her and crushed the edge, i dunno...a little tear, right *here*...i'm pointing at my eye

i also liked how, with maybe one exception, not one single character was completely likable. everyone was flawed in some obvious way, especially the main character.

good stuff, good stuff, go see it

I really liked it. A tad too long, but over all pretty good.

Antichrist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870984/): 5/5

Conceptually:

A wonderful re-envisioning of some the major themes contained within
Milton's Paradise Lost. Film would be of interest to English literature scholars specialising in John Milton and/or William Blake.

Cinematography:

Staggeringly beautiful images. Surely of interest to visually oriented viewers.

Importance for film history:

There are several firsts in this film which make it of interest to film historians.

Themes of social and moral importance

Issues related to hubris and redemption should have forced viewers to re-consider their moral judgments (especially knee jerk attitudes of what constitutes right and wrong).

Yeah, finally got around to this one. Heartbreaking but eyeopening and worth the watch. I want the book of their photographs sooooo bad. There are some fantastic shots in there.

Curse Of The Golden Flower aka Man cheng jin dai huang jin jia (2006) - 6/10

It has one of those plots where you think something really extraordinary is about to happen, and then it never does. There are battles that seemingly involve half the population of China at the time, and endless amounts cleavage occurring in every scene, but it was still kind of a dud. I expected more from Zhang Yimou.

Surfer, Dude (2008) 1.5/10

Wow! I highly recommend this film to all!

No, there was plenty.

It was just all BANG! BOOBS! and then BAM! BOOBS! and then WHAMMO! BOOBS!, KERPLOW! BOOBS! and so on.

They just came out of nowhere like two people are talking and then cut to BOOBS! then resume conversation. This was in no way as awesome as I'm making it sound, btw.

I watched The Other Boelyn Girl this weekend. It didn't get much love here from what I remember but I thought Scarlett and Natalie gave fucking great performances. Seriously, NP really created a character in voice, body, inflection. Even her accent seemed passable to my untrained ear.

The weakest link by far was Eric Bana. Bland, unconvincing, and super uneven. It was like he just built it scene by scene and had no overarching throughline to his performance.

JOHN LANDIS YOU CUNT!

I just watched 'An American Werewolf In London' on the new 'Special Edition' DVD and I know the movie back to front but the CUNT John Landis had cut out bits that I feel are vital to the film

LANDIS YOU CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNT!

If it was NOT Landis' fault for these cuts then whoever it was is a big smelly CUUUUUUUUUUUUUNT!

Yeah, that really was the only redeeming part of the movie.

Seriously, the shot where he's holding the "dead" body of his girl and he looks up at the sky and screams "NOOOOOO!"

The shot where he's walking away in slow mo while the helicopter burns in the background.

The bits of really cringeworthy dialogue "I'm the only one who kills you".

Wow. Bryan Singer how I miss ye.

Though I think old Hugh deserves an oscar for his eyebrow work in this role. Maybe best special effects or something.
