MCA dedicated "Gratitude" to all their LA friends who have helped them along their career... Adrock called out Max Perlich in the audience and introduced Rickys Theme as a song about friendship and love. even though he was being melodramatic, the band seemed to be soaking up all the nostalgia...

these performances felt very retrospective and historical in a sense, for me at least...

there were plenty of instrumentals, including Sabrosa, POW, Futtermans Rule, In 3's (Im pretty sure), 14th Street Break, B For my Name, The Gala Event, Off The Grid, Electric Worm, Root Down & Get It , Lighten Up

as well as Song For The Man and Mark On the Bus

instrumental Sure Shot and So Whatcha Want, PJ's, Jimmy James, Remote Control, Do It

Tough Guy, Heart Attack, Time For Livin, Sabotage...

pretty mellow crowd, but I'm not complaining. they seemed to be soaking up what the band was giving them... I closed my eyes during Off The Grid and turned around and watched the crowd during Sabotage... a few dressed to impress audience members, including yours truly, were sprinkled around the crowd, Mike D gave props for their efforts. MMM and Money Mark were interacting with the crowd when they were not featured performers...

Alfredo took an extended Cuica solo on Lighten Up and the crowd was giving him alot of love!

Gala Event was air conditioned and the theatre was beautiful... a small pit area was designated to those who put in the effort of arriving early enough to get a wristband, they cut off at 150 or 200, so there was plenty of room to move around and dance, as well as waitresses walking around the pit for drink orders... it was a well put together system and overall a nice relaxed concert experience...(y)

I got there around 7:30 and was able to make it down to the front. It seemed like there were as many people that had gone down there as there were that were staying back.

That was the craziest version of 3 mc's and one dj I've ever heard before.

Mike D's hair was combed down and slicked, like James Brown or Reverend Sharpton...it was wild! he gave props to his "hairdressing team"

Yauch told him to take the wig off and his response was "I cant do that my friend"

oh and PB Wolf was the opening DJ, as was mentioned in a previous thread

Yeah it was HOT cuz the Beastie Boys were on FI-AH!!!!

Before the show, as we're standing on the sidewalk, we spied Horovitz driving Yauch around the corner of the venue. We were all waving and they were just focused on traffic or something, it was cute. They almost looked lost!

I was more excited for this show than any show ever in my life. I've seen so many shows at the Wiltern and was in complete disbelief that these guys were going to be playing a Gala there. We got down in the lovliest pit with our little wristbands and just lemme say how LOVELY it is to be there, the Wiltern only lets the first so many folks down there and they do not over crowd it so yeah, even though I'z on the rail, I didn't have to hold on for dear life and could let go and dance and stuff. I def shook my rump throughout the entire set! Oh so most wonderful. Paul got a setlist so I'm sure he'll post it when he gets around to peeling his ass outta bed! :p

Highlights:

Hearing "The Gala Event" played live with the DISCO ball! MMM's scratching was sooo good in it and meh, I dunno, I'm just feelin' this song so much so hearing it live was oh sooooo nice.

Additional song highlights were "14th St. Break" and.... "SONG FOR THE MAN!" omgz

There were ample amts of people dressed to impress in the house. I was pleased many got the 'memo'

MIKE'S HAIR! He had such a special little comb over thing goin' on. I'm sure a pic will surface. It was so cute! I kept chuckling to myself at his hair. Oh and he rocked the mustard yellow plaid suit. Oh that Mikey's got his own thing goin on there. LOL @ Yauch, "Hey Mike! Take that wig off!"

Yauch had such a nice happy, laid-back, disposition for this show, he really did. Watching his hands on the upright during Shambala is mezmerizing I tell you. Before leavin the stage, Mark pointed out a dude in the upper tier wearing some sort of pimp lookin coat at which point, Yauch paused, smiled, approached the mic and called the guy 'king tut' or something?

There were many shout-outs from the band to their LA friends which included Max Perlich. Additionally there was a funky shout-out from Horovitz that went something like, "A lot of people are talking about you and ... it's not good" ????? hmmmmm.....

Mike did this special little dub/rap thingy I doubt I've heard before complete with his funky lil dance thing he does. Then Horovitz starts trying to mimic his dance steps. *shakes head* trust me it was cute, maybe ya just had to be there. He also initiated this Bong Bong Bing Bing that him and Horovitz do!

