View Full Version : A testament to just how anal retentive about music I am...Soft Cells Tainted Love

okay this is going to drive me fucking insane.
The version clocking at 2 odd some minutes which can be readily downloaded anywhere on internet is the pretty typical everyone knows it version but theres a ever so slightly different mix I used to have a couple years back.
While the song initally starts off almost instantly with the wish-wish-wish-wish-wish-wah-wah sound after maybe two seconds in theres either an alternate take or a remix that was done where the intro is extended out further with just a single high pitched synth strike for maybe 10 seconds, then the bass/breakbeat/whatever the fuck kind of kicks in. The radio single has it just kind of hovering in the background whereas the version Im thinking of its much more prominent and therefore more suitable for bobbing ones head to.
The closest thing I could find was this cheesedick video on youtube
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rTReBOL9qns
it sounds like theres an extra beat to it...Im fairly certain this version from the above video is the same Im thinking of but I cant say for certain because its missing the intro.
Album version: 2:33
7" version: 2:42
12" version: 8:59 (but that one is mixed with the the b-side from the 7")
The A-side of the 12 inch single of "Tainted Love" actually featured a two-song medley, with "Tainted Love" blending into the classic Motown hit "Where Did Our Love Go?" by The Supremes. At the peak of the song's popularity, many radio stations opted to play the full medley, utilizing their own edits to shorten the 9-minute track.

yeah I wikipedia'd it, and judging by the video I posted it appears it was re-filmed at some point in the late 90s or 2000s...which would indicate perhaps it was re-recorded?
I dont know. Maybe Im the only one picky enough to hear the difference but to me its huge.
At first I was very confused by the video the you posted, since that's the one I've seen for as far as I can remember. Then I saw the original and went "ah yes, that one". I had totally forgotten about it.
After a very tiny bit of research I found that there's a "Tainted Love '91" released in 1991. So I'm guessing that might be the one.

Yeah, that's what used to play on local radio back when it was a hit. I disliked it but then I was such a huge Supremes fan.
The way modern radio stations cut things like this out is pretty annoying. It's like fading out 6 minutes into Freebird so that you can play some Outback Steakhouse commercials. (n)

Marc Almond - 12" Tainted love/where did our love go? '91 remix.
Don't say I never did anything for you. ;)
send me a copy of this once you find it plz.
There isn't a 91 remix of the original medley.
I think Marc himself would know. http://www.marcalmond.co.uk/manager/discog.htm
Anyway, I've sent him a zip file with all the different versions I could find.

TAL: You are amazing. I wish that I had a long-standing music question to ask you right now.
One of my pet peeves was when they used to play the radio version of Diana Ross's Ain't No Mountain High Enough and cut out the bridge and lots of the speaking intro. It was simply butchered for radio.

If you scroll down to the July 30th "The Devil Has The Best Tuna" entry and click listen there is a version of Soft Cell doing an extended mix with extra synthesizer on the mix....It may be way over the top of what your remembering, but a great mix non the less. Give it a listen.

I dunno I looked it up on iTunes and found a 91' remixes album by the dude but the online version didn't have the tainted love 1991 12" version.
Ah well it seems you're the musical elite so I'll back off now...

This has to be the collectively the most time a group of people have dedicated to Soft Cell in the past 20 years.
The version I have is 2:42, and came from a compilation called Like OMG it's the 80's.
