Yeah, I'm in my last days at one job before starting a new one, so I'm fairly restless and unfocused at work. So, of course, I thought of this place. :D

The Last Picture Show is terrific, and, yes, Texasville is absolutely awful. The tone is wildly different, which isn't necessarily bad in and of itself, but it makes a mockery of the original, treating each character with screwball contempt. I'm honestly not sure if it's worth watching even as a curiosity, in retrospect.

Saw Real Steel last weekend, I had very low hopes that this movie would be any good. But I was a fan of Battle Bots on TV, and I had seen the Twilight Zone episode that the movie was very roughly based on. and I mean VERY.
Anyway, it turned out much better than expected. It was a good story, almost believable, and the action was pretty darn good. Reminded me of Rocky. Underdog get's beat down, but comes back to win.

Lately I've been watching movies that I am pretty sure I will not enjoy, but watch them simply I have heard so much about them, either mentioned in other movies, award shows or have people around me mention them, and I no longer want to be left "out of the loop".
The latest one was The Goodbye Girl (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076095/) with Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason, which by chance happened to be on the TCM channel this past Friday. Yep this is an oldie, all the way back from 1977! But I still clearly remember the mushy theme song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX8NC4ck3IY) by David Gates which was all over the radio back when I was a little kid just getting into music. Sheesh this wasn't easy to watch because I dread watching chick flicks and "relationship" movies in general. But I can see why it got so much attention and have to admit it was pretty good and was actually rather humorous, though it is not a comedy.
Next movie to sit through while watching the clock :), The Lion King.

^ If you want something sci-fi, creepy with a good story and from the 60s, you might want to give this film a shot:
Five Million Years To Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qfgPI3PijU)
From Hammer Films, sort of a cheap-horror-film-factory type of studio, but they had their share of good movies and I think this is one of them. Saw this as a 10 year old and it really scared me and I still get spooked watching it by myself at night! While a couple of times the special effects are really lo-tech - hey it was the late 60s so give them a break - if one can do the "suspension of disbelief" thing, they'll enjoy it.
There is something about old British horror films that most other countries cannot seem to duplicate and I think this movie has that quality. (y)

Morphine (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1186366/)
It was on SBS last night. It's a semi-autobiographical movie about Mikhail Bulgakov's time as a country doctor during the formation of the Soviet Union. It looks at how he developed a morphine addiction and how his life was spiraling out of control. I wanted to see it a couple of years ago when the Russian film festival was on but i couldn't get out of work.
Not too bad. Bulgakov fans should like it

I must be honest and admit that i did avoid that whole chipmunks issue at the cinema this morning.
We were in the cinema getting a couple of drinks and the trailers were playing. I hadnt told the kids what we were going to see all week as a surprise.
Then the chipmunks trailer came on and my eldest (5) became entranced and just before she opened her mouth to say what was most probably a request to see the little annoying buggers, I said "We are going to see Puss in boots", cue cheering and smiles.
I can handle occasional chipmunk films on the telly but there is no way i am paying a lot to sit in a room with loads of kids going mental for the chipmunks being too annoying at that volume.

The Descendants: Felt absolutely no connection to any character in the movie in any way shape or form.
Beginners: Perfect. Why the fuck this wasn't nominated for best film at the Oscars I have no clue. That goddamn dog made me fall in love with him too, bugger.
The Artist: I wasn't sure if I was going to love it going in but it kept me completely entertained, although it could have used more tap dancing. Yet again, MORE PUPPIES.
Albert Nobbs: I thought it was going to be sadder? I was oddly disappointed in the film for this reason alone. Regardless, it is an excellent film.
The Tree of Life: I hated it. I expected as much because I hated The Thin Red Line as well. If they had expanded on the middle portion more it would have been an amazing film because he did a beautiful job when he just focused on the family dynamics but the crap with the IMAX shots and Sean Penn and the opera soundtrack were boring and pointless. I can see what he was attempting to do but good grief man.
The Iron Lady: Meryl was awesome as always. I felt depressed after watching it though.
Downton Abbey (seasons 1 & 2): Became an addict and watched both seasons within a week. I WANT MORE NOW.

I went with my kids for the first time to the newly renovated old cinema in town here and was blown away by it. It had/possibly still has the biggest screen in the country but the building itself is just stunning. Really beautiful interior-all the original ceiling features have been kept and renovated, the seating has been done for comfort instead of packing tonnes of folk in so you get essentially a comfy armchair with so much leg room. The sound is immense, just an amazing experience.
Anyway....sorry about all that blurb, but had to share on the offchance any of you kids should ever be stuck for something to do in a small Worcestershire town!!
We saw Mission Impossible 18 or whatever it is...ridiculous but really enjoyed it, especially the Simon Pegg's face on the screen bit.

”U2: From the Sky Down” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2007385/)...I’m a little perplexed as to why it’s rated so high...it was just “average” and I’m a fan, especially of the Achtung period...pretty cool to see how songs morphed from one thing into another and how huge a part Daniel Lanois played in the mix and the basis of some of the biggest riffs on the record...

