So, it's a gorgeous day in the Chi, I have the day off and the Beastie Boys are somewhere in town! Sigh.
Just wanted to shout out to a great crowd & a great night. I'm suprised to say this given how much I looooved the NYC show and take fierce pride in my hometown but the Riv show topped the Hammerstein show for me. The vibe was amazing and the band's energy was so high. Lack of long delay kept the crowd more mellow and sober, and MMM's presence . . . well enough said. Plus it was a good move for them to really plug the dress code. I think it brings people together. I agree with a girl in line who called it "grown-up prom." And shouts to the robot! So happy he didn't get booted.
I also loved how the whole "requesting the wrong kind of song" thing wasn't an agressive battle like it was in NYC -- no idiots shouted brass monkey again & again. My favorite Adrock response to a request was "I thought you were telling me to like 'get it together' and I was like, I know, I'm working on it..."
Then again -- my favorite response to a request was Mike D just going ahead and starting High Plains Drifter!!! Unreal. I never thought I'd live to see "pulled a bullet outta my chest" coming out of Adrock's mouth.
Now help me out because I feel like an old lady. Any time Yauch said something to the crowd I was like "what did he say?!" Was that his dad there in the balcony, is that what he said? Or was he just pointing out how that man looked like his brother? It was an awesome moment either way, because that man was so happy.
The show had some amazing flow. My favorite section was this: The seamless transition from Pow into Lighten Up, where Fredo nailed that funny instrument solo. Then right away Mike D stepped forward with his intense spoken word intro to Tough Guy, rocked the shit out of that, and then just when you thought there was room for air . . . fuzz bass . . . Gratitude!!! Sick.
I think on a gut level Shambala was my favorite song of the evening. True jazz piece. Yauch was on fire.
On a girly note, I was thrilled to have several moments to finally scrutinize the World Trade Center tattoo before 3 MC's and 1 DJ. Now I know.
Finally I just want to say how amazing the Frank Catalano Sextet was at the Green Mill. Holy crap. I know, I know -- at first I thought I couldn't bear to hear any live music after the magic of the show. But this band soon won us over with their relentless energy. I saw a lot of gala event people there afterwards. Aside from being wrestled to the floor by a drunken fan in a beastie boys shirt who attemped to dip me by pushing me over and falling on top of me (anyone catch that?) the Green Mill was the perfect topper to the evening. And it got me thinking . . . club tour next, Boys. Club tour . . .
