I got my copy the TMU (Japanese Version) yesterday. It has the two bonus tracks "The Mix Up" and "Fibonacci Sequence", a Japanese spine cover (As most Japanese disks have but with some kind of pixilated-secret-code-like box (The kind you'd get a red decoder for in a cereal box, but this one is only in black and white. Honestly, I don't know what the hell it is.)), an insert in Japanese (I assume a translation of the English liner notes.), a sticker of the album cover (I assume the one that is hinted at in the store but as of yet doesn't have an image.)
The tracks are awesome. I especially like "The Mix Up". I was playing it at work and a friend, who is in Beastie overload with me and therefore (understandably) doesn't listen to me, said, "Who's this?" I told him and he said, "Oh, I like it. Aren't there any words on the album?" Anyhow, the new songs don't knock my socks off the way "Biscuits and Butter" did, but they're a funky/loungy beat and refreshing after listening to the rest of those joints all summer. Time to strike up the BBQ again.
What I'm wondering is are there any more videos to come? What happened to that shot of Horovitz on his knees next to the drum kit wtih the go-go girl in the white boots. Wasn't that supposed to be a shot of them shooting a video? Where's the Hard Day's Night like movie, yo? How's the vocal version coming?
I've come to the conclusion that this is just great BBQ/ambient/background music. Maybe I don't have the musical k-nowledge to appreciate the sound references, so that's what I'm left with. I like it fine for what it is (or what I'm hearing it as), but I'm really digging the interviews with the hard bent towards fashion (eg, the NTY Magazine article "Hello Natty"). A great supplement is Kanye's interview in the latest "Complex" magazine. If you're with me on the fashion thing, I suggest you ch-check it out.
