i wanted to enjoy this movie... but daft punk made it really hard. it had a pretty cool soundtrack and was filmed well... but who wants to watch a robot walk in a desert for 20 minutes?

its strange..some of the visuals are stunning..but my christ does it need an editor. It could have been a really cool 20/30 minute film...but it just goes on and on and on in bits. Again, great idea, great "story", great visuals...but very bad choices on the editing.

Mostly for Alan Rickman, who was all right.

The movie was better than it had any right to be, and one genuine, unconventional surprise that it later turned its back on. Booooooooo.

7/10.

Inland Empire.

One of two Lynch movies I haven't made it through. It was pretty nifty when an actual plot kicked in about 15 minutes in, but then it
seeemed to abandon it later and I lost interest.

I understand the whole "dream state" thing, but the fact is, a person's dreams are usually pretty boring to other people.

A Little Princess.

I hadn't seen anything of Alfonso Cuarón's before Great Expectations, and this guy's currently on my must-see list when anything
new comes out. I didn't get much out of this (or Great Expectations), so I'm glad that whatever happened happened so that
Y tu mamá también could really kick start his career.

i'm not there was utterly brilliant, masterful filmmaking. arguably the greatest performance of blanchett's career. in fact the entire cast was fantastic. bought the dvd.

vantage point was nothing more than generic action fodder. entertaining though.

Yeah..probably one of the most frustrating things about INLAND EMPIRE is that it flirts with what is a pretty cool premise...then kind of abandons it, or at least loses it amongst all the other stuff.

Still, its more or less a riff on the same premise from Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway....

Like he did with Twin Peaks. The show is one of the best ever made but it could've been better if the end hadn't been so fucked up.

I have to disagree with the comparison. Twin Peaks certainly lost some of its drive as it went on, but it was still a damn fine TV show. And most importantly it lost its way when Lynch became less involved. AND the end of Twin Peaks was pretty redemptive if you ask me...the Wyndom Earle storyline restored some of its past glory and the final episode was a classic.

agreed. earle was incredible, played brilliantly by kenneth welsh. that whole story arc, including the white and black lodges, really gave the show a much needed shot in the arm. there was going to be a third season but unfortunately abc had other plans.

Sure it was a great show. I agree and also said that. But the end could've been perfect if they hadn't rushed the things up. Like we don't know what happened with the most part of the characters. They were simply forgotten.
But the story around Earle, the lodge and Cooper was really great (and sometimes pretty scary).

yup. And Lynch had agreed to come back on board and had renewed his passion for the show...it could have been so good....they had set up what could have been a great 3rd series...

In Bruges

Disappointing. The "comedy" was completely out of place in what was otherwise an interesting and dark film. Yet the "im a cheeky lovable controversial chappy" Colin Farrell bits were a serious piece of poor judgement, and left the film muddled and confused.

the film was marketed as being much more of a comedy, when its actually quite dark. It had its moments, but overall A missed opportunity.

It was okay, but I'm a little disconnected because I feel a huge amount of sympathy for people who want to kill themselves, and I don't
understand the grief about it. It seems selfish to me that survivors would be angry or even very sad about it when clearly these folks
have been in huge emotional pain for pretty much their entire lives.

I think part of the problem for me is that I don't find Ethan complex -- just unreasonable and unlikeable. And yet most of the other
actors themselves weren't very good. (This is how I remember it, anyway.)

I need to see it again, though. Maybe my expectations were way out of line. I think it's Scorsese's favorite movie, which maybe is
part of why I had such disproportionate hopes for it.

Reasonable, but I disagree about the quality of acting. There's a fair amount of depth to the cast and there's a logical explanation as to why Ethan is the way he is. Fuck it, I don't need to sell the movie.:D

In the last couple days I've watched Knocked Up and Superbad for the first time. They are what they are, and you can pretty much take them or leave them. I loved 40 Year Old Virgin, it's probably one of my favourite comedies, so I was kinda disappointed cuz I felt they didn't quite match up. Still hilarious movies though, the first films that have made me laugh out loud for a while. And Seth Rogen is a legend, I would love to have a beer with that guy. kontroll: hungarian film about a group of guys working in the budapest underground. mostly brilliant. inventive, funny, la la la, i recommend it.
batman begins: i enjoyed it a lot more than i thought i would. it doesn't feel like it goes on too long, like the dark knight does. i liked the hallucinogenic scary stuff. very clever.

the wackness.

i thought it was going to be a generic coming of age sort of movie that was only notable for its 90's setting and shit hot soundtrack but not so.

i thought it was entirely charming and good performances all round. lots of laughs that i didn't expect. my friend i went with saw it first at the edinburgh film festival and thought (sir) ben kingsley was hamming it up a bit at first viewing but not so much on the second.

the main dude, also. i liked him. i found the way he spoke extremely attractive. or maybe it was just the way he moved his mouth. my friend said he had a really bad underbite (er, this has nothing to do with the movie.. totally superficial) and looked a bit cavemanesque. haha. anyway, i thought his performance was great and understated and quite touching.

