Dear Beastie Boys:
I thought it was a bit of a curious choice to play Toronto on the holiest days of the year in the Jewish calendar, Sept 21-22st, Yom Kippur. I (apparently like you guys) do not attend synagogue even on the holiest day of the year. So I was really excited about the concert regardless. I'll be there whooping it up just like I have been for every show in Toronto since the 1985 Madonna opening gig at Maple Leaf Gardens. However some of my friends will not be able to attend.
The service that takes place at the same time as the concert is Kol Nedrei. In my earlier years - when not going to synangogue was not an option - I attended many services. This one is particularly unique and beautiful because of the beautiful piece of music that accompanies the main prayer "Kol Nedrei". At my synagogue it was always performed as a solo cello piece and somehow it was so powerful that I could almost understand it better than most of the hebrew prayers. I am often reminded of it when I hear Eugene's Lament. Maybe you could ask him to come to Toronto? Ask him if he can play "Kol Nedrei"? He could be booked for that night.
I did not find it curious at all that once you were coming to Toronto for Yom Kippur you might as well do a Gala show the following night at Hummingbird. In fact I was even more excited about this show. I have several friends who are not able to attend the ACC show due to family commitments or religious ones. They were all very excited to be able to attend a Gala the following night even if they have to leave their family "breaking the fast" dinners. While I do not attend synagogue and I do not "fast", I do attend the family functions surrounding the jewish holidays. My son is 5, so we see all the cousins, grandparents, etc. He still a little too young to attend his first Beastie Boys concert. (He loves CH-CH-CHeck it out - my brother was working at a music store and got us the "clean version" of the TT5B CD - thankfully because it was all we listened to in the car together. My brother will be in from NYC so he is also excited to attend both shows. My other brother is west coast, he attended Sasquatch but won't be in for the holidays.)
..dear Beastie Boys, if you have read this far here is the kicker...Unless you already have plans YOU ARE INVITED TO MY MOM'S HOUSE FOR BREAKING THE FAST dinner. It's like a buffet dairy thing with blintzes, salads, bagels, and schmear, cakes, etc. My mom knows that I have grown up with you guys since 85 so she said she always has room for more people (actually Mark and Mike are invited too, I would love to meet them.)
Let me know. Jeff Gorman
PS. My wife said she could organize transportation for you.
PPS. If not, I'll see you at the show, I'll be in my tux.
