do you absolutely need to quit in order to do that?

based on the amount of time necessary to dedicate towards it...yeah basically.

background:

small computer shop in wealthy well to do neighborhood. Pretty regular frequent business, very small at this point. All sorts of fancy shit in the works involving partnering companies and the like which requires more full timers.

You'll kick yourself if you don't take the opportunity; it sounds like a good location. It's obviously going to take a lot of work initially, and you won't necessarily be raking it in. If you've done extensive (i mean extensive) research of businesses in the area, (and any competitors) and it still sounds like a good idea then I say go for it.

A mate and I just started a new video/film production business, called Mr Wolf Productions.

We are not planning to get an income from it for a few years yet as every dollar we make we will be buying new equipment, which means we will run it at a loss. We still get our income from our full time jobs.

Which is great, because if the business is listed as a partnership and not a propriety company, you can use that loss to offset your individual income on your tax return, which means you get taxed at the lower rate and basically make more money. I love loopholes.

i'd do it unless your full time job is one that's completely irreplacable

and the lady has an income yeah? so you wouldn't be going completely for broke at the start

I'd have to rationalize it by considering how much I'd regret it if I didn't give it a shot. You seem serious enough about it to post on the Beastie Boys Message Board. That's got to mean something. As long as you can take the risk financially anyway. Considering it's a partnership then it shouldn't be a huge loss. I say go for it. Then once Louisiana gets wiped off of the map, the missus can adopt me and I can work @ illegal alien income whilst making turkey sammiches on the side.

definately try it out and give it a little time. it may even take longer than you expect, but choose an amount of time you're willing to put into it and stick it out.

these opportunities dont come often for most people.

short answer, no.

I favor more of a school+crappy job+hard work = good job strategy that you then can bounce to better job to better job with.

This options sounds like you'll be stuck in Minnesota for a long time, which if you're fine with that, that's your bag. IMO you're reletively young and you don't have kids so you should be gallavanting around the states enjoying all this great land has to offer.

Personally I felt that the Midwest kinda blew in many ways and was happy to get away. You may feel differently.
