i remember reading about Yauch writing/directing this graffiti film "of toys and kings" (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=66712)

MCA also discussed his film project entitled 'Of Toys And Kings' which is on ice after he failed to raise the initial funds to make the movie .

"It was a film about graffiti writers in the early eighties, and I was working on it and to be totally honest I was having trouble raising the money to do because I was trying to do it without any famous people. It was an expensive project and it's not a very good equation to try to have five million dollar budget and no movie stars, so I put it down for a while.

then i found this (http://209.85.135.104/search?q=cache:6RmD2kJXhDAJ:www.risemag.com/elite24/pdfs/Boost_3Year1.pdf&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us) and this (http://www.risemag.com/main.cfm?actionId=globalShowStaticContent&screenKey=InTheMag&articleID=6908&categoryKey=Elite24) today!!

Opting not to broadcast last year’s event, the inaugural Elite 24 Hoops Classic is the subject of a forthcoming documentary from Oscilloscope, the production company of Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. The documentary covers the game and the surrounding events including the players’ participation in Boost Mobile’s RockCorps, the brand’s community service effort.

If the players feel like someone is watching their every move this weekend, they aren't being paranoid. Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch is making a documentary on the Elite 24 with his production company, Oscilloscope, and filming everything from drills and scrimmages to post-practice parties.

In addition to their shots, Yauch outfitted the players with Logitech Pocket Video handheld recorders so each player could add his own personal footage. The appeal of chronicling the event, says Yauch, is easy to see.

"It's pretty amazing seeing these regular high school kids being groomed and trained to be these highly paid athletes," he said. "The trajectory in front of them is pretty amazing."

i hope this is correct info (http://www.tribecafilmfestival.org/news-features/news/Press_Release_Spotlight_Showcase_RestoredRedisccov ered.html) ;)

In its third and final feature film announcement, the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by American Express, today released the line-up for its
Spotlight, Showcase and Restored/Rediscovered sections along with its Special Events for the seventh annual Festival.
The Festival will take place April 23 – May 4, 2008 in Lower Manhattan.

Gunnin’ for That #1 Spot, directed by Adam Yauch (USA) - World Premiere, Documentary. Rucker Park. The mecca for all street basketball players.
In Beastie Boy Yauch’s super-energized and highly musical documentary, eight of the country’s top 24 high school players participate in the first
“Elite 24” tournament on the same court that helped turn Dr. J, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain into legends. An Oscilloscope Pictures
Release. Part of the Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival.

#1) They filmed this a long time ago, too late now

#2) Top 24 in the country is more than great high school basketball players. It's future millionaires. Big diff.

What is a "highly musical documentary"?

I'm a sucker for documentaries (obviously), but these sorts of
documentaries are my favorites. I can't stand the Ken Burns
ones with old photos and voiceovers even though I love military
history. I'm a little worried that it will be compared to Hoop
Dreams and that's an impossible standard to live up to, but the
stories in this area are rich ones and there shouldn't just be one
movie on the subject. (Years ago I read an interesting book
about basketball, kids, and Coney Island.)

I hope I'll have a chance to catch it in a theater, but if not
then at least I'll have Netflix.

The beauty of documentaries is that you're exposed to something
you didn't even know you could be interested in. And movies about
people who compete are especially interesting. It doesn't matter
whether they're good scrabble players, good spellers, good donkey
kong players, or good at sports. People trying to succeed at something
they're good are usually interesting subjects.

I'm sure this will be cool for basketball fans, but everything from the soundtrack on down reminds me of those generic looking street hoops dvds they put out of every other game up at Rucker Park. I was hoping for something a little more filmic even if it is set to air on ESPN. This even reminds me of that streetball series on MTV a while back, remember that one? Maybe the preview clips are misleading? I'll still check it out, no doubt.

What are the odds the next film they put out will be political?

interesting... we will see how close it is to the And1 Mixtape tour.

