I've been trying to figure out the samples in the chorus of "the scoop."

Beasties annotated has the lyrics
*Check it*
*Better believe it y'all*
*tick tock... work out*
*Better believe it y'all*
*This is rough and tough*

I've also seen this slightly altered on another website:
*Check it*
*Better believe it y'all*
*tick tock... work out*
*Better believe it y'all*
*This is Ralph and Tom*

The thing I am most interested in is the *this is rough and tough* or *this is Ralph and Tom* part.

Anyone have any clues?

That was always my favorite song on Ill Comm, but the line is "this is rough and tough".

"tick tock... work out?" I could've sworn the sample was saying "smooth playah... smooth playah."

Thanks. I found that beastiemania website as I was trying to figure out the samples and have listened to all of the songs. Unfortunately these songs don't contain the samples for the chorus.

I agree with you that it is rough and tough not Ralph and Tom

Yeah, I don't have any idea where the 'tick tock...work out' comes from. Sounds like 'smooth playa....smooth playah' to me

I think "The Scoop" and "Alright, Now Here This" are the two illest beats on that record, not to mention two of the most underrated bboys songs ever. The lyrics on "The Scoop" are a little mediocre (doo doo free), but on the strength of the beat and off-the-wall vocal effects alone, this song is an absolute banger!

Still haven't figured out the source of *this is rough and tough* so if anyone knows please clue me in. Thanks.

are there more versions of it?? like Can't won't don't stop (HN) ?

the thing I'd like to know is what's that distorted silent talk at the end? ...transmission... something

Word up. I've always wondered that as well. Either way, it's dope as fuck.

Ahem? There are alternate versions of Grasshopper Unit circulating!?! Never got the memo apparently over here. Should I be looking on the hub for this gem, or what?

the difference is just on the chorus, I think. there's two or three versions, can someone confirm this?

*can't can't won't won't stop* voice of the BBoys being scratched in

*Well can't won't don't stop rockin' to the rhythm
'Cause I get down 'Cause I get down* being said by Biz Markie

*keep it on and on 2000* BBoys voice - haven't heard that one, but that's how it goes on the acapella on this site

Annotated Ill Communication didn't have an answer either, but they did have some notes on what some of the lyrics mean....

I have a standard release with 'can't won't don't stop, rockin to the rythm..'
The scratchin' version I don't know on what release it was
maybe the 'keep it on & on 2000' is the recorded acapella but got cut out of the album version(s) of the song

Yeah, there is the "The Grasshopper Unit" and "Can't, Won't And Don't Stop"...

The "Can't, Won't And Don't Stop" is on the import.

I belived they changed up the chorus part due to The Freestylers had a song out at the same time that used the same sample "Can't, Won't And Don't Stop" did.

So, late in the game they changed the chorus... I prefer the OG version.

I've been wondering what that sample was saying for years. That sounds about right. I always thought the second part he says something like "the true playa".

The "can't stop won't stop rock to the rythm" thing was a sample clearance issue. That was the original version called "Can't Stop Won't Stop". They couldn't get the Grandmaster Flash sample cleared for the U.S. so they changed the chorus for the U.S. version. On the U.S version the beasties just shout the chorus "can't . . . won't . . . etc." and it's labeled as "The Grasshopper Unit" on the album. If you live in the U.K. (or elsewhere) you got the original version. If you live in the U.S. you got the other version. I rember there being so much vibration on that cut that the orange vinyl would jump your needle off of the record player.

A similar thing happened on Ill Communication with the french lady sample. It's not on the U.S. version of the album.

I had been listening to the original Can't Stop Won't Stop many years before I heard the US version and it never sounds right to me. It sounds like a butchered afterthought (which it actually is) and forced. I'm sad they had to alter the original and came up with something similar for the US version. I think they did an ok job but it's not even in the same universe as the original.
I think, if you prefer the US version it's only because you have always heard that one. So that's why it's the only real version for you...

I was disappointed to find out that every version of the remasted Hello Nasty features The Grasshopper Unit. So there are no remasted Hello Nasty with Can't Stop Won't Stop anywhere. There are only two problems I have with the Beastie Boys album catalog.
1: There are no remasted Hello Nasty with the real and original Can't Stop Won't Stop.
2: Jimmy James on Check Your Head doesn't have the original scrathes.

Anyone know if the hook on the acapella "keep it on and on 2000!" is on any versions of the song?

That French clip was on the leaked copy that was going around weeks before Ill Communication came out. I remember being real disappointed it was cut from the U.S. release.

I got it dubbed on cassette from a guy I knew who worked at a record shop back then. He knew I was a big Beastie fan and hooked me up with promo posters and stuff like that. He knew a guy at Capitol and got the tape from him. That's where I got my copy. It was like two weeks before the album dropped. I wish I had kept all those posters and things he gave me back then...

Same deal as Jay Stone said.
I don't remember how long before the album dropped I had it, but I think it was more than a couple of weeks. At least it was long enough to know the whole thing pretty well before I actually could go out and buy it. Which, given the level of my obsession then, could easily really only been a couple of weeks.
