I picked some up from the supermarket because I thought I'd make a point of trying them even though I'd had them before.... only ever as mince in hamburgers though so it's not quite the same. It was a meaty meat. I enjoyed it, and will get it again. I'd even go as far to say it was better than beef. This sounds like a cooking thread, but what I really want to know is, is it socially acceptable to eat animals that are your national icon? Do americans eat eagles? Do Canadians eat bears? Do Chinese eat dragons? Indigenous people aside of course.
I say, if it tastes good, go for it.
I'm going to have to say bandicoot just for the novelty value of eating Crash Bandicoot, that annoying little fucker.

OK so bandicoots ARE just native Australian rodents.
And I have eaten salt water crocodile, and yes, it did taste like chicken.
Although just before I went to the resturant at the ''crocodile park'' i watched a crocodile ''feeding session'' and all they gave them was chickens.
You are what you eat right?
i think eating an eagle is probably a federal crime or something, but i bet there's some survivalist militias out in montana that do it pretty often

Since colonisation Australia has had in many areas, vast overpopulations of kangaroo, due to the expansion of grazing areas. Because of this, thousands are culled every year to satisfy the farmers. Who want the grass for their cows.
So we can eat them.
Is it better for an animal to be killed to be eaten, or is it equal to the animal being killed for no purpose at all?

theres never too much animals, just too much humans
humans are widen out like a disease and leave no space for the real owners of those places but yeah killing animals is always the easiest option..it's called the native american style
you people should only eat the meat of animals who got hit by cars, since theres enough of it
maybe i should eat some of my babies when i get like 10 at once

There can actually be too much animals, in many places and situations. I'm sure you know that they earth is a delicate ecosystem in which everything in intricatley related, and due to this, over population of any species can and does have adverse impacts on other species. This is largley caused by domination of food supplies and habitats.
I get what you're saying about killing the kangaroos to make room for the cows though, I was trying to be ironic, because actually the kangaroo meat from the culls isn't even for human consumption I don't think, most of them get skinned and the rest goes for dog food or straight to pits. The kangaroo meat you buy in the supermarket is farmed specifically for that purpose just like any other meat you buy there.
Still as a meat eater, I think it's just a western cultural thing that we (other meat eaters) in general have a distaste towards any meat that hasn't been part of traditional animal agriculture such as pig, lamb,

if theres too much of some type of animals then only cause you ate all the animals who were supossed to eat those animals
i think there would be a better balance without humans
yeah im a hippie for animals

Are you some sort of vegetarian or something?
Over population of animal specials doesn't always, although does in most cases, come from human influence/impact. As you know many species were extinct well before humans even came into existence. Perhaps they became extinct as part of some sort of natural selection process? Other animals out evolved them and therefore had the most propensity to survive? It could be all part of evolution - and Darwinism. In which case, perhaps us eating animals and destroying hundreds of other species in order to do so is also part of the natural selection process. You never now, humans destroying most if not all life on earth could quite possibly be the destiny, if not, the eternal and infinite destiny, of evolution. Earth will never die. Life as we know it, most certainly will.

I am actually as big a misanthropist as you, I just happen to be one that eats meat. Occasionally. But not like dolphins and stuff, that would be wrong.

Well Tasmania had the tiger, which apparently at some stage was on the mainland too...although not when the brits arrived. But other than that no others than those you mentioned except sharks which obviously aren't land predators. Still, there aren't any introduced predators to Australia that are bigger than the kangaroo anyway, at least like the big red kangaroos, considering they can stand like 2m+.
There's an uban myth that there's a few black panthas about. But no one REALLY knows for sure.
But that's kind of irrelevant since as I said the overpopulation of kangaroos isn't a result of lack or natural predators but rather the expanse of agricultural grass land which results in an over abundance of their food. When animals are full, they fuck. Apparently.

I was totally saying the exact same thing to my Mum last night.
There are some pretty remote areas in Tas where they could be hanging out, although you'd think someone would have spotted it by now since it's been like 50 years or something since the last one died.

I totally forgot about the dingo. Man that sucks. I'm pretty sure dingos can't take down a red kangaroo. One foot to the face and they'd be fucked. And they don't hunt in packs either cause they're not lions.
Dingos only really kill babies.
And occasionally small children.

Yeah pretty much. You're probably completely right. I just had that in my head for some reason, probably watching them, alone, trying to steal food from my campsite when i was outback sometime.., there's no dingos in Tasmania or Victoria which are the only states I've lived in, so how the hell should I know.

I think it would be interesting to try kangaroo meat as well as koala. I don't know why... but yeah.
I voted for kangaroo though.
As far as Americans eating eagles, I think it's against the law (as well as hunting them... but I'm not exactly sure about that either). I think they just recently came off the endangered species list or something.

Not like anyone was really all that curious, but I looked it up. The bald eagle was actually just recently removed (http://www.daily-journal.com/archives/dj/display.php?id=403876) from the endangered species list.
Score one for me. Awesome.

kangaroo's pretty nice, i haven't had it in years tho. never tried any of the others, mainly coz i didn't know you could get them.
Turd, the only natural predators that kangaroos have are things like things like snakes, scorpions, spiders, pretty much anything begining with an s. crocodile's prolly fuck them up too
as for dingo's, they're just wild dogs really, fairly harmless. they use to be all over this place called Fraser Island, like they'd be running throughout the resorts and shit. but a couple of years one attacked a kid (who was prolly annoying the shit out of it) and they all got culled from the island.
and btw, kangaroo is fairly rare to buy at supermarkets and what not. i've rarely seen in and if it is on sale, there's only half a kg there compared to 25 tons of other meats
Oooooh, hellojello's real name starts with S!

Australia has lots of introduced species that are fucking up everything destroying native species and so on -
rabbit, fox, goat, pig (huuuuuuuuge fucking ones), camel, lets not forget the cane toad...
I've eaten every one of those except camel and toad.
None of those could really challenge a roo except maybe a wild boar... they are tough nuts to crack. last time i went boar hunting I emptied a 10 round magazine from my M1 carbine into its head as it was charging me and it still kept running, it was only my stepdad with his shotty that finally stopped it just in time before it fucked. me. up.
Kangaroo meat is easy to get here, and the real fancy shmancy restaurants always have a kangaroo dish. its delicious. Darker and more gamey than beef, more flavour tho.
Crocodile is the best tho. MMMMMMM.

My parents live in the country. When I first moved there I'd nick off down the valley in the neighbouring property and all you'd see is kangaroos.
When you see scores of them like that, it puts the need for a cull into perspective. I'm a vegetarian but during the summer their suffering is pitiful, and you can't help but be ok with something that ends their hunger.
Occasionally they'll get caught in a fence and we'll have to shoot it. They break a leg or something and they're fucked, you can't leave them like that.