A rainy bank holiday monday meant housework and chores and 2 uber bored kids so i had to resort to kids films to entertain them. Today we have watched:
Hop - shite, really weak and there are some voices in this who should know better.
Flushed Away - I thought it was crap, twee and not that funny. The kids thought it was amazing
Enchanted - utter drivel. My daughter was transfixed throughout.
Robin Hood (Disney style) - its not the best disney but has its moments. Good tunes.

Recently I have watched (all for the first time).
The Dark Knight, very good, don't know why it never interested me before.
The Godfather, knew I'd like it, just had to be patient and give it a go.
Midnight Express, don't fucking go to Turkey!

anyhoo i watched moneyball t'other day and it was pretty good , wish i'd known a bit more about how baseball clubs are set up and a better understanding of what tactics they were employing but it was cool . i really like jonah hill, he's underrated.

oh god it's hard to remember.
the great white silence (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoe7noZkLlI). amazing documentary from captain scott's south pole expedition. original colour tints and really modern images. brilliant.
young adult. pretty good. charlize theron was great as the least likeable protagonist for a while. strangest sex scene i've seen in a long time too.
searching for sugar man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QL5TffdOQ7g). outstanding! *MASSIVE SPOILER*, but i'm going to see rodriguez live in december. been working with the promoter to arrange stuff for our cinema.
tomorrow i am going to see looper.

judge dredd - lotsa bloodshed and quite brutal. good fun. karl urban and avon barksdale.
looper - enjoyed this. is it me or is does emily blunt of 2012 look different to emily blunt of earlier times?
being elmo - doco about the guy behind elmo. damn near made me cry. nearly. but not quite.

watched these on the plane:
five year engagement: another movie in which emily blunt looks a little odd. i feel like i've seen every jason segel movie ever.
snow white and the huntsman: kristen stewart is attractive in this. not much to it, but i enjoyed it.
nightfall - a hong kong (?) crime thriller. has the guy from election in it. you can piece it together pretty early on so a bit meh.
think like a man - by this stage i still couldn't sleep and was scraping from the bottom of the barrell.

Dredd
I was a BIG fan of the comics as a kid, only comic I collected religiously. I thought they did a very good job with what looks to be a limited budget. Stayed true to the character. Good, fun, simple story.
Would love there to be a sequel so they could expand on it.

Moonrise Kingdom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N8wkVA4_8s). These kind of movies always remind me of Jean Pierre Jeunet and his quirky weird movies.
Liked it a lot. Not a mainstream blockbuster, not the hit of the summer, but fun and different.

The Man With the Iron Fists
As much as I love martial arts flicks and the Wu-Tang Clan. This film was a mess. It had too much in story and not much time to tell it. The fight scenes were subpar with odd camera angles and the dialogue was contrived. I came in excited to see this movie and came out pretty bummed. Some cool stuff happened but not enough to keep my interest.

Moonrise Kingdom. I'm a big Wes Anderson fan but I just could not get into it. Anderson's films have a way of growing on me but I think the kid stars didn't have enough range.

Who dissects girls and then asks if she likes Huey Lewis and the News? Man I love that movie! Patrick Bateman!!!!
I loved Paranorman. It might scare small kids, heck it scared me. It was a brilliant film though. Funny and scary.
BTW I just noticed your signature!
Clerks! Dante! I just watched that again recently. Good memories from my highschool days.

I saw the Oscilloscope-produced documentary, "Dear Zachary: A Letter To A Son About His Father." I don't even know how I came to it, I just stumbled across it on YouTube, and once I saw that familiar logo, I figured I'd watch it. Man, it was amazing, but my god, was it BRUTAL. If you're in the mood for a good cry, watch it. It's heartbreaking.

I love that movie but I kinda agree about the third act.
I just watched Men in Black 3 at the in-laws and I surprisingly didn't hate it.

”The Reef” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1320291/)…I liked it,but it’s my kind of thing…beautiful scenery, shipwreck, survival and mofo SHARKS!!!...Liked it much more than ”Open Water” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374102/?ref_=fn_al_tt_9)…also supposedly based on true events…

Yep. Could not finish watching the picture.
And Oliver Stone has his name attached to that. What the hell was he thinking. I wonder if directors and actors/actresses realize that the movie they're in is a piece of shit while they're filming it or if it comes as a surprise upon viewing.
I saw The Master. Folks, I'm not gonna lie: I dosed off during the 1st portion of it. But that's my bad not PT Andersons. Phillip Seymour Hoffman never disappoints and he brought his A Game to the table. Best movie I've seen with him since "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead"

lez miz: 9/10. anyone who hated it really just wants to see the bway show on screen. great flick
hobbit: 8/10. amazing cinematography. i read the books in hs, listened to the audio version from 1988 on a car ride the day after - the film was pretty faithful. stunning, the only warts i saw were towards the end, during on of the fight scenes - one or two really bad lines that (added in, i think)... totally killed the hobbit boner. good though
also: the 3D was just right
lincoln: 7.5/10. totally worth it, though lacked a bit of depth. glad the film will bring spark interest in the story for new generations.
life of pi: 7/10. beautiful cinematography. saw it in 3D, the visuals were excellent. the story was alright. i saw 'the black stallion' many times as a kid and it reminded me of that.
into the wild 8.5/10. great film of a true story. directed by sean penn. no frills approach. i liked that the actor was an unknown picked by penn. one of those "makes you think" movies.
