Everyone knows how under-appreciated this album was by the mainstream when it dropped back in '89. It was often affectionatly labeled as "ahead of it's time" by critics and fans.

It seems this masterpiece is finally being discovered by the masses. Just this weekend I've heard it being blasted in from someone's car and today when I went to the mall, the kids working in the video game store had it playing over the store's radio.

I've also seen it named on several "Top albums of all time" type lists. I think someone linked and MTV list and I saw something Chris Rock wrote about it being one of his top albums.

Maybe it's just my overly-tuned Beastie ear hearing it, but I just wanted to give you kids bumpin' it kudos on your good taste.

Anyone else notice a resurgence in popularity?

Funny you should ask. I went to Brooklyn just a couple of days ago, and heard PB being played in a little bar. This seemed like such a rarity to me that I had to change my plans and run in for a cocktail. But, this was Brooklyn, so maybe this doesn't counts?!?!

i think it's as close as it will get, in that the masses generally don't care about it.

I don't know, it seems like it's really found it's niche with this "Hipster-Emo" generation.

and I generally don't think of it as an '80's album.
I know it sounds like a cliche, but it really is kind of timeless.

They took 70's funk samples, layering them using turntablism styles that became popular in the 90's, all while doing 80's style rapping over it.
It's all over the map.

One word: original.

can never be done again. That's as good as it gets. It's like when Kubrick made Dr. Stranglove. It's just magic. And my dog likes ice cubes.
