So far I've liked the Apatow-produced movies, but I haven't been over the moon about them or anything. Hopefully this is the one. (y)

The whole Judd Apatow approach of "be as profane as humanly possible" is sometimes hilarious, other times overbearing and kind of played out.
The plot itself has been done 304859859830932180923809380329 times previously...nothing really new or particularly groundbreaking.
Overall, it was pretty funny. McLovin' overall being the high point.
Michael Cena basically played George Michael Bluth in it.

agreed. my problem with this, and his other works, is it's just people being funny and not clever writing or dialogue. i always refer to hot fuzz when i give an example of what i find really hilarious - very well-written plot developments and lines, and not just a bunch of HO HO CRAZY SHIT funniness.
i probably laughed harder at the credits than i did the entire movie. still, it was a fun night out at the movies. a solid B.

I liked it a lot. This is my favorite of the Apatow-produced stuff so far.
They needed to cut an awful lot of the whole cop subplot or rewrite it or something. I know Seth was probably writing himself a part, but dang, it really ground things down.
Yeah, MC doesn't seem to have a huge hunk of range so far, but he was genius at what he did. Not sure Cary Grant had a huge amount of range either, come to think of it. If Cena keeps doing what he does, and that is indeed his schtick, as long as he keeps surprising with his nuance of reactions like does here, he may become the nerd equivalent of Walter Mattheau. Man, he even throws away a stupid vomit line ("Vomit, get out of here" or whatever) and had me laughing.
Superbad is EASILY the best directed movie of these Apatow films so far. Way, way better -- shots are actually lit and framed well and everything. This was actually a good looking movie, rather than just a "Grandpa's got a barn and a camera -- let's put on a show!" kind of thing. Oddly enough, it made this one feel more real -- at least until the cop schtick came back on again.
A couple of parts were pretty touching, too.

I enjoyed myself quite a bit. Easy to break it down but when it comes to it I laughed my ass off and that's what I was there for. Good to see more cameos by people (the old drunk man and the guy who was running that weird party are freaks and geeks alum as well as of course Martin Starr and others), and the girl with the period was on Undeclared. Sweet shit. I'm sad Jay Baruchel didn't show up, that I could see.
I swear to god I've been at parties like that before, the one where the guys were all like SING MAN, YOU'VE GOT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE - I realized that many of the party people I know are going to be like those dudes in the next 5 years. Hah.
I had the geekiest moment ever when I saw Joe Lo Truglio on screen (the guy in the car that backs up into Seth) and I leaned over to my friend and said "he's my myspace friend" like two seconds before he said that myspace line. oiiii. Funny.

The "vulgarity" was my least favorite part, it was just kind of overpowering, it didn't add anything to the movie and did nothing but annoy me.

I've heard some reviewers complain about this but it was some of my favorite stuff going on when they were with McLovin.
Overall, a solid movie but most of it of it wasn't for me.
I could have watched a whole movie involving Fogell/McLovin and maybe some involvement with the cops (y)

I didn't really love the whole McLovin subplot, I was more interested in the main character's conversations. The McLovin thing seemed a little TOO typical geeky kid for me.

the funniest part was the drawing dicks thing. Ive met kids who did that shit! I always just assumed it was just the occasional weird kid thing but now I suspect that its more commonplace.

I could buy McLovin, for the most part. The cops, though... it was kind of the equivalent of having the stereotypical dumber-than-kindergarteners parents stumble out for laffs now and again.
SEMI-HARMLESS SUBPLOT SPOILERS
Like, my suspension of disbelief is doing just fine until you have bumbling cops Barney Fife-ing their way through their rounds, destroying their own police car like six year olds, etc. etc. etc., then, at the end, they're all wise to McLovin after all, blah blah blah. It's really just policemen-as-minstrel show, you know? I totally believe there are incompetent police out there, and I know police can be pretty funny. But this isn't how. So pretty much whenever more police-ruckus was going on, it was like a good Wayans brother movie -- as bad as that still is -- was being grafted in, interrupting a genuinely good movie I cared about.
A subplot should always be really strong, so the audience doesn't get restless to get back to the "main" action. So I'd have to ask -- would anybody want to see a movie about these two cops? I'm betting "no." Does anyone want to see a movie about the three main guys again? I'm betting it's anywhere from "maybe" to "heck yeah."
Those two cents, there? -- those're mine.

The only part I really liked was the part where the cops and McLovin are shooting at signs and they hear a siren and the one cop from SNL yells "OH SHIT! THE COPS!"
That's about it.

I was so ready for a good laugh, too?! :(
There weren't even enough fart or sex jokes to raise this to a Fast Times, Porky's, or American Pie coming of age level. Though the two 16 year olds in front of us did squeal with delight at the barf scene. Maybe I've had too much reality to find it that funny?
The penis drawings were interesting, at least.

I actually just wrote a review about this movie for my university newspaper. I compared it to American Pie. It's quite similar but the jokes go a little further.

The McLovin/cops part was my favorite.

Wow, when I described it to a friend I used American Pie as an example of what this isnt, in a good way.
I was saying that there wasnt lots of huge "LOL" moments, like pie fucking, but there was tons of little laughs.

I thought it was really funny..just genuinely funny. Plus, it got appropriately touching without being super cheesey. It was very much like Dazed and Confused..more than just being set in one night, but it also balanced the good times with the agro that happens on such nights.
The end was pure hollywood...but still believable....
as well as of course Martin Starr and others).
Holy shit...Bill Haverchuck was in it? Who was he? I cant believe i missed him!
