I see that nobody wants to touch this one.
It's not like, laugh out loud funny, but it's pretty accurate satire.

that was disturbing... is this making any controversial news rounds yet?

not cool on the Onion News Network's part...

That one had trouble written all over it. I didn't find it necessarily offensive, but then it isn't even really funny. It's in bad taste without any kind of wit or subtlety to make up for it.

I actually laughed out loud. And I've

Oh, I don't know. I didn't find it LOL funny, but I did think it was pretty sharp satire; a really succinct comment on how the mainstream news outlets 'report' these kind of stories to maximise the shock value in order to raise their own ratings. (And really, that is what people should be offended by.)

I saw the headline this morning and it did give me pause, but not offense, exactly. I'm sure part of that is being on The Onion's website; you'd almost have to not know what the Onion is to be offended by something you read there, I think.

I didn't read the story, though. The headlines that are more witty are more inviting to me, I guess. Maybe the story's angle is a media perspective, like Peachy said, but the headline itself kind of struck me as "here's what the whole town's thinking" kind of thing.

...for what it's worth, obviously.

satire or not, you know for sure there's some people that can't grasp that fact because of someone in their family being raped or they just can't take a joke.

Honestly, I didn't find it too amusing except for the "probably a memoriam" part.

wait...sorry, I'm unfamiliar with how the onion does things...is this based on a real missing person's case? if so, then yeah I think it's in poor taste.

But if that's not a real missing girl and it's entirely made up for the satire then...it's still not that funny, but it is decent satire of the media.

With The Onion, it could kinda go either way. Like, it wouldn't be impossible to imagine them doing a mining cave-in story right now, but it would be some mine other than one of the more current stories. Probably.

I don't know if anything is officially off limits at The Onion, but it seems like they've got some sort of editorial restriction. They're not relentlessly tasteless, I don't think.

I love The Onion; it's made me LOL countless times before and I'm sure it will again. Probably tomorrow. That's part of why this piece is a real letdown. I mean compare it to their September 11th coverage, which was tactful, poignant, genuinely funny, and levels above this sort of drawn-out hit-you-over-the-head poke at personal tragedy.

Ah well, nobody's got a perfect record.

Well, that can be true of lots of things, though. Humour, esp satire can often be used as a way to push people out of their comfort zones. Yes, someone whose family member has been missing/raped etc, will likely feel the sting of this a bit more sharply, but the alternative is to go in the direction of everything being uber-pc and never run the risk of offending anyone.

Honestly, I didn't find it too amusing except for the "probably a memoriam" part.

My feeling is it wasn't meant to be amusing in the sense of being titillating; I think it was meant to be rather biting.

I laughed. I thought it would've been funnier if "the missing girl" walked into frame at the end like she was just coming home from class or something.

I've eaten omelettes that were less over-egged than that "joke".

It wasn't offensive, just plain shite.

Wolfgang Van Halen judo kicked the newsstand clerk and pot stickers hit the floor. that guy that likes to throw glitter laughed and Tony Danza sang his interpretation of Quad City DJ's "Come on Ride the Train" and Clint Eastwoods monkey from that movie where he was a truck driver arm wrestled Gob Bluth. Gob Won and Cheers were abound. An Elephant picked up a hotgod stand and threw it towards the freeway then laid a turd. Coach gave everyone a round of drinks

Then that's when it got weird.

Accept played a polka version of Balls to the Wall
A crowd sang in unison that Journey sucked. A riot broke out at first over the news of war in Iowa declaring independence then went full scale when the t a journalistic integrity of Kurt Loder was questioned. At some point someone announced that the moon landing was propaganda. Blue Oyster Cult started playing Godzilla and a noodle stand lady cried tears of blood exclaiming that David Icke was right: George Bush was a Lizard Man. I did some coke with a midget and one of those people that wear white face but don't talk and that's when things spun out of control.

The moral to the story is if a midget offers you some blow~ Do it. Because who knows what can happen

I agree with the people who said it wasn't laugh out loud funny, but accurate satire on the media sensationalizing stories. as Al Franken said, the media has neither a liberal or conservative bias. It has a make money and attract viewers bias. putting a probably raped spin on a story of a missing girl is going to attract more attention, and the onion satire isn't far off from reality. especially in regards to prickettes like nancy grace. not the funniest thing in the world, but i'm willing to say that the people who said it's "pure shite" or "lacking any wit" are simply just really stupid. Like freebasser. What a retard, right? fuck you, freebasser.

I love the Onion. I think it's funnier in print though.

I eat lunch at a place where they distribute the Onion. I can't tell you how often I'm eating when a headline catches my eye and I laugh out loud and have to explain to my lunchmates.

This is probably my favorite Onion headline. (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/39180)

There's no doubt that it's offensive, so is most satire. That shouldn't be the question here. The question is, is it funny? Cuz no matter how offensive or shocking something is, if people laugh the comedian gets away with it.

I remember some guy made a joke about Princess Diana just a few days after her death: "I went to see the Princess Diana memorial fountain yesterday. It's a fitting tribute- it's shallow and it keeps breaking down." There was silence for a few seconds, a few "oooooh"s, but then (luckily for the guy) the audience started laughing.

Joan Rivers also made that famous joke about 9/11, as I recall it was the first joke about it to be televised in America. I think it was to do with the people getting millions of dollars compensation AND getting rid of their husbands being lucky bastards or something.

Anyway, these jokes are OK because people laughed at them, no matter how offensive or heartless they could be interpreted as being. The missing girl joke here is probably less offensive than either of these jokes, but just isn't funny, so I would conclude that they don't get away with it and are stupid cunts.
