i have saved enough money to move to australia this fall. i'm thinking about staying until it's summer here again, may or june that is.

this is my great plan since last winter. i won't survive another one. i'll start with sydney and see what happens from there.

fuckin plane tickets are like 1800 USD. that's the major expense.

I don't really mind hot or cold weather. It's humidity that drives me mental. I am off to a wedding next year back in Hong Kong and probably will go to Thailand or Vietman on the way for a week and am dreading the humidity

Sydney is the gay capital of Australia.

I know. That was my idea.

the cheapest flights from australia to scandanavia are to copenhagen, so i'd assume it'd be the same the other way around. so look into that

brisbane weather is still bullshit, it may reach 25 in the day but it's still too fucking cold

Tompz

i'll apply for a working holday visa, work some, travel the continent and meet some cool people

i need a serious break from my life here, since nothing interesting has been happening for ages

Tompz you sound exactly like me, man. I'm from Canada and the winters here are just as savage and unforgiving, and I too am determined not to suffer through another one. So I'm working six days a week trying to save for my working holiday visa/plane ticket to Oz. With any luck I'll be on target to get the fuck out of here by December when the real horror of winter descends mercilessly upon this barren, empty, desolate wasteland.

Yeah, this summer has been bullshit in Seattle too. Lots of gray days, not a lot of sun. But my whole life is here, all of my friends, my family. I dont think I'll move so I guess I'll have to content myself with trips to Vegas every so often.

It's never, ever actually cold in Perth. And at least you can put more clothes on when it's cold. You can't do anything about the oppressive, fly-attracting heat. /reptile

from wikipedia
In the United States the Fahrenheit system continues to be the accepted standard for non-scientific use. All other countries have adopted Celsius as the primary scale in use. Fahrenheit is sometimes used by older generations in English speaking countries, especially for measurement of higher temperatures.

So I guess yup only the U.S. Reading about how it came about really makes the whole scale seem ridiculous.

that's a load of shit. how many layers before it becomes ridiculous? how am i supposed to go about my daily rituals wearing a bulky jacket??

at least in summer i can sit in my air conditioned house/office all day.

the us has the NYC/LA rivalry going on and maybe a bit of the north south thing. but you never see any of the other nationalities including the US talking shit about one another because they come from different cities. i would imagine your sports rivalries being pretty damn vicious.

Kid Presentable
08-30-2007, 09:35 AM
I mean, we learned racism off America. We also have a sporting code here (AFL) that has no world cup, and people get all worked up and passionate about 'their' teams, and angry at fans of other teams. It's hilarious.

To be honest though, I found the football nutters in England a bit dodgier. Although we have Rugby League players here, but they just rape more than they fight.

TurdBerglar
08-30-2007, 09:39 AM
the racism here doesn't seem nearly as bad as it is over there. and why does everyone hate perth? i can understand why everyone would hate tasmania. it's the equivalant of our alaska. just full of hicks. but what's so bad about perth? perth seems to be attacked almost as much as tasmania.

Kid Presentable
08-30-2007, 09:42 AM
I hate Perth for as many reasons as I like it. It's just one of those things.

And yes, your country is racist as all fuck. And so is this one. And in New Zealand, everybody is so scared of being racist, they guiltily 'PC' everything.

What? They install Windows Vista? fnar fnar

there seems to be alot of racial things that happen in other countries that just don't happen here. there's not a lot of racism between person to person. there's much more in the politics/government and with the crazy religious people.

That's kinda interesting, cause where I am (and I'm keen to move to another suburb, no doubt) I encounter a lot of it on a personal level. A lot of white folk bitching about indigenous folk, and italians bitching about everybody. And an aboriginal dude said he'd "fuckin kill" me because I wouldn't go into the coolroom to find the booze he wanted. Called me a white piece of shit, and said he'd go to the discrimination authority. I suggested he might want to take it up with the ombudsman.

that's what im talking about. that seems to happen much more in other countries. it may have been like that up until the 60's/early 70's but that shit is not nearly as prominent as it seems elsewhere. the neighborhood that i live in is predominantly puerto rican and black. there's not really many problems when it comes to racial issues.

I get the feeling in America racism is re-packaged, and quite subversive. I dunno. Like it's beyond a day-to-day thing, and it's in the water. I gotta go study.

the racism here seems to be by the people that have control over things. not the ordinary people just doing their everday shit. the biggest form of racism i see here is between people from urban and suburban areas. and it's mostly based on not growing up around another and just completely misunderstanding one another. like the young suburban white kids that are at work look at one of the urban black guys that works there like he's insane. he's not insane he just isn't all stuck up and stuffy and says whatever is on his mind. he doesn't try to make himself more reserved in order to appeal to everyone. and that seems to be the biggest difference between the people. well atleast around here.

Yeah I don't see much rasicm on a daily level here. Hell my family is Asian black white hispanic... you name it an someone in my family has some in them. Although I do believe many people in other countries have a totally different view as to what the U.S. is really like. Just like I am sure I have different views about how other countries are. Oh well.

I think this is right on. Its there its just not explicit most of the time. Ahd there's a lot of pc and guilt-based resentment on both sides.

Around here the neighborhoods are still pretty stratified. I'm not sure why but the whites, blacks, asians and latinos live pretty separately. And there isn't a whole lot of mingling.
