I saw the Halloween remake last night.
I totally dug the first 15 minutes or so, but after that I was struggling to stay awake.
I did like how they made Michael Myers more human like as far as the way he moved.
Overall...my advice to you is to skip it.

Did you like it?

TAL

It was interesting at times. More so when they came to the parts that had stuff from film and tv.
And it was bad that it ended in 1994, since a bit has happened since then.

I was gonna go next for the 14 hour documentary he did about WWII, but I'm not quite sure now.

abcdefz

I watched bits and pieces of Baseball. It was fine.

I watched most of Jazz, which was pretty good.

The Civil War was good.

I think Burns' stuff is about as good as your interest in the subject matter. I mean, it's well done, but I'm not sure it can hold you if you
don't already have an interest in the first place.

^I still think Donnie Darko is his best work...no,hey,I'm serious...I never realized "Dirty Harry" was a take off on the Zodiac killings....the film still left me doubting about whether or not Leigh was absolutley, positively him......and what was he doing with those squirrels in his traler...eating them?...I mean he had them in the fridge or freezer...shit....

Freaky shit.

Supposedly, Vallejo police was going to pull DNA samples from the envelopes that Fincher recovered.
I wonder what ever happened with that.

while zodiac was a very well-done, entertaining film with great acting, direciton, and production values, david fincher based his film on absolute bullshit.

robert graysmith and his books have been completely discredited. he made up a lot of his claims, which were based on rumours, and made himself out to be some sort of super detective.

arthur leigh allen was not the zodiac killer, and was ruled out through dna testing, and polygraph testing. he also didn't match the physical description of the killer:

^ohhhh I see that case was actually re-opened in March of 07'....freaky....wonder if it's one of those cases where the killer may have died or as suggested in the film is in prison on other criminal charges...my library does have "The Most Dangerous Game" though, maybe I'll read it....

This has me thinking bout other true serial killer films??

"Summer of Sam" Spike Lee Joint
"Boston Strangler" Tony Curtis
"To Catch a Killer" Brian Deheny = John Wayne Gacy

oh and fairly recently I watched "The Riverman" with Cary Elwes where he does a frigin creepy Ted Bundy thing....

Stranger Than Fiction

I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't know what to expect, but it turned out to be quite a funny, clever little film. It couldn't make up its mind what kind of film it was at times, it seemed to dispense with the main plot gimmick from time to time, but over all it was a good idea. I didn't really buy the romance, there should have been more courting, or it should have been realized later on in the film, but I suppose they had other stuff to do so needed to get it up and running early.

Ferrell is spot on in the film too. At the start you think he's going to phone in the performance, but he nails the character perfectly. The script is funny and though provoking. And Queen Latifah doesn't ruin it!

It was probably my favorite movie of 2007. I don't even like the guy but that movie sucked me in within the first few minutes and never let go. And it made me pull out a lot of old records.

I rented Bright Young Things or Pretty Young Things or whatever it was called. Stephen Fry directed it and it had a lot of good actors in the cast. It was bland and dreadful and I would have turned it off except that it was cold and I was wrapped in a warm blanket and I didn't have any other DVDs in the player at the time.

I am rewatching the last season of The Wire. No surprise that it's better than most of the movies I've rented this month.

Me too. I actually did a 3:10 double feature the other night when I watched both of them. They're both good in their own way. The original is a classic, but the remake is good too. I thought it was much better than the first one. No big scares (meaning no edge of your seat/jump out of your skin bits) but i liked the characters much more than the guys in Hostel, and i liked the way it explored the people who paid to joined the 'hunting club'.

Best performance was from Heather Matarazzo - whose demise made me feel most queasy.

I think David Lynch made Eraserhead in college. I have not seen it in awhile but I remember the wind and city sounds being very eerie. I think Lynch was pointing out how screaming babies can lock you down and drive you mad. I don't think he likes relationships or kids very much. I think I liked the film for its rawness.

