View Full Version : things to do with rice
one of the main things i eat when i'm lazy is rice. it's easy as hell because i bought a rice cooker too, so if i don't feel like finding something to eat, i'll make 2 cups of brown rice and that'll be that
the thing is, rice is so boring. what can i add to it to make it more interesting (while keeping in mind that the only reason i'm eating it is because i'm too lazy to cook something more substantial...no fancy stuff)? like some kind of sauce or seasoning or something

I eat brown rice two or three meals a day, every day. Yeah, it gets a little old sometimes.
Mainly, I add salsa. A tablespoon or two goes a long way.
Dijon isn't bad, but you have to use it judiciously. But then again, you're in law school, so...
Almonds. Raw almonds.
Buy a little pepper grinder and grind a bit of pepper in there. A bit.
Basil. Tomatoes.
I've experimented with a few different vinegars and... yeah, I don't know.
These are the low-cal, low sodium things. If I didn't give a damn about stuff like that, I'd probably try cheese, maybe sour cream.
I have mixed in peanut butter, which is tasty.
yeah, these are the kinds of answers i want, thanks
steak sauce sounds interesting, i'll probably try that tonight
salsa sounds good too
steak sauce: pretty good...pretty good...i give it a B, but i could see getting bored of it too
salsa's probably next
edit: actually i found a method that upgrades steak sauce to a B+. the trick was using more steak sauce

You don't need to do anything with Basmati rice. It's already done.
Still, if you have to do something, some fresh crushed garlic with a bit of butter.
Less is more.

Try different types of rice, too.
I stuck with this one brand for who knows how long and then, for the heck of it, tried the one that was a little more expensive, and it had waaaaaayyy more flavor to it.

is there a trader joe's near you? if so, check out their sauce section. mexican red sauce is my fave, but any of their others are awesome too and can make life a lot easier.

you may or may not be making fun of me but yeah, seriously rock what the hell
i'm laaaazyyyy
Dude, all you do is throw them all in your rice cooker. no prep necessary. Except the fried onions, you can buy that prepackaged shit, but its never as good as freshies.
i don't think you understand just how lazy i am

Throw some chopped hot dogs in it.
Shred some bologna, toss it in it.
Mustid with some bacon in rice? Hell yeah.
Of course some soy sauce is great.
While your rice is cooking, just open an egg and let it drizzle into the pot.
Find some kimchee and put it in your rice.
Open a can of tuna and put it in your rice.
Got a can of baked beans?
Man, I can go on and on and believe me, I'm pretty lazy about my food too. Sometimes though.

I'm not "making fun" so much as just observing what you've repeatedly said. You want it simple simple simple simple simple. I think the general idea was "what can of what can I open and drop a little into my rice. I might go so far as to squeeze a plastic bottle to ornament said rice, but that's about it: fuck chopping, fuck dicing, fuck shredding, fuck grating, fuck blanching, fuck marinading, fuck STIRRING if I don't really HAVE to; etc.; so with both hands tied behind your back, give me some ideas."
I think that's what I got, anyway.

Canned peas go well with it, too.
Back in the day I lived on canned peas + minute rice + steak sauce. I ate it straight from the pot while leaning over the sink.
I really miss those days.

rice + soy sauce = EASY yum :p
trust me, i'm asian -- i know my rice. lol. :D
you guys ever had "sticky rice"? it's not like the regular "white rice" that you normally see. you steam "sticky rice" in a bamboo basket-thingy and the cooked result is tannish-translucent rice that you can actually hold and ball up in your hands so you can make it bite-size. i don't know a single person who's tried it and doesn't like it.

i personally don't like the kikkoman stuff. it's got a weird flavor to it. but if you do use it, don't put too much on cause it WILL be too overpowering. use enough so the color of the rice is a mixture of white and brown.
the stuff i use is made by golden mountain and you can get it at any asian/oriental store.

Rice is great when you're hungry and want like 2000 of something....I just came back from Spain so we had a few stunning paella's over the summer, some pure sea food, some with chorizo and chicken....I also got into a rice side dish my old man makes with paprika and saffron.....and there's risotto's of course, portobello and parma or smoked salmon and champagne......sushi maybe it's best application....or basamati with butter chicken good gawd yes.....or even those sticky balls of rice at dim sum.....rice is nice....(y)

mmmmmmmm.... sushi...... (y)
You're all idiots...
Tabasco green pepper sauce is the best on rice... it's not as hot as regular tabasco, and adds alot of flavor.

Here's a weird one that worked today. Seems weird, though.
Brown rice. Grabbed some turkey slices and tore them up. A little salsa, one grind of pepper. Microwaved warm.
Oddly good. Very oddly, but good. Prep time (after rice had cooked): three minutes, maybe? Perspiration rating: 1 out of 10.
I was too lazy to open a can of tuna, basically.
