So, catching up on movie bidnezz news....I see that Johnny Depp is gonna revise the role of Hunter S in a film version of “The Rum Diaries”…..I don’t know, sounds sketchy…..the “Rum Diaries” was Hunter’s closest attempt to a "fiction" novel even though loosley based on a self imposed exile in Puerto Rico....and really not a very remarkable book at all....I guess financing and building that giant cannon, from which to shoot Hunter’s ashes out of at his wake, didn’t offer enough closure…..at least he's got Benicio Del Toro on board.....

actually this movie was in the works before Hunter passed.
I love The Rum Diary, it is actually one of my favorties. I'm hoping the project turns out great. and honestly Depp has HST down, so I'm glad he'll be revising his role.

Whenever I'm on a plane and someone's being a twit (more and more rarely,of course post 9/11) I alway's whimsically think about punching them in the throat cause of the Rum Diary's....I always thought that Benicio was the only strong redeeming feature of "Fear and Loathing"....I feel he REALLY upstaged Depps pretty damn solid charcature of Thompson ....have you read Ralph Steadmans(Illustrator of all the books) memoir on Hunter?....it's called "The Joke's Over" and is full of page turning revelations about the man and their relationship...lot's of art and photo's.....(y)
Agreed. I enjoyed it as well. I read that instead of listening to audio tapes when I had to log 50 hours at the French lab in college.

I have The Jokes Over but I haven't been able to sit down and read it yet. I look forward to quieter times when I can.
regardless of what you think of Depps portrayal of Hunter, the thing is, Hunter was happy with how Depp played him. Depp lived in Hunters basement for something like 6 months or so to prepare for the role. They became very close. I think thers's always going to be some exaggeration when briinging a real person to the big screen, but hunter expressed his satisfation with how Depp did it so ya know, what better seal of approval can you get than that?

yeah, their relationship is well documented in the "Joke's Over",he spent a similar amount of time with Bill Murray when he took him on in "Where the Buffalo Roam" and they also remained in touch/friends up until Hunter shot himself.....while on the phone, talking to his wife....so meger......I guess if you look at Depps take on the role it complimented Terry Gilliams manaical direction style on the flick....where as Murray's was toned down a few notches......did you know that Lazlo's character in "faer and Loathing" was actually based on Steadman not lazlo himself....2 bits 4 ya....;)

I listened to Rum Diaries on audio tape. painfully boring. I loved Fear&loathing so maybe they can save it.