Hey, I finally joined Netflix. My first 3 movies arrived tonight. Fido is about zombies being adopted as pets. Sicko and a documentary about Thelonious Monk (directed by Clint Eastwood) are the other two I got in the mail. I think I will like Netflix much better than running to the video store and I will get my money's worth. I love having access to documentaries, concert dvds, kids in the hall and other offbeat choices that video stores do not carry.

It was actually pretty bad I thought. I saw it on a list somewhere of movies you could watch with your girlfriend and not get bored. The 1992 Seattle setting was more interesting than anything that happened with the characters. Alice in Chains was in that movie for crap's sake.

I think you're right. Lynch's sound design is always all kind sof awesome, anyway.

I think he made Eraserhead at American Film Institute. I'm almost positive "Alphabet" and "The Grandmother" were done there,

Casey's always been good. If you just watch his performance in Good Will Hunting... I think he just made it look so easy. Buscemi directed
him in a movie called Lonesome Jim, and he was great, and a complicated little prick. He's got this one scene where his mom -- who's
pretty much a sweetheart with good intentions -- is trying to cheer him up, and he basically just quietly, innocently blames her, and tells
her that she's a bad parent and that's why he's messed up. He's so self-centered he can't see that he's the one wallowing in indulgence.
Mary Kay Place is his mom and the look on her face... she keeps smiling, but it's like she just took a knife in the gut. So she keeps on
consoling him while trying to get out of the room before she cries or something. It's an amazing scene.

You are correct about the American Film Institute. One of the extras on the Eraserhead DVD has Lynch talking about the film. It is an awesome peek into Lynch's mind. He did mention going to a vet and getting a animal fetus of some kind. I have the film on DVD but have not watched it in years. When I ordered it you could only get it from Lynch's website. He went it in a nice box with some artwork. It was kind of like getting a personal gift from the artist.

I think my growing distaste for Dreyfuss' fussy whiny shtick would really taint my viewing of that these days. Back then, it had a certain

Thelonious Sphere Monk! With a name like that how can you go wrong?
Wow, this was an excellent documentary. Monk was a genius in spite of his demons. He was schizophrenic and his voice wanders like his music. His long beard and cool hats.....his creation of avante garde jazz....his walking in circles as he talks to himself yet you can almost see the notes zooming around in his head. If you like his music then watch this dvd and if you don't like be-bop swing funky jazz do not pass it up because you will be missing the craziest madman genius of the jazz piano.

RAMBO!

ITS SHIT! BUT ALSO AMAZING!

Easily the most violent film I have ever seen. Its not just that literally hundreds of people die, its just that they die in spectacularly gory fashion. And its not just the badguys either, you see innocent men, women and children shot to bits. Legs, guts, heads, etc go flying.

Its a completely ludicrous film, but you just sit there with a silly grin on your face as its so ludicrous. The plot is insanely shit, the acting is terrible and the characters Rambo is rescuing are so unlikeable I spent the last half hoping he'd kill them himself. The finale is so simplistically raw it beggars belief. And the final final attempt to somehow link the film to First Blood is stupid.

Stallone also needs a new DP, this film is ramped up with every kind of trick lens/filter he could find. Stop it.

But it is fun.

It was part of a foreign film series here spotlighting recent movies that would otherwise not have been shown in the states.
It's really a pretty amazing movie. I knew nothing about it going in, which I prefer, and was kind of taken aback.
It was much better than I had anticipated. Anyone else seen it?

Apparently the star Pyotr Mamonov used to be a Russian rock star. Anyone from Russia?

Edit: I forgot, after every film in the series they show a short film.
The one after Ostrov was an animated short called Brother by Adam Elliot. It's part of a trilogy, along with Cousin and Uncle.
Adam Elliot seems like a very cool guy and is currently working on a full-length film set to come out towards the end of this year.

“Live Free or Die Hard”…it stank…bared little resemblance in spirit or substance to the previous chapters…it was like it was coincidental that Willis was playing John McLain…I also watched the Marlon Brando version of “Mutiny on the Bounty” I still think the Mel Gibson, Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day Lewis, Liam Neeson telling is by far the best…Bogart’s was just bad…

I went to see No Country for Old Men again. I'm repeating this because I'd like to read anybody else's further thoughts.

