I feel sorry for Sony for putting on the Blu-Ray label on the front of PS3 boxes and the consumer still doesn't notice. (http://kotaku.com/gaming/how-do-i-hd/most-ps3-xbox-360-owners-unaware-of-hd-features-287579.php)

It's not a surprise. Apparently about half of the people who buy HDTV sets aren't actually watching HDTV and most of them don't realize it.

HD is not a fad. what the fuck. that's like saying color tv was a fad...
Thats probably because the digital age came really close to the HD stuff.
My dad thinks that he has it all on HD, but what he is actually watching is just digital.
I don't bother explaining because right now, HD is just a fad or for people who can't read text on games (isn't it dead rising and gears of war where you can't read stuff?)
dead rising.....and I doubt HD is a fad.

HD is amazingly overrated.

HD is amazingly overrated.
That's because you haven't seen true HD on a HD tv that is worthy.
I can't wait till HD DVD players comes down a bit more pricewise.
Look at all the poor folk in england having to replace their tvs eventually and shit.
Yeah what up with that shit? They are doing that here in the states eventually too. I have a small TV from 1983 that still works great but I may have to retire it in 2009. Not cool.

I love how people that have probably never seen HD content are saying how HD is overrated.
Not aiming this at anyone in particular, it's just something that is quite common.
I watch a lot of HD content and I struggle to switch back to regular tv or non hd downloads.
The only reason I haven't bought a blueray and/or hd dvd player yet is because they are still bickering too much among themselves.
Oh and I have an electric typewriter just lying around. PC's are a disgrace.

I would love to switch over to HD but it's still too expensive. I would only use it for the Xbox360, PS3 and blu-ray movies but since I don't have those yet it would pointless.
I just hope the overall price drops in the next five years so it will actually be affordable.

Actually LCD's use less power than cathodic tube tv's.
Other than that I really don't relate to your point about functionality with regards to the VHS vs the DVD. DVD players have the ability to restart a dvd at a specific point in the movie as well. In addition to that you don't have to rewind dvd's or search for a specific point in the movie by screwing up both your tape and your vcr's heads.
If you haven't already have a peek at some HD material somewhere. Do we need it as a species in order to survive? Hell no. Does it make movies, tv series and games look better and in some (most) cases make for a more realistic and intense experience? Oh my yes.
If you have the patience to download the 1080p version. If you have slightly less patience download the 720p.

I doubt it will raise IQ's.
A scratched hd/blueray disk will most likely be just as scratched and (un)recoverable as a scratched dvd or cd. The difference could be that if something isn't recoverable then the amount of lost data is far superior.
I built a pc specifically to watch hd content and I must admit that even that pc struggles with 1080p content.
For future reference, HD Ready = 720p, Full HD = 1080p.
TV is TV. I can not get excited about these things at all.

The human eye barely distinguishes between 1080p and 720p on a screen that is less than around 42" big. I bought a 32" screen and got a 720p screen because splashing out for the extra resolution serves no purpose whatsoever.
About the processing: it's not the reading speed that's tough on the pc's, it's the calculations that need to be done in order to interpret what is read from the disk that makes my pc blush and hickup. It might be solved with software and codecs instead of extra powerful hardware though.

so, i started to read this thread, and then it just got boring, so i skimmed. and then i couldn't focus on that either, so i just hit reply.
my apologies if i'm repeating something.
hdtv is pretty fucking fantastic. i swear that discovery hdtv is purely showing off because it can -- it makes real life seem colorless and drab. some of my HD channels are totally worth it. the ones that aren't are free, so i don't really care. my HDTV is fairly large, and is a thing of beauty, and thus it can do no wrong. so, all those factors considered, j'adore HDTV.
i would go further, but i'm scared i've rambled too much (i took some pain pill) and i don't wanna see the longest, worst post in the world tomorrow when i wake up.

try playing a pc game at 640*480 then increase the resoution to 1024*768 or if your pc can handle it increase it to 1280*1024. that increase is basicall the same as going from SD to HD. there's a remarkable difference. i don't see how anyone can't appreciate it. i can understand why someone would be pissed that they need to replace their tv but you can atleast appreciate better quality, no? the only why i can see someone not appreciating it is that they just don't have a good enough eye or don't know what to notice.

^^^Or it could just be that slight changes in technology really only interest a niche market.

It's not slight, the quality difference isn't something that is debatable. What's debatable is whether you care about the much higher quality.
To be honest I think it's one of those things that you don't need until you have it. Going back to non-hd material is a shock every single time.
