you dont really ever use "~ =" because the ~ already denotes something is "approximately equal to"
you are being redundant my friend.

The preceding was a message from the Department of Redundancy Department.

no, its means "repeating" only if its written right on top of the 9's
and if I recall its usually a straight line, not a swirl. but my calculus was a long time ago back in 1st/2nd year.

Yeah, a straight line over the numbers means "repeating."
Yeah well my keyboard cant do that!

....but .9999999999999repeating wouldn't equal 1 no matter how it tried.

well then the easiest way to express it is to write "0.999...=1"
it's universally accepted.

So what does 1 minus 0.999... equal, then?

I think we can all agree that 1 is the loneliest number that you'll ever do.

Don't try and get your head around it or anything, though. You're no mathematican!

Well put it this way: 1/3 = 0.3333 recurring... therefore 3 x 0.333... = 0.999...?
But (1/3) x 3 = 1
So?

It's kind of like Leap Year.
I think people find it so difficult to accept because they see it as having a physical significance, like the half life of a radioactive isotope or something - in which case the radiological activity (or whatever, it's been a while since i did this) just keeps halving, so it will never be zero, but it will get to the point where whatever remains is basically physically insignificant. However, with 0.999 recurring it goes on to infinity, which isn't a 'physical' concept, if you see what i mean.
That sounded far too philosophical for my liking.

is this thread supposed to be interesting or something?
A conversation that I had with my son when he was two years old...
Me: OK Noah, let's do some math.
Noah: OK.
Me: All right then. In my hand I have two cars. If I take one away, how many cars to I have?
Noah: Two.
Me: No, I only have one, I took one car away.
Noah: No, it's right there, 1 + 1 = 2, right Daddy?
Me: Yes it does, that very good, but I took one away...
Noah: But it is not away, it's right there.
Me: OK, fine then...*puts car behind back* Now I have only one car...
Noah: No, you have two. The other one is behind you...
Me: =/ So that's enough math, do you want to learn the words to "Paul Revere"?
Noah: OK.
i demand to see a proof for this maddening assumption
