Sorry if that title sounds a bit morbid?

A friend of mine once stayed at home to eat a pizza because he couldn't be bothered to go and see Desmond Dekker play locally that night.

Desmond Dekker died a week or so later and my friend had missed his last ever gig and was obviously gutted.

The popularity of Live Music seems to be on the rise, maybe to compensate for the difficulties the music industry is going through (you can't download the feeling of a great gig and real human interaction after all) and this has given me the opportunity to see some great gigs lately.

The Beasties aren't getting any younger but I hope there's a good couple of decades left in them yet - I once saw what I believe was the last ever Ramones gig in London UK and it's funny - someone pointed out that almost no sooner had they stopped gigging than they all started dying off! As if being a Ramone was there purpous for breathing or something?

I'm glad to have seen James Brown, Jam Master Jay and Big L perform and was lined up to go see Bo Diddley earlier this year - unfortunately he had a stroke about a week before the gig (I'm really not sure of his condition since but hope he's OK).

Performers aren't like paintings that can be traded for millions once they're gone.

Which artists would you like to see before they die?

i wouldn't mind seeing the stones, however the chances of me ever affording a ticket are slim to none.

and easy 3 - you want to see 60 year old men rapping on stage? or would they only play instrumentals?

everyone i can think of right now is either already dead or the band no longer exists.

Well based on their record I think the Beasties could re-invent themselves off to a ripe old age - who am I to limit their horizons?

Alternatively, according to the bboys track 'get busy' - they'll keep rapping even when they're in their coffins! - So at least they'll quit before the Stones eh?:D

But this thread is all about appreciating artists regardless of their age to some extent - hip-hop is still a reasonably new thing in many ways, and I'm not really interested in seeing my heroes clown themselves by struggling to stay hip or relevant. But I am interested in artists while they're still decent - and still around. Long live the Beasties (and after seeing that Public Enemy 'harder than you think' video today, long live Chuck and Flav!) - look at Johnny Cash - the best may be yet to come for some? I'm loving how many kids I come across whose favourite Bboys stuff is Intergalactic and Triple Trouble - they don't worry about a few grey hairs, they just love the humour and style. Plus they've got the whole back-catalogue to look forward to!

I can't remember what interview I read (some rap guy) saying about how a lot of hip hop heroes aren't going to be here forever - a lot of them smoked loads of blunts, and dust, and drank 40s, and.....look at Ol' Dirty!

I'm just enjoying the here and now and checking out some good shows by artists that make the effort to deliver the goods well.

(man I'm doing some long-arsed posts recently - I've got way too much time on my hands!):o
