Went and saw Avatar finally. 3D was sweet. Jason Bateman would have been perfect for the lead, and the story had mad gay shit in it, but it was quite an impressive experience overall.

Valkyrie. Though it was a bit odd how Cruise's character was so quickly identified as someone who wanted to kill Hitler. He can't have been very discreet.

Defiance. Another war film. Loved it. Love Daniel Craig. Even thought Liev Schrieber did a good job. I still find him a bit creepy though

i watched both 'shooter' and 'the wrestler' over the weekend.

shooter was alright. typical thriller with a lot of people getting shot in the head. interesting plot though.

the wrester was solid. i can see why it was nominated (won?) awards and such. really enjoyed it, and i have been gaining more of an appreciation for films that end sort of ambiguously like this did.

The Young Victoria
utterly grand. I like almost all romanctical stories set in the 19th century, but this one was especially fun to watch.

The Fantastic Mr Fox
Fantastic! So cussing good!

The Informant!
I only made it through half and haven't gone back to finish it yet. I found Matt Damon's character too annoying to get into it really, I guess that was the point. Good job Mr. Damon.

A Serious Man
Very well done. Depressing but in a respectable way.

Whip it!
Totally passed the time and I confess I went and downloaded the official soundtrack afterwards.

The Road
very good adaptation from the book. Viggo was perfect.

The Shop Around the Corner (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033045/)
Jimmy Stewart is hot.

Paths of Glory
Could perhaps now be my favorite Kubrick film. Timothy Carey is a beast!

Picnic at Hanging Rock (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073540/)
Fucked up. I don't enjoy most "serious" australian cinema (except for more recent stuff). It is just always trying to hard to be deep and symbolic and mystical and then only succeeds in being confusing. This movie pissed me off from start to finish.

Bright Star
Absolutely divine. One of the most perfect love stories I've ever viewed on film.

The Messenger
I only watched half of this one too, but I need to go back and finish it because it was actually quite good. Ben foster and Woody are really good in it

Prayers for Bobby
cry-fest.

Surrogates
action movie...

Wasn't sure how to single out a single sentence from a post, but PATHS OF GLORY is an amazing film. Critics claim it is the first anti-war film ever made. Kind of surprised to see it pop up in this thread. Kubrick is a GOD.

And FANTASTIC MR. FOX is a masterpiece.

Last film I watched was 500 Days of Summer... Could not get into that! Well done visually, but drew no emotion. Hee-haw?

I saw Adventureland a couple of weeks ago and ended up downloading a bunch of songs. The soundtrack had a bigger impact than the movie, though the lead actor is quite likeable. (I haven't seen Whip It). I loved the Informant. I loved that it's a small movie and I thought Matt Damon was fantastic in it. I also enjoyed all the little cameos by famous people and for once didn't find them distracting. My sister gets points for spotting Dick Smothers as the judge--I missed that.

I adore Jimmy Stewart even though I never liked that movie. Have you seen You Can't Take it With You? I assume you've seen Philadelphia Story. He's adorable in those movies.

And I went through a period years ago where I saw all those Australian movies that were supposed to be classics. I found most of them to be interesting, which is usually good enough for me. But back when I was seeing those movies, they were much harder to find -- I'd have to wait till they came to a revival house because most of them weren't at the local video store on VHS. I waited years to see Picnic at Hanging Rock and dragged my friend to it. I remember liking it, but I remember that my friend hated it and was furious with me.

Yes. Then the pacing was so slow and it couldn't decide if it wanted to be cute and indie or a strong comedy so it ended up failing miserably at both.

I wanted to fall asleep so I literally fast forwarded through everything that wasn't the actual derby scenes.

hang on, how can it be one of your favourite films if it sends you to sleep and how have you never woke up and watched the end of it if you liked it so much? Yeah it's a puzzle aint it! It's got to be testament to a film when i can love it but never caught the very ending....kill bill i've seen plenty, kill bill 2 i just never made to the final scene, but i knew that she would kill him. Two kids, work, whatever and i've only watched it when it's on t.v which is always pretty late and by then i'm fucked.

I love the whole package with these films, the characters, the background story bits, the music, those last ten minutes weren't all that necessary somehow, but i'm glad i finally saw it. There's not many films could do that.

"Love in the Time of Cholera" it actually looked very nice but theres no way that any of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's stuff can be translated to film properly,it's much to literally rich...

Breakfast At Tiffany's

The local cinema showed this on Valentine's Day. It's one of my girlfriend's favourite films, and I had never seen it, so we popped along.

It's really good. I was surprised. Audrey Hepburn is very good.

Of course, Mickey Rooney's character is horrible and unfortunate. Only one guy in the cinema was laughing during that, the rest of this just had this palpable group awkwardness.

I loved the look of the film stock too, the colours and the texture. They should really show more classic films in cinemas.

However, I fear Moon River will never leave my mind.

The Crazies. Never saw the original.

It was pretty much half and half, close to the middle of good and bad, with a slight lean towards bad. Standard "bio-chemical weapon leak/infected peoples/zombie" scenario. A small group of people survive and have to fight their way through town, yadda yadda yadda.

The movie did lack the gore I was expecting and was slow paced. A couple of "seriously?!" moments and a handful of pop out in your face scenes.

Wait for it on DVD or cable. Its probably more enjoyable if you are at home in bed with a bag of cheetos resting on your belly which prevents you from reaching for the remote that is just a few hairs length out of your reach.