Copied from another thread:

I decided to see the movie again this weekend.

SPOILERS

...the whole aftermath definitely worked better the second time -- especially noticing that the last time we see Moss alive, the screen
fades to black -- and everything's fine until we get to the sheriff going to the wheelchair guy's house and they start ruminating. That,
pretty much back to back with the dream rumination... it just feels like the movie peters out more than becomes the elegy it's supposed
to be. Maybe that's the "old men" part of things -- the movie sort of retires more than ends, but it still seems like something
that works much better intellectually than it does emotionally.

I had forgotten some of the nifty pulling-buckshot-from-my-body scenes that Moss and Chigurh (sp?) have. Plus, I'd known Moss was
smart (to a point) and resourceful, but this time I connected it with him being a Vietnam vet, too. I wonder if that's a coincidence.

and also two days in paris, a film written and directed by julie delpy. it has adam goldberg in it doing his usual schtik. i seriously wondered whether julie delpy could be funny and/or talented directing wise but it turns out she is both. more women behind the camera, say i.

That's good to hear. I'm more curious now. I was pretty put off by the idea of spending two hours watching some guy blink -- sounded pretty bleak.

I liked that, too. I'd already liked her from Before Sunrise, but then was really blown away by her in Before Sunset. That was pretty brave
to have that meltdown that her character did -- a lot of actresses wouldn't go there, I don't think, and she may have even written that.
So I had hopes for 2 Days, and liked it quite a bit. (y)

Meet the Robinsons. It was way below average bordering on shit for a new animated kids feature.

I could get down with The Incredibles, Madagascar, and a few others..but this one was just boring. Usually you have those comments or references for adults that work both ways for the kids amusement too, but none of that in this one.

Shoot Em Up.

Raises the bar for completely brainless entertainment. I'm not sure if it was supposed to be satirical, but it was just...wow. I thought Crank was the most ridiculous action movie ever.

Not to spoil anything or whatever, but I don't think you're supposed to feed a newborn actual baby food, let alone shove it in a backpack in the upright position, continually grab it by the feet and slide it across the floor and expect it to survive. These kinds of images only contribute to bad parenting.

Haha. I missed you, bro.

Watched We Own the Night last night. I think they tried to make too much out of it. I think they could have had a nice little movie with just the stuff about the sibling rivalry, father issues, and racism. But then it tried to turn into a thriller and was ultimately unsatisfying.

Except for the first scene of the movie. Whew. Is it just me or is it hot in here?

I Could Never Be Your Woman

Amy Heckerling movie with Michelle Pfieffer and Paul Rudd.

Boy, this was pretty bad. Very forced "comedy" with some gaping holes in logic and credibility.

Um... would a mature 42 year old woman really have a shattering problem dating a 29 year old man she really really likes... just because
of the age difference?

Plus, I couldn't buy Paul Rudd as a 29 year old. Put these two together onscreen and the age difference just doesn't read much at all.

It also has the Miss Congeniality problem. Like, um, I'm supposed to think Sandra Bollock is unattractive, I'm also supposed to
believe that everyone just relates to Michelle Pfieffer as "old"?

And both leads are trying waaaaaaaaaaaayyyy too hard. Pfieffer plays it like she's in a sitcom and Rudd amps up the wacky.
(To his credit, he makes it work from time to time.)

abcdefz

It was a combination of stuff. Kinda scuzzy producer fucked the project, money-wise (Michelle Pfieffer got screwed* because she agreed
to reduce her salary for a percentage of the box office). When they finally settled on DTV, Heckerling couldn't even rescue all the materials,
so she cut the movie as best she could. All this went on over a period of a couple of years while, I think, BOTH of her parents got sick
and she was trying to take care of them. Plus the producer had them shoot the L.A. picture in England for a tax break, etc. etc. I read
an article about it -- that's the only way I knew it existed. But the article said the movie turned out all right, and it really, really didn't.
