they are nominated for next years induction. can't believe i read it on rollingstone.com and didn't see it here first. can't wait to see them perform. you know they will break out with some raps for that show. wondering who would be a good person to give the speech to honor them. i'm thinking somebody intelligent and articulate...maybe beck..he would be good or maybe ben stiller, or jack black, or thurston moore...any ideas?

A nomination doesn't mean that they are in. Only 5 of the 9 will get voted in.

Lets see...

Madonna
Beastie Boys
Leonard Cohen
Afrika Bambaataa
Donna Summer
The Ventures
The Dave Clark Five
John Mellencamp
Chic

Competitions not too stiff, they should be a shoo-in. I'd say; bboys, madge, the ventures, mellencamp or maybe cohen or bambaataa are likely.

Looks like I will get another opportunity to wear my Gala Event Suit after all.

On second thought, this may call for the fly blue rental.

I've always thought they should be inducted twice. One for obvious reasons.

and two for their post CYH instrumental music.

Theres clapton for cream and solo, (not sure about for derek & the dominos) and then there is mcartney for beatles and solo, also wacko jacko for jackson five and solo...

hmm, anyone else?

Edit: got some more info (from some random blog), turn out clapton's actually in three times!; "eric clapton has been inducted three times : with cream, with the yardbirds, and as a solo artist. neil young would have tied him if they inducted crosby, still, nash, and young, but for some reason, they only inducted csn — young has been inducted as a solo artist and as part of buffalo springfield. while we’re on csn, stephen stills is the only person to be inducted twice in the same year, with csn and buffalo springfield. and graham nash must be pissed, as he’s the only guy who’s earlier band (the hollies) has been ignored — david crosby got in a second time through the byrds."

I'm pleasantly surprised by this! I didn't think they'd count Polly Wog Stew as their first album, but its fine by me!(y)(y)(y)(y)

This is awesome. I can't wait to hear what whoever makes the speech has to say about them. Leonard Cohen will probably be the fourth sure thing. He seems fairly beloved. The rest I don't really know much about. I'm disappointed Sonic Youth wasn't nominated as well this year. Their first album came out in 82.

I hope the event is dominated by Madonna.

And when I say that I mean it's not the fact that she has a large gay-male fan following and I'll be surrounded by extremely effeminate men when I go to this, but I don't want the Beasties having to play second fiddle to anyone. I'm still holding a grudge about the Hip-Hop Honors thing and the fact that they were the opener for people like MC Lyte and Bambaata. No disrespect to any of them, but the Beasties are far more influencial in the history of Hip-Hop and deserved more.

Does anyone recall hearing an interview where they are asked how they would feel if ever inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? They basically said they wouldn't mind so long as if it didn't inconvenience them, like if it was in NYC, that would be OK.... I wonder if I'm making this up?!

Hey they did the vh1 hip hop honers thing so why wouldn't they accept an induction into the rock and roll hall of fame?

They didn't make it.

Oh well. The Hall of Fame is, like, one notch above the Grammies and child molesters.

From CNN: (http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Music/12/13/rockhall.inductees.ap/index.html)

Madonna was announced as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on Thursday along with John Mellencamp, The Ventures,
Leonard Cohen and The Dave Clark Five.

Wow. The Ventures and DC5 before the Beasties. That's fucking weird.

Wow I'm a little shocked, but I'm somewhat not surprised. I honestly think that they did this so the Beastie Boys didn't make it before Run-DMC. If you think about it, the Beastie Boys not making the HOF right now wouldn't cause anybody in the hip-hop community to even pay attention. In fact only Beastie Boys fans(like myself) would be upset. But, I can imagine that them being put in before Run-DMC would cause the majority of the hip-hop community and media to be a little upset about it.

I still think the Hall of fame is still a joke because its all about who Jann Wenner feels should get in just like who he feels should be on the cover of Rolling Stone,

Man, Bambaataa, along with a few other cats, basically birthed hip hop. I can't believe you even said that. Ask any rap artist (including the Beasites) who was more influential in hip hop and they will tell you Bambaata hands down. There were no hip hop "hits" when Bambaata was making his mark. He created the Zulu Nation which helped organize the whole hip hop scene in NYC (before the rest of the world even knew about it), he brought a ton of breaks into the scene (many of which the Beasties used on their albums) which helped shape what hip hop sounds like today, he was one of the main ones who brought graffiti writers and b-boys into the hip hop fold, he was instrumental in bringing hip hop to white people in New York (which is how the Beasties got involved in rap in the first place), he was the first one to bring a hip hop tour to Europe, etc. etc. etc. The Beasties would probably be a defunct punk group were it not for Bambaataa.

They usually do I believe. I think its something like a bunch of bands get nominated and then they get whittled down to like the 'top 10' or whatever and then 600 people vote on top 5. A lot of bands take a number of times to get in.

Next year RUN DMC should get nominated and could have a shot of getting in there. I would not be surprised if the beasties did not get in till 2011 since it was 25 years past their 'main stream' success of LTI. Chances of them bring in 2 hip hop bands in the same year is slim.

The hall of fame is quasi bs anyways but its good they have started looking at rap and metal over the years.

Rock N Roll hall of fame was never designated to be a strictly "rock n roll" hall of fame. The Temptations, Jackson 5, Michael Jackson and a ton of artists cut from the Motown cloth are in there, and their about as far from rock as Run DMC and the Beasties are. Actually, considering some of the early Def Jam releases, probably moreso.

So, Madonna getting in should surprise no one at all. It should be called the Pop Music hall of fame.