I noticed that the techs before Sabotage bring out a different keyboard for Mark to trash, it's like his beater-keyboard that he can just throw around the stage like he does. Mhm! I love how Mark just goes OFF, esp during the hardcore songs.

Oh and Fredo did this extended thing on "Lighten Up" on that one instrument that I could've always sworn was a straw in a McDonald's cup moving up and down. It was rad. Him and Mike at one point were like drumming together and they were spot on with one another, that shit was TIGHT!

I mean these recollections are merely scratching the surface as to why last night will forever go down in my "Best Shows EVER" category.

Lastly... Horovitz, I mean what to say?! The man's perfection. You can tell he loves doing the Gala shows. When he starts shreddin on that guitar during the hardcore cuts - sigh... I love how he comes out on stage and goes from the most beautiful smile to that lil snarl and back to smiling again... He was in his green shirt with a drum tie clip and dark green suit and just so tailored. OK, I better stop or I will go on for 3 more disgusting paragraphs as to why he seals the deal on Beastie Boys highlights. :o

Lowlights:

The band leaving the stage after Sabotage.

I pray to GOD that this show's audio was recorded. The world NEEDS it.

Oh I forgot to mention... there were signs up at the entry for the performance saying "tonight's performance is being taped"......... omg are we going to get a mix-up video out of this or what? There was also some dude out front before the show with what appeared to be Yauch's lil old skool video recorder and a plastic 'I <3 NY' bag dressed in a suit a-la Beastie Boy. He def looked like he was on a mission of some sort.

I noticed that there were mics pointed out towards the audience. Thats something thats done sometimes to capture the ambient sound of an audience on a live recording.

Ooh, thanks for the heads up on that. The Warfield in SF also has a few different pit sections, so I can see them doing something similar.

Ya, this show was really great. Futterman's Rule was sick as fuck, the bass was just in your bass, and it was like that for alot of the night...The Gala Event was really extra awesome cause I have never heard it live and the disco ball coming down, and MMMs scratching REALLY added to it. The setlist was not predictable....my beef with 3MCs was that if you were going to do 1 regular rap song in a show, i wouldnt have picked that one... it was delivered great, but you know... a non single i think woulda been more exciting...but the boys were ON FIRE as Jenny says...

I didnt want to say anything in fear that i'd sound stupid, but i really did get the feeling that this show was being taped. From the enthusiasm to Mike's hair, to the setlist, etc.... It sure would be the one to tape, it was a magnificent show.

I think they do 3MCs so MMM has an opportunity to do something relevant during the show.

I decided Lighten Up, Mark On The Bus, and Song For The Man were my favorite performances of the night...

Alfredo and Mike D really are in sync on the drums/percussion. I really enjoy how seamless they make the transitions- Fredo shreds on the hardcore songs while Mike sings, and then on the instrumentals they are in perfect harmony together on their skins...

I take it you weren't at the show. MMM was a fairly busy man throughout.

I think they do 3 MCs because the Beasties enjoy striking their poses.

I'm glad that they figured out how to work MMM into the gala shows. It wasn't completely successful two months ago. I admire all the effort they're making.

that is an amazing pic! classic shot of the way fans capture shows.

also this is hilarious:

Oh and Fredo did this extended thing on "Lighten Up" on that one instrument that I could've always sworn was a straw in a McDonald's cup moving up and down.

I just think it's funny you say that b/c I totally do "lighten up" in my head whenever i'm playing with a straw in a fountain drink.

Gala Event was my fave in NYC too. Something about the way that song teases & builds and uses every member of the band so well . . . it just kills live. can't wait for the riv....

I think the highlight for me was when the played jimmy james. It took me a second to realize they were playing the song live on they're instruments even though I knew it was a gala event. I wasn't expecting that. I think they pulled it off well. Thanks for posting those pictures.

i keep thinking about the crew that was filming outside the venue, the sign posting that the event was taped, and the jazz cat walking around with a Super 8 camera getting footage of the venue outside the show....

theres definitely something in the works at Oscilloscope, but it is too hard to tell...

here are my theories...

I'm thinking the footage from the Wiltern might be for the extended Mix Up concept film, while the Chicago and Detroit tapings will be a separate, live DVD project. combine that with the basketball documentary Yauch is working on, as well as returning to the studio for a vocal version of Mix Up and possibly a new album altogether, the boys at Oscilloscope are going to be very busy for the next year and a half as adrock put it...

another sweatshop on Canal Street!