But those are street ballers, these are up and coming High School stars who are currently in the NCAA Final Four and on the verge of being drafted into the NBA. not to mention its the first all-star game of this type at Rucker. previously, it was the McDonald's All-American Classic that hyped up the best high school ballers in the nation.

so it's like Hoop Dreams vs. And1 Mixtape

this is from the ESPN interview with MCA that Yeti posted above...

I feel the music works well. I think the Jay-Z ["Lucifer," "My First Song"] and Biggie ["Hypnotize"] and Nas ["Made You Look," "Halftime"] stuff works really well. Then there's the Jimmy Smith track ["Root Down and Get It"] during Kyle [Singler's] profile, which was nice.

First the sightings. I was standing in line next to some b-ball freaks when Cey Adams came walking up; no car, no limo, no taxi. Wearing his black Beastie Boys baseball cap. Bobbito Garcia and four of the players were there too.

When I got in, I sat at a table in the lobby and in walks the permed out Mike D about three feet away from me. He kept checking his Blackberry, so I waited for an opportune moment, tapped him on the shoulder and asked, "Hey Mike, would you mind taking a discrete picture with me?" He said, "Discrete? Why not take an indiscrete one? How 'bout a flamboyant one?" I was trying to take a self-shot with an iPhone so, we're looking at the back of the phone where the lens is while I'm trying to push the "button" on the back and he says, "I don't even know where the camera is." I pointed said, "It's the little hole," and he was like, "It's all in the hole."

Yauch showed up a few minutes later but was buzzing around dealing with the press. Horovitz showed up last. Tamra Davis came with a friend, but I didn't see Dechen nor Freckles.

From the opening drone of the Oscilloscope logo, there was uproarious applause. Neal Usatin, their editor, got special attention from the audience too; apparently people know him and like him. The audience was interactive throughout applauding players, commentators and the like.

The film itself mixes lo-fi, almost VHS-like home footage, website screen shots (done with a fake operating system GUI), YouTube quality footage, lots of different kinds of fonts and colors, HD footage of the Rucker park game, lots of computer graphics, lots of fast-forward through NYC streets, lots of fisheye/bird's eye Manhattan footage (like OLNYC and AIFST), lots of rewound-let-me-see-that-again shots. There was very little footage from the personal cameras the players were given by Yauch. It does open with some footage by one of the players (I don't know which) that was like a home-made horror-like flick. The best footage in my opinion were fisheye long-shots from behind a goal showing incredible turn-overs, no-look passes and one incredible half-court shot on the buzzer. Some interviews were done right in the O-Scope lab (with the fake plant), some in the players homes, street courts, etc.

The soundtrack was great with at least one NEW incidental piece credited to the Beastie Boys (I can't remember the title; something about "bass"). Yauch addressed the music in a question about who chose it (he and Neal) where he confirmed that the boys recorded some atmospheric stuff for a few scenes. I was surprised that the overall sound of interviews was as lo-fi and noisy as they were, with evident shifts in quality.

The Q&A afterward was okay. The players definitely show their age in that they are poised and confident within the forum of the court and their coaches, but shy and less articulate on stage. There was the question of who chose the music (Yauch and Neil), why the buildings looked bent (fisheye lens mounted to the bottom the a helicopter), were individual players going to sign with the Kicks (if the check is nice), how Yauch got involved (his friend heads up the Elite 24 tourney), etc. Not too much to reveal here.

For now that's all I can remember.

A few more interesting things. I can't remember exactly, but I think it was Dante Green (or someone associated with him) who used the word "dramastically" in the movie as in "Dramastically Different". Now that's an obscure reference.

It was emphasized that online scouting services changed their rankings around simply to maintain interest in their websites. Wily fuckers.

I love how Rucker Park is credited as a star (albeit in a box on the poster). Hornblower, you old goat. You know I had that idea first and I've got "The Substance of Style" on my YouTube account where "Riviera Theater" is credited as a star to prove it. Unlike your outrageous claims that YOU had all the ideas for Star Wars. Pshaw.

I think that's it. This orange is squeezed dry.