Last night I watched Mesrine: L'instinct de Mort. Vincent Cassel plays Jacques Mesrine, a real life guy who came back from Algeria and fucked shit up in the 60s and 70s France. Good film. 8/10.

^ I liked some of it but felt it dragged on far too long in places. Half an hour could've been chopped and it still would've worked.

The music seemed poorly edited too - almost to the point of pissing me off.

Also... There seemed to be a lot of technical goofs - like when Teddy is talking to the prisoner in the cell and the prisoner's arms are holding on to the cage when viewed from Teddy's persepctive, but he is scratching his head when the camera is behind him. Lots of people seem to be putting this down to Teddy's mental state though - signs that he's cracking up. I'm not so sure it isn't just shit attention to detail myself.

"Crash" 1996 ( James Spader/ Holly Hunter ) Directed by David Cronenberg.

A car safety film director ( James Spader ) has a head on collision with another car carrying a doctor and her husband, killing the husband by hurling him through the windshields of both cars. The doctor ( Holly Hunter ) then flashes some tit at him while trying to remove her seatbelt.
Initiating the realization that they are both car crash sexual fetishists. And that was the milder part of just how twisted this film gets.

Excellent performances by Rosanna Arquette, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas, and Deborah Kara Unger. In one scene, Holly Hunter's character gets so turned on by an insurance safety crash video (which they all watch to get turned on) that she becomes fixated on the screen when the tape jams. She suddenly leaps to her feet, banging into the coffee table and says, "Now, where's the remote. I'm certain that we get to see this scene again... in slow motion I mean... in detail." as she sniffs and shakes like a crackhead about to get a fix.

It features a piercing electric guitar score by Howard Shore.

Be sure to see the NC-17 version if you're gonna watch this. Might as well.

it's been a while since i've watched it, i think i'm due too

anyway, i watched becket. good stuff, great lead actors. i thought that henry was the more compelling character, if not ever, you know, likeable at any particular point

i AM a brad pitt fan, and i thought it wasn't his best role for sure. he had some funny stuff, but also a decent amount of over the top dumb jock type of moments that were too forced to me.

I don't think Brad does comedy very easily which why it seemed contrived in places. I mean, I really liked his character but if anyone else had been doing it then it wouldn't have been worth mentioning really.

Over the weekend I saw Traitor which was good - like Guy Pearce very much and Lakeview Terrace which I thought was plain weird. Also the last Harry Potter one, which was good. I know, it's a kids film....

I watched “A Serious Man” last night…I could understand if people didn’t care for it…I feel kind of mixed, myself…I kept waiting for the folk tale beginning to become relevant…and the ending couldn’t have been less crowd pleasing…

Pretty unsatisfying.

I think it was that life -- though not meaningless -- has great randomness to which you can't assign significance (including that prologue). I can get behind that about 60%. I guess what's important is how we react to events, not how we analyze them.

But, yeah -- interesting movie, but not a great one.

One of my most favoritest movies ever. On July 21, 1994 I traveled 404 kilometers/251 miles by train to see it at a cinema.

Invention of Lying.

I really really enjoyed it. Ricky Gervais did a really good job with it.

*spoiler alert*

The only downer was the surprisingly very sad scene where Ricky's mum dies, and hes sitting by her bedside. I was watching it with my girlfriend who's dad passed away 3 years ago almost to the day, while she was sitting at his bedside (he had lung cancer). I looked over and she got very upset and was crying. Poor girl. If I knew it had that scene in the film I prob wouldnt have watched it with her.

'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou' - Beautiful, intelligent, funny, touching, sarcastic, great.

'Survive Style 5+' - A fucking great Japanese movie with Vinnie Jones in it. Also beautiful. The photography is just excelent and the story, well, I think I would not be able to explain. Just watch if you have the chance. Highly recommended. (y) (y) (y) (y)

And in a pretty poignant contrast I watched “Creature From the Black Lagoon”…which I had never seen in full…it’s awesome…particularly the underwater stuff…looks amazing, big screen screams, good times…a classic film…

Most of my movie watching these last month has been done on planes:

"Amelia"
fell asleep, woke up, fell asleep, meh. I also keep referring to it as "amelie" in my own head.

"It's Complicated"
Can't help it, I enjoyed myself.

"Inside Hana's Suitcase"
doc about a holocaust survivor and his sister who died in a camp. pretty good.

"Sherlock Holmes"
didnt fall asleep this time. not too shabby the second time around

"The Science of sleep"
Totally fucked up little movie, and goddamn did a few scenes made me laugh (mostly any with the coworker named "guy")
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0354899/

"Crazy Heart"
I dunno, I didn't think it was that amazing. In the fall I watched a movie with Jeff Bridges called The Open Road (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1007018/) which is basically the exact same story/character except he plays an aging baseball star vs. country singer. Get some new material Bridges!

"Reds"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082979/
way too long for my liking, but a decent flick. I'm such sucker for Warren Beatty.

Watched Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion (already seen it before) last night.

For whatever reason, I've ran in to some old friends online but I also ran in to someone literally in the middle of a crosswalk that I haven't seen since high school. The fact that we both live in the same town, which isn't a major spot to move to in itself (most go to SF directly), is super strange. Anyhow, so I saw R&M on netflix instant watch and decided to go for it.

The movie is really ridiculous and I love it. :p