4/5 stars. if we're rating out of 5. which i am.

The Strangers

It was.....OK. The trailer looked quite intriguing so I went along despite having reservations about any modern horror, but for the most part it was interesting/tense enough but it lacked.....something I can't quite put my finger on. It's well made but it seemed formulaic, some bits were direct rip offs from Halloween. Thematically too it owed alot to Halloween, but overall it missed the mark and seemed kind of shallow.

so it was kinda pointless, but had its moments.

Liv Tyler is quite attractive.

I Loved that Movie: They took a mediocre home invasion movie and kicked it up a level. That's one of the few movies I've seen where when the credits rolled and the lights were turned on everyone were looking at each other like they just heard a secret that everyone that hadn't seen the movie weren't privy too

i was a few feet away from maher on the red carpet and he's a lot taller or bigger in person. it was kind of funny though, as there were a few religious protestors on hand, who were in fact not very enthusiastic and gave only a handful of uninspired, half assed chants. anyways, there was a brief intro by bill and director larry charles, then a q&a session afterwards. the movie itself was amazing, funny as hell. there are so many hysterical moments and the gags don't stop. a great night and a lot of fun.

I think the way IFO handled the 9/11-era caused a pattern of deception that has not only fed diffuse public cynicism but has provided an opening for alternate theories of 9/11 to flourish. Theories of a both lubricant and 'doubled teamed' assault have recently seen the light and as of yet have not been proven false.

The Fall.

it's by the guy who did The Cell. ehhhh, it was okay. it kind of reminded me of pan's labyrinth lite. (and I was disappointed by pan's labyrinth anyway).

Lee Pace is handsome as can be, and the little girl in it is very cute and a non-actor, but pulls off her part fantastically.

all in all, I found the fantasy sequences far less interesting than the main storyline. and ugly, sort of tacky and not framed well. although there are a couple pretty interesting things to look at...but then even those got cheesified. like this thing: http://horsesthink.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/tarsem-the-fall-stills-07.jpg it looks pretty awesome, but then there's a weird editing thing at the end of the scene here the camera jumps back and zooms out and the guy's yelling echos. really cheesy and ruins the whole scene. strange because the main storyline is really great-looking and acted well. but even that was weird because I didn't really understand the motivations of the characters. meh.

oof, lee pace. so attractive though, and talented. my goodness.

Less Than Zero

My wife sat beside Jaime Gertz at a wedding. My wife was chatting it up to a lady next to her and then elbowed me to introduce me. The funny thing is that my wife still really has no idea who she is and what Less Than Zero is and when she hears Lost Boys thinks of Tinkerbell not some movie with Corey Haim.

The last film that I watched was on BBC America last night. It was called the Human Camera. It was about an artist named Steven Wiltshire. He is an autistic savant and sketches detailed buildings from memory. He took a 15 minute helicopter ride with no camera or notepad. Then he went and sketched a perfect large scale panorama on London. It was a very good documentary.
Check this link out.

I also saw a very sad yet unbelieveable documentary on the National Georgraphic channel. It was called Solo: Lost at Sea. It is about a man that tried to kayak from Australia to New Zealand.

Spirited Away

I know it's the most commercial Studio Ghibli film because it won an Oscar blah blah blah but it's still my favourite out of the ones I've seen so far, I get totally lost in it.

"Talk to Me" with Don Cheadle...just didn't work...as far as movies about the radio go,it's way down there...I get the feeling Ralph "Petey" Greene may have been a hell of alot more interesting than the film portray's...

i've watched the bank job about a zillion times and it's a good, entertaining movie all around. yes, conspiracies orchestrated by intelligence agencies actually happen.

this film is not yet rated is a fascinating and very fun documentary, exposing the motion picture association of america's rating system, which is really nothing more than a form of censorship involving homophobia and other reactionary elements.

bought the i'm not there dvd. such a great film. blanchett was brilliant.

Death Proof is every bit as good as any Tarantino film. My ranking of his movies:

1. Jackie Brown
2. Reservoir Dogs
3. Death Proof
4. Kill Bill 2
5. Kill Bill
6. Pulp Fiction

Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist.

A little too long with some pretty unnecessary supporting character action (and one stomach turning bit involving some
overused gum), but it's worth a look.
