So I had this realization tonight at the Wiltern show (8/21/07).... For the majority of my history in beastie fandom, I always felt that the bboys' strength, focus, and overall comfort zone lied in the recording realm. Their records were always so thick, calculated, and perfected; beautiful pieces of work, while the live shows (though dope as fuck in their own right) were on a much more raw, casual, "let it all hang out" type tip. As of late, though, I've realized that they've really shifted focus, whether it be intentional or unintentional, from session work to their stage set.

If you look at the evidence, the last couple albums have been (though solid and enjoyable) not particularly up to beastie par, while the last two tours have been notably off the fuckin' chain. I won't lie, i've only seen the beasties a handful of times, but from what I've gathered through listening to shows and reading long-term fan accounts, the last two tours have been distinctly fresh. Like I said, whether they're consciouos of it or not, I believe their really making an effort to bring their live shit up to the stature of their recorded catalogue.

I find that pretty cool. Does anyone else see this, or am I crazy?

BTW, the Wiltern Show blew my mind. Literally, I had to scrape my brains up off the cieling after the show (it was a pain in the ass). Epic.

Excellent question McDuff.

I've seen the Beasties multiple times on every tour with the exception of only seeing one LTI show.

During the CYH and IC days they just came out performed a helluva show. Raw and pure energy!

During HN they got creative with their "stage show" with lab coats, jumpsuits, In The Round, and adding MMM to freshen up the old songs.

During TT5B they then took it to a different level. Dog Show, Tracksuits, shoutout videos, costume changes mid-show, getting the audience involved in AIFST...

Now they've got the suits, hair, Gala Events, instrumental versions.

They just continue keep changing it up and having fun. That's what makes a Beastie show enjoyable to me. It's not so much the actual songs...I've heard them a million times. The fact that they are having fun and bringingthatto the performance. Plus...it's the mutha fuckin' Beastie Boys and they're in your errrrea.

Word! I could not agree more (even though I too am a bit late to the party in terms of seeing only the last few tours). The stuff their doing on tour now is some next level shit, The Brooklyn pool show and the Boston Gala had the same effect on my mind, luckily the doctors have given me a clean bill of health and cleared me get my mind blown the next time the beasties are all up in my eriahh! (was touch and go there for a while- I was a drooling mess that could only talk about how sick a beastie live show was, but I came through in the end!)
