View Full Version : Got back into Fugazi recently

It's hilarious, in a completely serious way.
I just got Repeater and In on the Kill Taker again. I listened to them a lot through 5th and 6th form. Memories of being too young/corny to do anything cool come flooding back. But the music is farkin great to hear again. So, so good. I might look into getting Red Medicine onwards.

Such a wallop-load of integrity that Mackaye fellow. This is great.

Red Medicine is quality.

Yeah I remember thinking it was a bit arty, but I'd probably like it now. Just got another copy of 13 songs. Slowly rebuilding that pile. Suggestion ftw.

Sorry about the bump, but I didn't want to make a new thread.
I got into Fugazi over the last few months. For the first time, because I'm 19 and didn't know about them when they were new. I got into Minor Threat like a year ago and then somehow found out Ian MacKaye is in Fugazi so I looked into them a bit and got hooked by "Blueprint" on the 20 Years of Dischord boxset that I decided to buy. I ended up buying Repeater and it totally blew me away. I ordered 13 Songs, In on The Kill Taker, and The Argument a couple months after that and really loved all of them as well. I just last week got Steady Diet of Nothing, Red Medicine, and End Hits in the mail.
Amazing band. Red Medicine and End Hits (and even In On the Kill Taker) are pretty arty and hard to get into, but I feel like I'm starting to get into them and the music is really strong. Repeater is still my favourite of the bunch. It's a bit more sophisticated than 13 Songs but it's still really rhythmic.
I plan on checking out The Evens, Embrace, Rights of Spring, and Joe Lally's solo stuff soon. I'm vaguely familiar with all of them, but the only Fugazi related band I actually listen to is Minor Threat.

Pretty much sums it up when you say "amazing band" because they are. Good for you. (y)

Just bought my first Fugazi album, their Seven Songs EP (12" vinyl). Came with a free MP3 download which is cool because I don't have the gear yet to do needledrops.* Here's a great video of them performing "Waiting Room" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGJFWirQ3ks) back in '88.
I like this album a lot.
Btw when I downloaded the MP3s there were two free "thank you" tracks by Egg Hunt, another MacKaye project, added to my account. Even before that I liked their Dischord's (their label) attitude as far as pricing: they actually seem to know what the word "fair" and "good value" mean. Wow.
* what a lot of home audio gearheads call a CD-R or other digital-based version of a vinyl album

Recently ran into a bunch of mp3's I had of theirs, didn't give them a proper listen yet but I liked what I heard so far.
FunkyHiFi, are you eyeing any particular equipment to do "needledrops" with?
I'm getting a new amp next week and it doesn't have a phono stage (home built tube amp). I saw that NAD has phono amps that include a USB port to allow direct transfers from vinyl (or any other analogue source) to digital.
I'm in doubt whether to go for that or to go for a more 'high end' phono stage and hook it up directly to an external soundcard.
Heh, might start a new thread for this...

Fugazi is great spring weather, brings back memories of H.S. and blasting them out of my car the first chance I could roll down my windows.
13 songs, Steady diet, In on the Kill Taker, Red Medicine all great
check out Instrument for something different

Heh, might start a new thread for this...A phono stage with a USB port? I've never seen one of those - that sounds like a good idea. (y)
As far as what I've been looking at, first I want to buy a good (but not super expensive, around $150 I guess) sound card, or external stand-alone sound processor if that's easier to deal with. There's so many different cards I am not sure yet which to buy! :(
I already have a turntable and a receiver with a true phono input and I can use its tape monitor outputs to send the table's signal to the sound card. But based on what I've read over the years, while many receiver's and integrated amp's phono sections can sound pretty good, usually a standalone phono preamp will sound better and since I'm sort of a sound snob :D I'm willing to pay for that extra quality (and anyway, these needledrops will take a lot of time to do, so why not make sure they sound good as I can afford?).
I want to make CD-Rs for the various players I own; MP3 or FLAC files for my flashdrive for my car player and any buddys that own audio gear with a USB port; and for really high resolution playback, the 96kHz/24bit PCM format in file form and on dvd (except for the very cheapest models, all dvd players I know of can play 96/24 PCM without converting it to the lower res 48kHz format).
I found this thread yesterday over at an audio forum and am keeping an eye on it: ""Needledrops for Dummies"? :)" (http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?t=213244&highlight=sound+card)

This (http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi-amplifiers/PP-3-Digital-Phono-Preamplifier) is the phono stage with USB I was talking about.
I'm in doubt whether to get this one or go for a second hand Lehman Black Cube (which I've found for 300 euro second hand, it's around 600 if you get a new one). The NAD is 150 new.
Decisions decisions... :)

^ that looks good!
I'm glad it includes an infrasonic filter (also called a rumble or subsonic filter) to get rid of the extreme low frequency stuff that a lot of warped vinyl has, or the noise from certain types of turntables with not-so-great platter bearings. That can help keep woofers from being overloaded and possibly damaged - for warped vinyl you can see this in the form of the woofer cone slowly pulsing in & out, sometimes alarmingly so.

^ I'm going to be buying some of my next Fugazi albums directly from Dischord and I'm thinking that album will be one of them. The other ones will be from one of the two music stores I visit, real ones you walk into and where can talk to other human beings! ;) :)
BTW here's a 18 sec video someone at another forum put up to show how crummy some *new* vinyl can be and a good reason to use one of those subsonic filters to help keep that stuff from reaching your speakers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ginMWkuzr2E
wump wump wump wump......scary!
